Filipino Catholics have a unique way of commemorating the
Holy Week not really because, as one of the most profound events in the yearly calendar of the entire Christendom, it happens to fall within the country's summer vacation.
School children are already on their summer break, parents as well as workers and professionals are usually afforded a good number of days off the rigors of work and the entire national and local communities are in full support of what is traditionally regarded as an excellent opportunity for Filipino Christians to pursue God-centered and healthy family-oriented activities.
In this
Fun MTV set to the tune of the Stylistics,
Gary Valenciano and
Shakatak, a host of
Bicolanos, both young and the not so young, take time out from their usual schedules from the country's capital,
Manila to hie off for some meaningful days in their home province of
Albay and pay homage to our folks that we truly adore. This collection of photos will probably make our fellow Albayanos smile, as the snapshots feature familiar sites and fun and profound activities one can certainly have and enjoy while enroute to and once in
Legazpi, Albay's capital, and the neighboring places: negotiating the "
South Road" with a convoy with family and friends; visiting
Camsur, one of the top tourist spots in the country; drinking fresh buko juice, mountain trecking and fun fishing in well-kept family farms and fishponds in the area; embarking on a
Visita Iglesia and appreciating
Spanish era churches and recently built municipal parish churches; watching local versions of the
Seven Last Words; participating in one of the region's oldest, distinguished and longest
Good Friday processions; malling and trying out the adventure rides at the flourishing Embarkadero; chilling out with "kababata", batch mates and relatives along beaches and seaside restaurants; relishing spicy Bicol dishes and superb cuisine at the
Small Talk Cafe and many great restos; and of course, endlessly gazing and marveling at the world's most perfect cone- the
Mayon Volcano, no doubt still
Bicolandia's pride.
But while it is true that
Legazpi and the rest of Albay, or the entire Bicolandia for that matter, have also a thousand and one tourist attractions like many well endowed localities in the
Philippines, it is really the warmth of true friends, the loving company of family and close acquaintances, and the general welcoming feel of the well natured and
God-fearing Bicolanos, that make Legazpi-Albay one of the best places to visit, in a fun and profound way. All year round. Especially during the Holy Week and the summer months.
