What inspired me?
When I first moved to Shanghai, I stumbled upon an old residential alleyway and saw bamboo sticks poking out of windows with laundry hanging onto them, waving in the air.
To me, that was incredibly beautiful. And the amazing thing is seeing something so traditional in a modern, fast-paced city like Shanghai. When I told locals how I was fascinated by these, they said, 'You crazy! This is so ugly!' Haha.
Zhang Yimou is a famous Chinese film director, who directed the movies Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern, and also was the art director for the Beijing Olympics. Many of his movies reflect the beauty of the Chinese culture, through the use of bamboos and traditional costumes. I thought Zhang Yimou's portrait done in a Shanghainese laneway, with bamboo and laundry would be perfect for this project.
I ended up using 750 pairs of socks because shirts were too big and expensive, plus I found an interesting way to pin the socks together, creating a diamond-shaped piece of skin. It was interesting to see the different angles of shadows casted on it throughout the day.
Also, notice the quirks of the local Chinese living in that area! Many of them were really curious and came to help. What started off as a personal piece became a community project! It was amazing seeing how they were excited to see this piece come into completion...and this was also how I got to know my neighbours in Shanghai! :)

[Vietsub] How I Live Now (2013) - Saoirse Ronan - Last Scene
'How I live now', an occidental reminder of the oriental 'The flowers of war'
The film is the story about a teenaged girl, Daisy, or Elizabeth struggling to come back to her cousins' house which is the meeting place of her boyfriend, Eddie and her too. By the way, Eddie is Daisy's cousin (I wonder if it is considered an incestuous relationship). Daisy's fellow-traveller is another cousin, Piper.

After watching its trailer on youtube, to tell the truth, I was slightly disappointed, a thought instantaneously came to my mind: "Errr, I will probably try my hand at watching it just because of Saoirse Ronan". Previously, she was also the reason that I deliberately downloaded the film disregarding the IMDB rating. It, however, turns out to be better than I thought.
In spite of the peaceful initial half of the cinematographic artistic work the other part still brings about thriller, drama and war atmosphere. Let us put the unjust factor of hostilities aside. As far as I have watched. the film has been relatively successful in conveying director's intentions to the audience. Thematic colours are green and yellow in the first part meanwhile that in the other one is gray, the typical colour of war films. At this point, it reminds me of 'The flowers of war' sharing the same war genre with 'How I live now'. Zhang Yimou does also make use of the colouristic contrary effects in his film.

Renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou is being investigated for allegedly having seven children. The Chinese regime has a strict one-child policy, but sometimes, those with power and money can skirt the rules.
Zhang is known for directing the opening ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. On Thursday, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that family planning authorities are now looking into reports that he fathered seven kids, to four different women.
[Gu Zhijian, Democracy Activist]
"The law in China is implemented according to the person in question. People like Zhang Yimou aren't restricted. For ordinary people, even after they get married they need to have a birth permit to have children, if not, they'll be forced to abort."
Zhang is currently in his second marriage, with actress Chen Ting. If he is found to have broken family planning rules, he faces more than $25 million in fines, according to state-run People's Daily.
Zhang Yimou gained fame earlier in his career for movies like "To Live". That film was banned by Chinese authorities because it looked at the disastrous effects of the Cultural Revolution.
More recently though, Zhang's critics say he has become more aligned with the ruling Communist Party. The New York Times describes his transformation as, quote, "a director with an uncompromising vision, to one who bows to the whims of party officials."

Over the course of his career, Zhang Yimou has focused on the way in which the cultural - in particular as opposed to the political - works or does not work to form a dynamic and coherent narrative of community in time and space. His position on the viability of culture evolved with domestic and global changes, while remaining a core concern. This talk will address Zhang’s emphasis on the cultural and discuss how it structures several films, including Red Sorghum (1987), The Story of Qiuju (1992), Keep Cool (1997) and Hero (2002).
Wendy Larson is Professor of East Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Oregon. Her research monographs include From Ah Q to Lei Feng: Freud and Revolutionary Spirit in 20th Century China (Stanford UP, 2010); Women and Writing in Modern China (Stanford UP, 1998); and Literary Authority and the Chinese Writer: Ambivalence and Autobiography (Duke UP, 1991). She is working on a book tentatively entitled “Zhang Yimou: Globalization and the Subject of Culture,” as well as a project on comparative optimism under socialism and capitalism.

