Synopsis: In the high-stakes pursuit of big-wall climbing, the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru may be the ultimate prize. Sitting 21,000 feet above the sacred Ganges River in Northern India, the mountain’s perversely stacked obstacles make it both a nightmare and an irresistible calling for some of the world’s toughest climbers. In October 2008, renowned alpinists Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk arrived in India to tackle Meru. Their planned seven-day trip quickly declined into a 20-day odyssey in sub-zero temperatures with quickly depleting food rations. Despite making it to within 100 meters of the elusive summit, their journey, like everyone before them, was not a successful one.

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi is an award-winning film director and producer with Hungarian, Chinese, and Brazilian roots. Her first film A Normal Life, about young Kosovars who came of age during the recent war, won Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2003. Her second film, Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love, chronicles Senegalese icon Youssou N’Dour and his Grammy-award winning album Egypt, was released in theaters in the US and internationally. Vasarhelyi is a graduate of The Brearley School and Princeton University where she majored in Comparative Literature. In 2005, she was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” In 2008, she received an Achievement Award from the Creative Visions Foundation.
Jimmy Chin is one of the most sought after and recognized adventure sports photographers and filmmakers working today. In the past decade, Jimmy has collaborated with some of the most progressive athletes and explorers in the world, participating in and documenting break through expeditions around the planet, from climbing notable first ascents in the Karakoram, to skiing first descents in the Himalayas.

The Egyptians wrote of the “Mound of the First Time” which was the first land to appear from the Waters and is the dwelling place of the High God, the source of light. The Muslims write of Qaf and Zoroastrians of Sogdiana wrote of Girnagar the world encircling mountains. The Navajos spoke of “encircled mountain” which was surrounded by four directional mountains. The Dogon tribe of Nigeria spoke of a cosmic pillar spanning 14 worlds which is the “roof-post of the house of the high god Amma.” The ancient Greek mythology tells of Mount Olympus the Home of the gods. The ancient German told of “Irminsul” a universal column which sustains everything. The Norse Edda spoke of Asgard, the burgh of the gods rising in the center of Midgard, the circular earth. The 14th century writings Inventio Fortunata by Nicholas de Linna and The Itinerium of Jacobus Cnoyen mention the magnetic mountain being so powerful that it pulled the nails right out of explorer’s boats! The encircling whirlpool and four directional rivers surrounding the mountain were said to change every 6 hours causing the tides, comparing them to the “breath of God” at the “naval of the Earth,” inhaling and exhaling the great seas. Even Gerhard Mercator, of the Mercator projection map we still use today, back in 1569 made a detailed map of the North Pole showing an Iron Mountain at the middle called “Mount Rupes Nigra” at the North Pole with four rivers extending outwards at right angles. Jimmie Chinn was an actor, teacher and most notably, a playwright.
Jimmie was born in Middleton, Lancashire on March 30th 1940, the only son of his beloved mother, Edie. His early years in Oldham and Manchester were to shape his writing in future years. He came to London in 1959 where he trained as an actor at the RADA and worked in many aspects of the theatre. His short and very undistinguished career as an actor led him eventually to train as a teacher at Whitelands College, Putney, where he gained an honours degree in English and Drama. He taught and became a senior teacher and housemaster at Dormers Wells School in Middlesex until becoming a full-time writer in 1984. Jimmie became increasingly loved and admired not only in the professional theatre , but also in amateur theatre circles as a fine and talented actor, director, teacher, mentor and advisor.

Most of his work for the theatre was premiered by Teddington Theatre Club at Hampton Court Theatre or on the fringe circuit.

Nine women tested positive for breast cancer out of the 2,626 screened. 307 men were screened for prostate cancer, with 76 suspicious cases. A total of five other cases detected were lip, throat, tongue and stomach cancers. -

Businesses closed in Meru town over KEBS crackdown

The traders operating hardware, mobile phone accessories, electronics and boutique business closed shop leaving customers stranded. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry leaders in Meru County held a meeting with the KEBS officers and the County Commissioner over the crackdown. Business owners mostly from the Asian community camped at the county commissioner's office awaiting a response from the meeting. -

About 2,503 women who have been screened for cervical cancer in Igembe South, 29 cases were referred to the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital. Nine women tested positive for breast cancer out of the 2,626 screened. 307 men were screened for prostate cancer, with 76 suspicious cases. A total of five other cases detected were lip, throat, tongue and stomach cancers.

Business in Meru was yesterday paralysed after most shops were closed following a crackdown by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officers.
The traders operating hardware, mobile phone accessories, electronics and boutique business closed shop leaving customers stranded.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry leaders in Meru County held a meeting with the KEBS officers and the County Commissioner over the crackdown.
Business owners mostly from the Asian community camped at the county commissioner's office awaiting a response from the meeting.

Ms Emily Mwendwa, commonly known as ‘Kaman’ is arguably Meru town’s only female mechanic who has withstood discouragement from people who view it as a man’s job.
Few know Ms Mwendwa by her real names owing to the nickname ‘Kaman’ she earned 16 years ago for venturing into what is seen as a preserve of men.
Ms Mwendwa said she had to overcome opposition from her parents and relatives as well as harassment from male counterparts when she started working at Meru Central Cooperative service station in 2000.
Occasionally, she says she had to beat up men who tried to bully her at work.
She says her passion for the job started as a child when she would join boys in making hand carts before she started joining her uncle at his garage in Embu town.
Ms Mwendwa says she was the only female student pursuing motor vehicle mechanic grade three course at Nkubu youth polytechnic. She was also the only female candidate who sat for grade two exam as a private candidate in 2013.
The Service lady says most female mechanics who found her in the job left as they could not stand the challenges.
She has earned trust from several customers including companies in Meru town. Ms Mwendwa says she services all Lorries that transport Miraa from Meru to Mombasa.
