The end of the Cold War has brought more than an easing of tensions between China and Taiwan - it is allowing Taipei to replace minefields on the fortress island of Quemoy.
Later this month specialists will start clearing selected mine dumps and minefields on the island that were laid beginning in the 1950s to repel an invasion from China.
On Friday, former Nepalese Gurkha soldiers demonstrated techniques they will use to clear the mines on Quemoy Island - also known as King Men Island.
Quemoy lies less than three kilometres (1.8 miles) from the Chinese coast.
But the old strategy of repelling an invasion force on land has been altered to preventing such a force from ever establishing a beachhead.
In all, thousands of mines will be cleared - it's thought the first dump will be cleared by June.
The demining operation may be a friendly gesture towards China at a time when both sides are looking for ways to revive negotiations on technical issues that could lead to an eventual peace treaty.
However, Quemoy will remain heavily fortified.
An estimated 40-thousand troops will remain garrisoned on the island, which is pockmarked with dugouts and bunkers.
And many beaches will remain mined, though Taiwan would not release figures on the number of mines buried.
Army officials said the mines that would be removed were very old and of no use now.

"Because these landmines have no value anymore they should be dumped elsewhere. There is no need for these landmines to be sitting here anymore. It might affect people's live and security."

"They (landmines) are older than the usual landmines you would find in Cambodia, Mozambique and Angola. But that does not mean to say they are ineffective. Landmines are designed to stay in the ground for a longtime. In addition, they may become a bit more sensitive due to number of reasons like chemical reaction within the ground."

Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists held onto Quemoy when they were swept out of mainland China by Mao Tse-tung's Communists in 1949.
Chinese troops tried to conquer the island in a hotly contested 1950 battle.
In 1958, Quemoy and the Matsu islands further north became famous internationally as shells rained down at the start of two decades of intermittent bombardment.
But as China replaced military confrontation with detente in the late 1980s, democratic change in Taiwan gradually extended to Quemoy and Matsu.
Direct administration by the military ended in 1992, along with draconian travel and residency restrictions.
Since then, the island has struggled to welcome a flood of tourists drawn by the island's traditional architecture, clean skies and military history.
Clearing the mines will open up new areas for development, to feed this tourism boom..

It is a hazardous task for ships trying to beat the Communist blockade of Quemoy. But it is a vital task if the Nationalist garrison is to hold out. Supplies are reported to be very short. Batteries have almost sealed off the island from help. When supplies DO arrive it is often with this result: a direct hit on a supply ship at the end of a long voyage.

Taiwan's first fully free presidential elections take place in under a month.
China has said it will react with force towards any move to independence. Already some 150,000 troops are on China's coast for military exercises.
A possible target is the island of Quemoy - just 2 kilometres from China. Taiwan's only pro-independence party, the DPP has been campaigning there Friday and Saturday.
At first sight Quemoy is a peaceful island. But lying just two kilometres from China it is at the forefront of Taiwan's defences.
Democratic Progressive Party vice-presidential candidate Frank Hsieh toured the island this weekend, in search of locals ready for to vote for open independence from Mainland China.
The DPP platform is the only one to advocate independence and the subject is a sensitive one.
With less than a month to go before Taiwan's first fully free presidential elections - already some 150,000 troops are gathered on China's coastline for military exercises.
China regards Taiwan as a renegade province that should be retaken by force if necessary and the exercises are seen as an attempt to influence Taiwan's voters.
Quemoy still bears the scars of earlier conflicts, this building stands as a memorial to the dead. China has launched three attacks against the island.
In 1949, Chinese troops were repelled and in 1954 and 1958 the island was heavily shelled.
The bombardment lasted for over forty days, resulting in some 600 deaths. Older islanders have become immune to the constant tension.
SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): " They bombarded us for around 42 to 43 days during the August 23rd battles, after all that, we are less afraid. When the battles happened back in those years, we were all afraid but now we are used to hearing the sound of gunfire and bombs. SUPERCAPTION: Chin Chun, 74 years old retired farmer.
The island is a fortress, with some 30,000 soldiers to a civilian population of around 50,000. Anti parachutist poles and fortified defences are everywhere.
Many locals want nothing to do with the DPP's call for independence. They are afraid of the result - not just Chinese sabre-rattling but all out war.

Many islanders do not publicly fear a war, but privately many are afraid that, given the current state of tension across the Taiwan straits, they will be the first to suffer if the political skirmishing goes to far.