As someone whose life was upended by the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese director Zhang Yimou, 60, has every reason to be wary of politics. His new film, "The Flowers of War," is China's submission for the Academy Award for best foreign-language film and has already picked up a Golden Globe nomination. It deals with one of the most horrific episodes in modern Chinese history: the Nanjing Massacre of December 1937.
"The Flowers of War," which stars Christian Bale as an American drifter, was itself thrust into a political controversy after Bale, in China for the film's premiere, was roughed up by plainclothes security officials when he tried to visit a human rights activist.
Initial reviews of the film have been mostly negative, but last month, before the controversy, Zhang was in the United States to talk about the movie. He discussed the challenges and process of writing and filming in China with a multinational and multilingual cast. Here are edited excerpts:
Q. The Nanjing Massacre has been the subject of numerous books, feature films and documentaries, and is widely taught in Chinese schools. What made you want to address it again?
A. I have seen so many television programs and documentary films about the Nanjing massacre, and every single project is so depressing. It's all been very similar to me, so as a director that's a challenge. I became interested: how would you make a movie a different way, under a different light?
Q. The closing credits of the film make clear that you obtained official cooperation in the making of "The Flowers of War." Was that difficult, given the fact that so many of your characters are outsiders-- prostitutes, Catholic convent girls, Westerners-- and your treatment of the subject diverges from the Communist Party's line?
A. Actually, because all of the locations are owned by the government, you have to have their approval in order to have access. So any Chinese movie will have this kind of support from the government. It is necessary, and there are regulations. The most difficult part is after the movie is made, when you have to get the approval of the government, through censorship. That is more difficult, but it's a procedure you just have to go through. The Chinese government is changing, it's actually less and less strict. But still, it's at a very slow pace and in the end, I had to make some adjustments in terms of editing for this film to get it approved.
Q. With many film directors, it takes two or even three years to make a movie. But you make a movie almost every year. How do you manage to be so productive?
A. This is based on my lifestyle. First of all, I love to make movies. I don't love doing anything else; on a personal level, I don't have any hobbies or distractions of my own. So I devote 100 percent of my time to filmmaking.
Q. What are your personal experiences of the Cultural Revolution?
A. I was really just a farmer, like everyone else, feeding the livestock, tilling the land, plowing the fields. It was a very difficult time. All I can remember is that I never felt I had a full stomach. I was always hungry.
Q. Are the Oscars important to Chinese audiences and filmmakers?
A. For the ordinary folk in China, this is the biggest award, and so the expectation is there. They really want the movie to win. But for me, it's already a big deal that it could even go into the Oscar as a selected film and potentially be nominated.

wn.com/The Flowers Of War Theme Song, Highlights Zhang Yimou's Interview

Chinese director Zhang Yimou and his wife, Chen Ting, admitted breaching the country's population control policy in an interview with the state news agency on Sunday. He and his wife gave birth to two sons and a girl respectively in 2001, 2004, and 2006, before their marriage in 2011. Zhang, however, denied rumors about celebrities like him dodging the penalty. He reiterated that he has never been granted any privilege by the family planning authority, and would cooperate with the bureau's investigation. Zhang faces a fine of $1.2 Million, the highest ever reported for such a case in China.

Christopher Doyle discusses his cinematography philosophies and life lessons. This is an excerpt, watch the full interview at http://www.theseventhart.org/main/videos/issue-14-christopher-doyle/
Christopher Doyle is one of the world's most recognizable cinematographers, whose work in Hong Kong with directors such as Edward Yang, Patrick Tam, Stanley Kwan and especially Wong Kar-wai gave him international renown. He has since worked extensively in Chinese cinema, including Peter Chan, Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou, while also working with Western directors Gus Van Sant, Jim Jarmusch, M. Night Shyamalan, Phillip Noyce and more.
Christopher was in Toronto for TIFF's A Century of Chinese Cinema program, which included his installation, Away With Words. It was our pleasure to invite him to Sex Laser for a few rounds of drinks and talk about life lessons, art philosophy, and deliberately misleading his mother about the start-time of a Happy Together screening.
