Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has been reappointed to the post he has held since 2007, by President Putin.
Serdyukov has previously worked for the taxation authorities of St. Petersburg and Moscow and became the Russian Minister of Taxes in 2004.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s distinctive walk, where his right arm rests rigidly to his body, may have been acquired through KGB weapons training, according to a study published Monday
A team of neurologists in the Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy published a research paper in the British Medical Journal which analyzes the Russian leaders unique way of walking describing it as a “gunslinger’s gait.” The study was published in the Christmas edition of the BMJ which looks at more quirky or offbeat topics.
While some media reports have speculated the lack of movement in his right arm when he walks is the result of a stroke or Parkinson’s disease, the study suggests the unique walk may have been picked up while training in the former Soviet intelligence service, the KGB.
“Searching for possible explanations, we encountered a training manual of the former Russian KGB,” the author’s said in the study. “According to this manual, KGB operatives were instructed to keep their weapon in their right hand close to their chest and to move forward with one side, usually the left, presumably allowing subjects to draw the gun as quickly as possible when confronted with a foe.”
Dutch neurologist and movement disorder expert Bastiaan Bloem, who’s the lead author on the study, had considered Putin’s reduced arm swing to be an early indication of Parkinson’s disease.
However, after studying several videos of Putin they found no other symptoms of nervous system disease, such as tremors or lack of coordination. In fact the researchers found he displayed “excellent motor skills,” as a judo black belt, weight lifter and swimmer. Putin’s handwriting too, is fast and steady.
Bloem and his research team examined other high-ranking Russian officials, including Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, former defence ministers Anatoly Serdyukov and Sergei Ivanov, and Col. Gen. Anatoly Sidorov. They found each official had the signature “gunslinger’s gait.”
“We found other examples of a reduced arm swing related to weaponry training: cowboys depicted in movies of the “Wild West” often have a reduced right arm swing,” the authors write.
Putin and Ivanov are both former KGB agents, while Serdyukov and Sidorov received military training, according to the study.
Medvedev, however, has no clear links to the millitary the KGB. So why would he walk like Putin?
“Substantial evidence suggests that Medvedev is being coached to sound, look, and importantly, walk like the president,” the study says.

A parade was separate on three parts - pedestrian, mechanized and air. After the pedestrian columns of servicemen the columns of military technique appeared on the Red area. To the audience the cars of UAZ and "Tigr", armoured troop-carriers, fighting machines of landing and infantry, artillery, zenithal complexes, rocket complexes of S-300, "Iskander" and "Topol-M", were presented.
Air part of parade was opened by the helicopters of Mi-8. After them the group of airplanes flew in composition a heavy transport worker An-124 "Ruslan" and destroyers of Su-27. Then above the Red area flew strategic bomber TU-160, airplanes of Il-78 and TU-95MC, which executed the imitation of refuelling in mid air, battle pretty bombers flew TU-22M3 and assault Su-25. Pilotage groups completed a parade the "Russian knights" and "Swifts".

