The Guozijian (simplified Chinese: 国子监; traditional Chinese: 國子監; pinyin: guózǐjiàn), or Kuo Tzu Chien, the School of the Sons of State, sometimes translated as the National School, National Academy, Imperial Academy, Imperial University, Imperial College, Imperial Central School, etc., was the national central institution of higher learnings in Chinese dynasties after the Sui. It was the highest institution of learning in China's traditional educational system. In Vietnam, the Imperial Academy (Quốc Tử Giám) existed after the Lý dynasty.
Formerly it was called the Taixue, while Taixue for Gongsheng (tribute students) from the populace was still part of Guozijian, along with Guozixue for noble students. The central school Taixue were established as far back as 3 CE, when a standard nationwide school system was established and funded during the reign of Emperor Ping of Han. The Guozijian was disbanded in 1905 during Beijing reforms in late Qing Dynasty.
However, the Imperial Capital University was established during the 1898 reform of the Qing Dynasty, which later renamed Peking University, and was regarded as the replacement of the Guozijian in Peking. Meanwhile, Nanking University, formerly known as National Central University, was regarded as the successor of former Guozijian in Nanking. During R.O.C in mainland China, Beiyong (北雍) and Nanyong (南雍), the alternative name of two Guozijian in Beijing and Nanjing respectively during Ming Dynasty, were also used respectively as another name (elegant name) of the two universities by scholars.

US Vice President Joe Biden took some time out to go souvenir shopping and drink tea in Beijing on Thursday, as he wrapped up his visit to China before heading to Seoul, the South Korean capital.
After meeting with his granddaughter Finnegan and the family of outgoing US Ambassador in China Gary Locke, Biden walked down the traditional street of Guozijian, in Beijing's Dongcheng district.
The name of the street translated into English is "Imperial College street", because it the examination hall for citizens trying to become public servants for the Emperor used to be nearby.
Biden briefly toured the area of low-traditional houses or "hutongs" and went into a book shop selling religious scripts, souvenirs and incense.
The area is near two prominent religious sites, the Temple of Confucius and the Lama Temple, dedicated to Tibetan buddhism.
The Vice President also attended a brief tea ceremony hosted by tea house owner Tuo Tuo, who explained to her visitors the properties of the tea leaves that were being served.
