Is Winnipeg Really the Most Racist City in Canada?
Josh Sigurdson and
John Doull of
Winnipeg Alternative Media hit the streets to ask the people of Winnipeg "Do you believe Winnipeg's the most racist city in
Canada?
Yes, no and why?"
Maclean's Magazine recently published an article claiming Winnipeg is the most racist city in
Canada. The article was met with anger from all sides of the spectrum as well as with a lot of support from individual Winnipeggers. The reception was so mixed that we at
WAM decided to hit the streets and ask the people of Winnipeg what they thought.
Now of course, one can't really go anywhere in Winnipeg without hearing something negative said about aboriginal people. Most Winnipeggers are used to it and let it go in one ear and out the other. With incredible oppression directed at aboriginal people in Winnipeg going up to the 90's and then the remnants of racism in the minds of vast amounts of people reaching up to this day, there's no wonder why many first nation people in Winnipeg are fed up. Their traditions stifled, their tax free society gone to the wind. The
British society has taken over in Canada, and of course this isn't new news.
All of that said, there's no doubt that even as a white man, there CAN be some discrimination. When Josh Sigurdson was 13, he was beaten half to death for being white and walking around the wrong neighborhood (apparently). WAM hosted an anti-war in
Syria protest in 2013 which was met by several aboriginal men screaming at us for not protesting for their people at that moment and saying "screw the kids in Syria! You white people, all of you are murderers!". Now one cannot deny the disgusting genocide committed against the aboriginal people throughout hundreds of years. Some of the stories of violence are enough to make anyone sick. Claiming all white people are murderers because of what certain ancestors did over
100 years ago is wrong.
That's where collectivism meets collectivism.
The whole
point is that we are the human race. One race.
Besides traditions, we are just people.
It's been said a million times before and it's a shame it still needs to be said. Technically, the question itself "Is Winnipeg the most racist city in Canada?" is collectivist. We're saying "Winnipeg" as if it means everyone who lives in Winnipeg as a whole. We cannot paint Winnipeg collectively as racist.
There are so many great people in Winnipeg who have no racial ignorance.
As a 100% first nation friend of WAM told us, when he lived in Winnipeg he felt included, part of the vast crowd, one of the people. Now that he lives in
British Columbia he says everyone stares at him as if he's an alien. He doesn't feel at
home in BC like he does in Winnipeg. What an incredible sentiment.
Of course there's blanket discrimination against black men and women and most of all, as of recently, those of middle eastern dissent.
Let's remember how incredibly dumb it is to collectivize and entire race. You don't see a bad driver and say "All drivers are bad at driving." You shouldn't see a black man rob a store and think "all black men rob stores". You shouldn't see an aboriginal man drunk on the streets and think "All aboriginal men are like this." You shouldn't see a middle eastern man blow himself up and think "All middle eastern men blow themselves up." You shouldn't see an
Asian woman driving badly and say "No
Asian women can drive." and you shouldn't see a white man acting like a racist fool and think "All white people are racist."
All of the above are real stereotypes and I'm not afraid to use them in context here.
Let us stop collectivizing from ALL sides and learn to live together and stand together. If we can't stand together we'll die together.
This is the prairie truth. We hope you enjoy the video!