Anatoliy Eduardovich Serdyukov (Russian: Анатолий Эдуардович Сердюкóв) (born January 8, 1962) is a Russian politician and businessman who has been the Defense Minister of Russia since February 15, 2007. He is known for launching major reforms in the Russian military.
Born at Krasnodar Krai, Serdyukov graduated from Leningrad Institute of Soviet Trade in 1984 with a degree in economics. From 1984 to 1985 he served in the Soviet Army. Since 1985 he had worked in a furniture shop and from 1995 to 2000 was the director general of Furniture Market, a furniture company in Saint Petersburg. Serdyukov's career started to develop very successfully after the election of Vladimir Putin as Russian President in 2000. In 2001 Serdyukov graduated from the Law Department of Saint Petersburg State University. From 2000 to 2001 he served as a Deputy Chief of the Saint Petersburg Directorate of the Tax Ministry of Russia, from 2001 to 2004 he led the Directorate, succeeding Viktor Zubkov, his father-in-law. On March 2, 2004, he was appointed Deputy Tax Minister of Russia.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (Russian: Влади́мир Влади́мирович Пу́тин; IPA: [vɫɐˈdʲimʲɪr vɫɐˈdʲimʲɪrəvʲɪtɕ ˈputʲɪn] (
listen); born 7 October 1952) is a Russian politician who has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2012. Putin previously served as President from 2000 to 2008 and as Prime Minister of Russia from 1999 to 2000, and again from 2008 to 2012. Putin also serves as chairman of United Russia and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Union of Russia and Belarus. He became acting President on 31 December 1999, when president Boris Yeltsin resigned in a surprising move. Putin won the 2000 presidential election; in 2004 he was re-elected for a second term lasting until 7 May 2008.
Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term. After his successor Dmitry Medvedev won the 2008 presidential election, Putin was nominated by Medvedev to be Russia's Prime Minister; Putin took office on 8 May 2008 and a period of so-called "tandemocracy" followed. In September 2011, Putin and Medvedev agreed he should seek a third, non-consecutive term in the 2012 presidential election, which he won in the first round on 4 March 2012.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s distinctive walk, where his right arm rests rigidly to his body, may have been acquired through KGB weapons training, according to a study published Monday
A team of neurologists in the Netherlands, Portugal, and Italy published a research paper in the British Medical Journal which analyzes the Russian leaders unique way of walking describing it as a “gunslinger’s gait.” The study was published in the Christmas edition of the BMJ which looks at more quirky or offbeat topics.
While some media reports have speculated the lack of movement in his right arm when he walks is the result of a stroke or Parkinson’s disease, the study suggests the unique walk may have been picked up while training in the former Soviet intelligence service, the KGB.
“Searching for possible explanations, we encountered a training manual of the former Russian KGB,” the author’s said in the study. “According to this manual, KGB operatives were instructed to keep their weapon in their right hand close to their chest and to move forward with one side, usually the left, presumably allowing subjects to draw the gun as quickly as possible when confronted with a foe.”
Dutch neurologist and movement disorder expert Bastiaan Bloem, who’s the lead author on the study, had considered Putin’s reduced arm swing to be an early indication of Parkinson’s disease.
However, after studying several videos of Putin they found no other symptoms of nervous system disease, such as tremors or lack of coordination. In fact the researchers found he displayed “excellent motor skills,” as a judo black belt, weight lifter and swimmer. Putin’s handwriting too, is fast and steady.
Bloem and his research team examined other high-ranking Russian officials, including Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, former defence ministers Anatoly Serdyukov and Sergei Ivanov, and Col. Gen. Anatoly Sidorov. They found each official had the signature “gunslinger’s gait.”
“We found other examples of a reduced arm swing related to weaponry training: cowboys depicted in movies of the “Wild West” often have a reduced right arm swing,” the authors write.
Putin and Ivanov are both former KGB agents, while Serdyukov and Sidorov received military training, according to the study.
Medvedev, however, has no clear links to the millitary the KGB. So why would he walk like Putin?
“Substantial evidence suggests that Medvedev is being coached to sound, look, and importantly, walk like the president,” the study says.