Kinmen or Quemoy (/kɪˈmɔɪ/; see also "Names" section below) is a small archipelago of several islands administered by the Republic of China (Taiwan): Greater Kinmen, Lesser Kinmen, and some islets. Administratively, it is Kinmen County of Fujian Province, ROC. The county is claimed by the People's Republic of China (PRC) as part of its own Fujian Province's Quanzhou Prefecture. It is geographically very near Xiamen, no more than 2 kilometers. Some islands of other counties, such as Wuchiu, were transferred to the jurisdiction of Kinmen County by the ROC government following its civil war defeat and retreat to Taiwan. Matsu is the other set of islands on the Fujian coast controlled by the Republic of China.
Kinmen was first named Jīnmén (金門; lit, "golden gate") in Chinese 1387 when the Hongwu Emperor of China's Ming Dynasty appointed a military officer to administer the island and protect it from wokou (pirate) attacks. The name, pronounced Jīnmén in the official Mandarin Chinese and Kim-mûi in the native Zhangzhou dialect of Hokkien Minnan. The various names used in English for the islands derive from these name.

Mandarin/Nat Taiwan's first fully free presidential elections take place in under a month. China has said it will react with force towards any move to independence. Already some 150,000 troops are on China's coast for military exercises. A possible target is the island of Quemoy - just 2 kilometres from China. Taiwan's only pro-independence party, the DPP has been campaigning there Friday and Saturday. At first sight Quemoy is a peaceful island. But lying just two kilometres from China it is at the forefront of Taiwan's defences. Democratic Progressive Party vice-presidential candidate Frank Hsieh toured the island this weekend, in search of locals ready for to vote for open independence from Mainland China. The DPP platform is the only one to advocate independence and the subject is a sensitive one. With less than a month to go before Taiwan's first fully free presidential elections - already some 150,000 troops are gathered on China's coastline for military exercises. China regards Taiwan as a renegade province that should be retaken by force if necessary and the exercises are seen as an attempt to influence Taiwan's voters. Quemoy still bears the scars of earlier conflicts, this building stands as a memorial to the dead. China has launched three attacks against the island. In 1949, Chinese troops were repelled and in 1954 and 1958 the island was heavily shelled. The bombardment lasted for over forty days, resulting in some 600 deaths. Older islanders have become immune to the constant tension. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): " They bombarded us for around 42 to 43 days during the August 23rd battles, after all that, we are less afraid. When the battles happened back in those years, we were all afraid but now we are used to hearing the sound of gunfire and bombs. SUPERCAPTION: Chin Chun, 74 years old retired farmer. The island is a fortress, with some 30,000 soldiers to a civilian population of around 50,000. Anti parachutist poles and fortified defences are everywhere. Many locals want nothing to do with the DPP's call for independence. They are afraid of the result - not just Chinese sabre-rattling but all out war. VOXPOP (Mandarin):Residents in Kinmen(Quemoy) want unification and peace, hat is our goal, peace. SUPERCAPTION: Local resident. Mandarin/Eng/Nat The end of the Cold War has brought more than an easing of tensions between China and Taiwan - it is allowing Taipei to replace minefields on the fortress island of Quemoy. Later this month specialists will start clearing selected mine dumps and minefields on the island that were laid beginning in the 1950s to repel an invasion from China. On Friday, former Nepalese Gurkha soldiers demonstrated techniques they will use to clear the mines on Quemoy Island - also known as King Men Island. Quemoy lies less than three kilometres (1.8 miles) from the Chinese coast. But the old strategy of repelling an invasion force on land has been altered to preventing such a force from ever establishing a beachhead. The end of the Cold War has brought more than an easing of tensions between China and Taiwan - it is allowing Taipei to replace minefields on the fortress island of Quemoy.
Later this month specialists will start clearing selected mine dumps and minefields on the island that were laid beginning in the 1950s to repel an invasion from China.
On Friday, former Nepalese Gurkha soldiers demonstrated techniques they will use to clear the mines on Quemoy Island - also known as King Men Island.
Quemoy lies less than three kilometres (1.8 miles) from the Chinese coast.
But the old strategy of repelling an invasion force on land has been altered to preventing such a force from ever establishing a beachhead.
In all, thousands of mines will be cleared - it's thought the first dump will be cleared by June.
The demining operation may be a friendly gesture towards China at a time when both sides are looking for ways to revive negotiations on technical issues that could lead to an eventual peace treaty.
However, Quemoy will remain heavily fortified.
An estimated 40-thousand troops will remain garrisoned on the island, which is pockmarked with dugouts and bunkers.
And many beaches will remain mined, though Taiwan would not release figures on the number of mines buried.
Army officials said the mines that would be removed were very old and of no use now.

Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists held onto Quemoy when they were swept out of mainland China by Mao Tse-tung's Communists in 1949.
Chinese troops tried to conquer the island in a hotly contested 1950 battle.
In 1958, Quemoy and the Matsu islands further north became famous internationally as shells rained down at the start of two decades of intermittent bombardment.
But as China replaced military confrontation with detente in the late 1980s, democratic change in Taiwan gradually extended to Quemoy and Matsu.
Direct administration by the military ended in 1992, along with draconian travel and residency restrictions.
Since then, the island has struggled to welcome a flood of tourists drawn by the island's traditional architecture, clean skies and military history.
Clearing the mines will open up new areas for development, to feed this tourism boom..

It is a hazardous task for ships trying to beat the Communist blockade of Quemoy. But it is a vital task if the Nationalist garrison is to hold out. Supplies are reported to be very short. Batteries have almost sealed off the island from help. When supplies DO arrive it is often with this result: a direct hit on a supply ship at the end of a long voyage.

Taiwan's first fully free presidential elections take place in under a month.
China has said it will react with force towards any move to independence. Already some 150,000 troops are on China's coast for military exercises.
A possible target is the island of Quemoy - just 2 kilometres from China. Taiwan's only pro-independence party, the DPP has been campaigning there Friday and Saturday.
At first sight Quemoy is a peaceful island. But lying just two kilometres from China it is at the forefront of Taiwan's defences.
Democratic Progressive Party vice-presidential candidate Frank Hsieh toured the island this weekend, in search of locals ready for to vote for open independence from Mainland China.
The DPP platform is the only one to advocate independence and the subject is a sensitive one.
With less than a month to go before Taiwan's first fully free presidential elections - already some 150,000 troops are gathered on China's coastline for military exercises.
China regards Taiwan as a renegade province that should be retaken by force if necessary and the exercises are seen as an attempt to influence Taiwan's voters.
Quemoy still bears the scars of earlier conflicts, this building stands as a memorial to the dead. China has launched three attacks against the island.
In 1949, Chinese troops were repelled and in 1954 and 1958 the island was heavily shelled.
The bombardment lasted for over forty days, resulting in some 600 deaths. Older islanders have become immune to the constant tension.
SOUNDBITE (Mandarin): " They bombarded us for around 42 to 43 days during the August 23rd battles, after all that, we are less afraid. When the battles happened back in those years, we were all afraid but now we are used to hearing the sound of gunfire and bombs. SUPERCAPTION: Chin Chun, 74 years old retired farmer.
The island is a fortress, with some 30,000 soldiers to a civilian population of around 50,000. Anti parachutist poles and fortified defences are everywhere.
Many locals want nothing to do with the DPP's call for independence. They are afraid of the result - not just Chinese sabre-rattling but all out war.

Officials on the Taiwanese islands of Quemoy - worried about Chinese military exercises in the seas nearby - have made their own contingency plans in case of any attack.
Quemoy, also known as Kinmen, is an archipelago of 12 islands under Taiwanese rule and is situated just 50 kilometres from the Chinese military exercise site.
Worried residents have now reopened a bomb shelter in Chonglin village which was built more than 20 years ago.
There's a big shelter underneath this village square in Chonglin on Quemoy.
With China staging military exercises in nearby coastal waters, the shelter has been reopened - in case of a surprise attack it will be made available to all the villagers.
It was built 20 years ago and has room for two-thousand people
Shelters similar to this one were also built in other villages but this is the biggest.
Quemoy is composed of a small group of 12 islets, controlled by Taiwan and lying just off the south-eastern coast of Fujian Province on mainland China.
It is just a few kilometers away from communist-held territory and is just 50 kilometres from where China is currently conducting military exercises.
About 30-thousand military personnel are stationed in Quemoy and there are about 40-thousand civilian residents.
The Chonglin village chief says that the shelter has been prepared and basic needs like water and electricity are already in place.

Residents of Quemoy do not believe that China will invade Taiwan.
But just in case they do, the people are ready to fight back, like this 66-year-old man who fought the Chinese army back in 1949.