About eight thousand, military equipment and air force servicemen took part in a parade. Accepted a parade, acting as secretary of defence Anatoliy Serdyukov, a president Dmitry Medvedev came forward with oration.
A parade was separate on three parts - pedestrian, mechanized and air. After the pedestrian columns of servicemen the columns of military technique appeared on the Red area. To the audience the cars of UAZ and "Tigr", armoured troop-carriers, fighting machines of landing and infantry, artillery, zenithal complexes, rocket complexes of S-300, "Iskander" and "Topol-M", were presented.
Air part of parade was opened by the helicopters of Mi-8. After them the group of airplanes flew in composition a heavy transport worker An-124 "Ruslan" and destroyers of Su-27. Then above the Red area flew strategic bomber TU-160, airplanes of Il-78 and TU-95MC, which executed the imitation of refuelling in mid air, battle pretty bombers flew TU-22M3 and assault Su-25. Pilotage groups completed a parade the "Russian knights" and "Swifts".
В параде приняли участие около восьми тысяч военнослужащих, боевая техника и военная авиация. Принимал парад, исполняющий обязанности министра обороны Анатолий Сердюков, с торжественной речью выступил президент Дмитрий Медведев.
Парад был разделен на три части -- пешую, механизированную и воздушную. Вслед за пешими колоннами военнослужащих на Красной площади появились колонны военной техники. STORYLINE :
The Russian defence minister held talks with his Indian counterpart in New Delhi on Monday, as their two countries moved to deepen their military ties with a proposal to extend the tenure of an existing inter-governmental military commission for a further 10 years from 2010 to 2020.
Russian defence minister, Anatoly Serdyukov, arrived in India on Sunday and was met by his counterpart, A. K. Antony, who greeted him with an honour guard before their talks began.
The ministers later attended a session of the Indian-Russian inter-governmental commission for military-technical cooperation.
The commission's sessions are held annually and alternate between New Delhi and Moscow. The last meeting took place in the Russian capital in October 2007.
The current program comprises about 200 joint projects, including the modernisation of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier for the Indian navy and the transfer of technology for the licensed assembly of T-90 tanks in India.
Russia has demanded a revision of the contract price to refurbish the Soviet-era aircraft carrier.
India's defence minister said they had moved closer to resolving the price for the Gorshkov aircraft carrier, as well as transfer issues for the T-90 tanks technology.
Both countries have moved forward to become partners in defence co-operation, going beyond the traditional vendor-seller relations for joint development of weapons and equipment, the ministers told reporters at a joint press conference.
The two countries are also collaborating on the creation of a multipurpose transport aircraft and a multipurpose fifth-generation fighter jet.
India has bought more than 30 (b) billion US dollars (20 (b) billion euros) worth of Soviet and Russian arms since 1960, and has ranked alongside China in recent years as a top customer for Russian weapons.
Russia and India also have conducted joint military exercises.
Moscow is also building a nuclear power plant at Kudankulam in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and in January the two countries agreed that Russia would build four additional nuclear reactors for the plant.
After Monday's talks, New Delhi and Moscow also decided to form a body headed by their defence secretaries to coordinate several working groups on military cooperation.

Rusya savunma Bakanı Anatoliy Serdyukov, NATO ve ABD ile füze kalkanı konusunda yürütülen görüşmelerin çıkmaza girdiğini belirtti. Rusya Savunma Bakanlığı tarafından Moskova'da düzenlenen ve üç gün sürecek olan 'Füze Savunma Konferansı'nın ilk gününde, Savunma Bakanı Serdyukov, NATO'nun 'Füze Kalkanı Projesi' ile ilgili açıklamalarda bulundu. Rusya, NATO ve ABD arasında şu ana kadar yapılan görüşmelerde kabul edilebilir bir çözüme ulaşılamadığını ifade eden Serdyukov, şunları söyledi:

Rusya savunma Bakanı Anatoliy Serdyukov, NATO ve ABD ile füze kalkanı konusunda yürütülen görüşmelerin çıkmaza girdiğini belirtti. Rusya Savunma Bakanlığı tarafından Moskova'da düzenlenen ve üç gün sürecek olan 'Füze Savunma Konferansı'nın ilk gününde, Savunma Bakanı Serdyukov, NATO'nun 'Füze Kalkanı Projesi' ile ilgili açıklamalarda bulundu. Rusya, NATO ve ABD arasında şu ana kadar yapılan görüşmelerde kabul edilebilir bir çözüme ulaşılamadığını ifade eden Serdyukov, şunları söyledi:
'Şu an taraflar arasındaki görüşmeler çıkmaza girmiş durumda. Görünen o ki NATO Rusya'nın görüşlerini dikkate almadan, füze kalkanı konusundaki çalışmalarına devam etmek istiyor. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday met with Sergey Shoigu and informed him that he has dismissed Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov due to the recent scandal over alleged real estate scams involving nearly $100 million run by subcontractor Oboronservis.
Sergey Shoigu, Governor of the Moscow region, has been appointed as the new defense minister, Putin said.
"Taking into account the situation around the Defense Ministry, and in order to create conditions for an objective probe into all the issues, I decided to relieve Defense Minister Serdyukov of his duties... I am asking you to take this office of the Defense Minister of the Russian Federation."

Just two days after two Iranian warships reached the Syrian port of Latakia via the Suez Canal, Friday, Feb. 25, an Iranian-Syrian naval cooperation accord was signed providing for Iran to build its first Mediterranean naval base at the Syrian port, debkafile's military and Iranian sources reveal. Russian army chief medical officer sacked after pneumonia deaths
Russia's new defence minister has sacked the chief medical officer of the armed forces after five soldiers died of pneumonia. The minister, Sergei Shoigu, was dissatisfied with the standard of military healthcare under Vyacheslav Novikov, a ministry statement said. He has not been directly blamed for the deaths, which are being investigated. One soldier died of pneumonia on Sunday and four others in recent weeks. Army conditions are often very basic. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev answered questions from television journalists in a live program on Friday for Russia's leading TV channels One, RTR, Ren TV, NTV and Dozhd.
This is the first such interview for Medvedev in the role of prime minister. The struggle against corruption, measures to tighten Russian legislation and attitude to the opposition were central questions of the interview.
One of the first most acute questions was about the high-profile scandals and the potential involvement in them of some very high-ranking officials, including the former defense minister Anatoly Serdyukov.
"Now a few words about Serdyukov and other scandals. No matter what some journalists say about the former defense minister, he hasn't even been charged. He is not even in any way involved in this investigation. Investigation is underway, and it should establish objective truth in this case. Furthermore, as we know, only the court can give the final verdict on who is guilty and who is not. Investigation is just an element of the procedure; there is also defense. Both the prosecution and defense should present their arguments", he said.
Fighting corruption among officials can cause damage to the reputation of the authorities, but it is necessary to tackle it, even if some of the current leaders do not like it, he said.
"I have always said that unless we decide to launch the anti-corruption campaign of our own good will, no one is going to do it for us. And I believe that the ongoing anti-corruption investigations have been prepared by what we have been doing over the last few years. What I mean here is that for the first time in history -- and we're talking about the entire history of Russia, not just the contemporary history, or the Soviet period, so, for the very first time -- we have produced anti-corruption legislation and joined international anti-corruption conventions."
In the televised interview Medvedev that said that oppositionists must become responsible politicians instead of inciting their allies to violate law at meetings and protest rallies.
"Those who claim to have some kind of political future must act in a responsible manner. You mentioned Udaltsov. If he's really such a staunch champion of the leftist ideas, he must defend his stance in a way that is in line with the constitution, rather than inciting his supporters to violate law during rallies -- promote his agenda in a legal way, rather than breach the demonstrations law."

Adding intrigue was the fact that Serdyukov is married to the daughter one of Putin's close allies, a former prime minister who wields enormous influence as chairman of state-run oil giant Gazprom. Media reports suggest that Serdyukov's alleged philandering angered Viktor Zubkov and may have been a factor in the sacking.
But most experts see a behind-the-scenes power struggle at the root of Putin's decision.
Carnegie Centre Moscow Director Dmitri Trenin:
"Serdyukov's sacking was not a primarily political step. It may have had something to do with corruption, may have had something to do with the various forces within the Kremlin as a whole not quite happy with Serdyukov. The final decision had to be made by (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, he made that decision, but not because he was displeased with the way Serdyukov was conducting the military reform effort. Serdyukov also, as we all know, wanted out. At least on two previous occasions he talked about his resignation. He's had enough, he's had very interesting five years as the defence minister. He made a few friends but he made quite a few enemies in that position too."
Serdyukov had masterminded a campaign to drastically cut the ranks of officers and overhaul an antiquated military structure to create a leaner, meaner force that might restore Russia's faded military glory. He has been replaced with Sergei Shoigu, who was emergencies minister from 1994 until this year, when he became governor of the Moscow region. Shoigu has long been loyal to Putin.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) defence ministers gathered at a meeting in Lithuania on Thursday where one of the subjects expected to dominate the talks is discussion of troop reinforcements in Afghanistan.
The alliance is split between nations with troops on the front line in Afghanistan and those refusing to send troops to the front line against the resurgent Taliban in southern Afghanistan.
NATO, through its International Security Assistance Force, is in charge in the country, although the top commander is an American, Army General Daniel McNeill, and the United States is the biggest provider of troops.
All 26 NATO nations have troops in Afghanistan. They have expanded the force from 5,000 to 43,000 since it was launched in 2003, but many allies, including Germany, France, Spain, Turkey and Italy, have refused to send significant numbers of combat troops to the south.
That refusal has opened up a rift with the United States, Canada, Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Romania whose troops in the southern provinces have borne the brunt of Taliban violence over the past year.
Canada has threatened to pull its 1,700 troops out of Kandahar next year unless allies provide 1,000 reinforcements.
The Vilnius talks will also discuss Kosovo, where 16,000 NATO peacekeepers are braced for the threat of unrest if, as expected, the province declares independence from Serbia this month. Ministers may discuss widening the peacekeepers' role to help train Kosovo's own security forces.
Kosovo will feature in talks on Friday between the NATO ministers and Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov. Russia opposes Kosovo's independence and is also embroiled in disputes with NATO over missile defence and arms control in Europe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the defence minister after his ministry was caught up in a corruption scandal.
Anatoly Serdyukov has been replaced with a former emergencies minister and loyal ally of Mr Putin, Sergei Shoigu.

Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev has again set out Russia's position over the situation in Libya during his meeting with US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates at his Gorky residence on Tuesday.
Medvedev expressed deep concerned about the form of implementing the UN Security Council resolution on Libya, which was passed on March 17.
"The president once again voiced his opinions about the current situation in Libya. Medvedev expressed his concerns about the way the UN Security Council resolution on imposing a no-fly zone is being implemented and about possible civilian casualties because of the indiscriminate deployment of air forces," the President's press service said.
Russia abstained from the UN's decision to take military action in the region, electiing not to use its right of veto. If Russia had vetoed the resolution, it could not have been passed.
Russia's Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, Presidential Aide Sergey Prikhodko and Assistant Secretary of Defense Alexander Vershbow all took part in the meeting.
Serdyukov and Gates met in Moscow earlier the same day to discuss Libya, Afghanistan and missile defense in Europe.
Speaking about coalition forces' attacks in Libya, Anatoly Serdyukov said that the current clashes weree unacceptable and called for an end to the violence which has claimed the lives of civilians.
"Regrettably, the latest events have shown that actual hostilities have been launched in this country, as a result of which civilian facilities have been damaged and civilians have been killed. This is unacceptable," Serdyukov said after a meeting with Robert Gates.
"Everything should be done to stop the violence," he added.
"We are convinced that an immediate ceasefire and the start of dialogue is the shortest way to reliably ensure the security of civilians," Serdyukov said.
Roberts Gates expressed the point of view that only Libyans have the power and the right to decide the fate of their own country, but that the coalition's presence in Libya is necessary in the context of UN resolution 1973 in order to guarantee civilians' security.
"I also told him that I thought the significant military fighting that has been going on should recede in the next few days," Gates said at a joint briefing.
Previously on Monday, Russia's president called for an end to the conflict in Libya. He insisted that the problem should be solved through negotiations. He confirmed that Russia wouldl not take part in any military action or send its troops into Libya.
"The Russian Federation, from the very beginning, has wanted the resolution of this problem to take place thorough peaceful means. At the same time, we were very thorough in monitoring the situation and we definitely condemned the actions of the Libyan government with respect to its own people," Medvedev said.
Medvedev reaffirmed Russia's willingness to act as a mediator in any negotiations toward a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Libya.
The situation in Libya has also been the focus of a meeting between the Prime Ministers of Russia and Slovenia.
Journalists asked Vladimir Putin to comment on his recent harsh comparison of the Libyan campaign to a crusade.
The premier's reply countered media speculation about differences within the Russian leadership over the issue.
"On the unity or difference of views on events in Libya within the Russian leadership, the President of the Russian Federation is the only one who defines foreign policy, and there can be no divergence here. As for the crux of the matter, we should be thinking about the victims, the number of whom is growing as a result of the civil war and the bombing of Libyan territory. Those who are behind this tragedy should think about this, and pray that their souls will be pardoned."

Russian government has endorsed the measures taken by Sri Lankan government against terrorism and pledged its fullest support to the endeavor. This was revealed when Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa met with the Russian government officials during an official visit to Russia recently.
On a special invitation made by Russian Minister of Defence Anatoliy Serdyukov, the Sri Lankan Defence Secretary embarked on this visit with a high-powered delegation. The Sri Lankan delegation was welcomed with special honors at the Red Square and Kremlin and had the opportunity to hold discussions with Russian Defence Ministry officials and officials of few other establishments.
During the visit, Defence Secretary Rajapaksa met Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov and had bilateral discussions. During the discussions, the Russian government viewed Sri Lanka's struggle against terrorism similar to the measures taken in the past by Russia to defeat Chechnya terrorists. Also, Russian government pledged all measures will be taken to provide military technology and expertise to Sri Lanka in its endeavor.
Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunge accompanied the Defence Secretary during this visit.

Russia and France on Wednesday called for unity in the standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, but also stressed that the international community should remain open to dialogue with Tehran on the issue.
Speaking after a session of the Russian-French security cooperation council in Moscow on Wednesday, Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, said France and Russia agreed on their stance on Iran's nuclear program.
"Both France and Russia are convinced we should be guided by only one goal: that of preventing the violation of the nuclear non-proliferation regime," said Lavrov.
The meeting between the foreign and defence ministers of the two UN Security Council members came as the UN nuclear watchdog agency prepared to convey its findings in a report which is expected to confirm that Iran was continuing uranium enrichment activities despite international calls for suspension.
The report by Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), could trigger harsher sanctions against Iran from the UN Security Council, which agreed in December 2006 on punishments that were watered down under pressure from Russia and China.
Philippe Douste-Blazy, the French Foreign Minister, said nations seeking to resolve the conflict must should continue to display firmness and unanimity on the issue of Iran's nuclear programme.
Iran's refusal to halt enrichment has deepened concerns it may be seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran has said it will never give up its right under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty to enrich uranium and produce nuclear fuel even at the risk of sanctions but has offered guarantees that it will not make a bomb.

"Both France and Russia are convinced we should be guided by only one goal: that of preventing the violation of the nuclear non-proliferation regime," said Lavrov.
The meeting between the foreign and defence ministers of the two UN Security Council members came as the UN nuclear watchdog agency prepared to convey its findings in a report which is expected to confirm that Iran was continuing uranium enrichment activities despite international calls for suspension.
The report by Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), could trigger harsher sanctions against Iran from the UN Security Council, which agreed in December 2006 on punishments that were watered down under pressure from Russia and China.
Philippe Douste-Blazy, the French Foreign Minister, said nations seeking to resolve the conflict must should continue to display firmness and unanimity on the issue of Iran's nuclear programme.
Iran's refusal to halt enrichment has deepened concerns it may be seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran has said it will never give up its right under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty to enrich uranium and produce nuclear fuel even at the risk of sanctions but has offered guarantees that it will not make a bomb.

The base will include a large Iranian Revolutionary Guards weapons depot stocked with hardware chosen by the IRGC subject to prior notification to Damascus. Latakia harbor will be deepened, widened and provided with new "coastal installations" to accommodate the large warships and submarines destined to use these facilities.
Iran has much to celebrate, debkafile's military sources report. It has acquired its first military foothold on a Mediterranean shore and its first permanent military presence on Syrian soil. Tehran will be setting in place the logistical infrastructure for accommodating incoming Iranian troops to fight in a potential Middle East war.
According to our sources, the "cadets" the Kharg cruiser, one of the two Iranian warships allowed to transit the Suez Canal, was said to be carrying were in fact the first construction crews for building the new port facilities.
Two more events were carefully synchronized to take place in the same week.
On Feb. 24, as the Iranian warships headed from the Suez Canal to Syria, Hamas fired long-range made-in-Iran Grade missiles from the Gaza Strip into Israel, one hitting the main Negev city of Beersheba for the first time since Israel's Gaza campaign two years ago - as debkafile reported on that day. Tehran was using its Palestinian surrogate to flaunt its success in getting its first warships through the Suez Canal in the face of Israeli protests. The Iranians were also parading their offensive agenda in deploying warships on the Mediterranean just 287 kilometers north of Israel's northernmost coastal town of Nahariya.
The second occurrence was a contract announced by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov for the sale of advanced Russian shore-to-sea cruise missiles to Syria. The Yakhont missile system has a range of 300 kilometers and skims the waves low enough to be undetected by radar. debkafile's military sources take this sale as representing Moscow's nod in favor of the new Iranian base at Latakia, 72 kilometers from the permanent naval base Russia is building at the Syrian port of Tartous.
The Russians are willing to contribute towards the Iranian port's defenses and looking forward to cooperation between the Russian, Iranian and Syrian fleets in the eastern Mediterranean opposite the US Sixth Fleet's regular beat.
This unfolding proximity presents the United States with a serious strategic challenge and Israel with a new peril, which was nonetheless dismissed out of hand by Israel's defense minister Ehud Barak. In a radio interview Monday, Feb. 28, he brushed aside the Iranian warships' passage through the Suez as "an outing for cadets" which did not require an Israeli response. He added, "For now, there is no operational threat to Israel."
According to Barak, the Suez Canal is open to all of the world's warships and the two Iranian vessels' transit could not have been prevented. He omitted to explain how Egypt did prevent it for 30 years and why it was permitted now. The defense minister went on to speak of "fresh signs that President Bashar Assad is willing to resume peace talks with Israel."
Both Barak's assessments were knocked down by Damascus on the same day.
Syrian Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Ali Mohammad Habib soon put him right on the "cadets' outing." I believe it was an implicit anti-Semite attack. I don't think the modern Germany should be supportive of anti-Semitism."
The Russian president also clarified that he dismissed Anatoly Serdyukov as defense minister due to concerns over his ability to oversee property-related operations.
However, "neither the investigators nor the judiciary have brought any individual accusations against Mr. Serdyukov."
Concluding the meeting, Vladimir Putin emphasized the strategic relations between the countries, and suggested that "Germany's national soccer team to play for Russia at the FIFA 2018 World Cup, and for the Russian team to play for Germany."

The Russian army has turned to rap in an effort to recruit new candidates.
In a video posted on YouTube, civil servant Anton Gubankov is seen rapping about the virtues of the country's men and women in uniform.
He rhymes about the army's pride and culture of service and says that rudeness and cursing are not a part of it.
The video is meant to attract new recruits for the Russian military's fall call-up deadline but appears to be a tough sell to some youngsters on the streets of Moscow.
[Andrei, 22-Year-Old]:
"I think this video will not influence people's choice in any way. Because nobody wants to waste a year of his life in the army when you can do a lot of useful things for yourself, and for the people around you."
Russia's military, with roughly one million servicemen, is still largely reliant on Soviet-era infrastructure and weaponry.
Rights activists say brutal bullying has been rampant since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and the military has long been plagued by corruption.
The top military prosecutor said in 2011 that one-fifth of the budget was stolen or embezzled.

"Look at what's going on in the army right now. Look at the behavior of the Minister of Defence, the one that was removed from his position, the one that stole money from the country and tried to demolish the army, who cut the budget and the military. Let them sort out their problems first, and then recruit normal people."

The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, and US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday, following a tense meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the start of talks on a range of thorny issues, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday warned US officials to back off a plan to install missile defences in Eastern Europe or risk harming relations with Moscow.
He also threatened to pull his country out of a Cold War-era treaty limiting intermediate range missiles unless it was extended to countries beyond the United States and Russia, which are now the only signatories.
At the start of the meeting with Rice and Gates, Lavrov said the Americans had presented detailed proposals to Putin on missile defence and arms control and a treaty on reducing conventional forces in Europe.
He offered no details but said the Russian government was ready to seek compromise.

The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, and US Defence Secretary, Robert Gates, held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday, following a tense meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At the start of talks on a range of thorny issues, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday warned US officials to back off a plan to install missile defences in Eastern Europe or risk harming relations with Moscow.
He also threatened to pull his country out of a Cold War-era treaty limiting intermediate range missiles unless it was extended to countries beyond the United States and Russia, which are now the only signatories.
At the start of the meeting with Rice and Gates, Lavrov said the Americans had presented detailed proposals to Putin on missile defence and arms control and a treaty on reducing conventional forces in Europe.
He offered no details but said the Russian government was ready to seek compromise.
"We still have differences and there is no need to hide that, but, as our President has stressed, we want to move towards each other and to continue our dialogue based on the principles of reciprocity, transparency and mutual respect of our interests, and first of all of the interests in the security sphere," Lavrov said.
Rice also said the two countries were committed to cooperating on a broad range of issues.
"We have indeed come to talk about a number of issues, about missile defence, about how we might continue our cooperation against global nuclear terrorism, our budding civil nuclear cooperation, we have a number of issues," Rice said.
The Russian government sees the US missile defence plan, which Washington describes as a hedge against the threat of missile attack from Iran, as a worrisome step toward weakening Russian security.
