In his twilight years, celebrated impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir is tormented by
the loss of his wife, the pains of his arthritic old age and the terrible news that his

But when a young girl miraculously enters his world, the old painter is filled with a
new, wholly unexpected energy. Blazing with life, radiantly beautiful, Andrée will
become his last model and the wellspring of a remarkable rejuvenation. Back at the
family home to convalesce, Jean too falls under the spell of the new, redheaded star
in the Renoir firmament. In their Mediterranean Eden - and in the face of his father's
fierce opposition - he falls in love with this wild, untamable spirit...and as he does so,
within weak-willed, battle-shaken Jean, a filmmaker begins to grow.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Filmed Painting at Home (1919)
This is unique footage of the great Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919).
He is seen at home, working on a canvas.
I'm just astonished it exists - I never imagined I'd see film of him painting - you even get a sense of his method of applying the oil to the canvas.
Also present in this footage are Renoir's youngest son Claude, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father's hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who made this film in 1915 and who appears midway through the film sitting down and talking with the artist.

During this period, Renoir worked in constant pain due to severe rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that left him unable to walk, with a permanently clenched hand, and near-paralyzed. When asked by Henri Matisse why he kept painting, Renoir replied, "The pain passes, but the beauty remains."
Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated colour, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions. The female nude was one of his primary subjects.
Pierre-Auguste was the father of actor Pierre Renoir, filmmaker Jean Renoir, and ceramic artist Claude Renoir. He was also the grandfather of the filmmaker Claude Renoir, son of Pierre.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges-1841/Cagnes-sur-Mer-1919) pintor francés, figura central dentro del desarrollo del movimiento impresionista, se formó como pintor de porcelanas en el obrador de los Lévy, si bien su interés por la pintura hizo que visitase el Musée du Louvre con frecuencia, donde, alrededor de 1860, comenzó a copiar las obras de los maestros clásicos. Desde 1861 asistió a las clases de dibujo de Charles Gleyre y finalmente fue admitido en la École des Beaux-Arts en 1862, aunque permaneció ligado al estudio de Gleyre, donde trabó conocimiento con Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley y Frédéric Bazille. Junto a ellos, realizó excursiones al bosque de Fontainebleau y pronto se sintió atraído por la práctica de la pintura pleinairista
En 1864 se expuso por primera vez en el Salon una obra de Renoir "La esmeralda", que él mismo destruiría posteriormente. Sin embargo, en los años anteriores el Salon había rechazado diferentes obras suyas, algo que le haría participar en el Salon des Refusés de 1863.
Tras una pausa por la guerra franco-prusiana, en la que fue llamado a filas, Renoir expuso en la Primera Exposición Impresionista de 1874. Durante estos años inmediatos al fin de la guerra, pasó temporadas junto a Monet en Argenteuil, donde ambos realizaron paisajes que se convertirían en ejemplos paradigmáticos del estilo impresionista
Su participación en las exposiciones impresionistas finalizó tras la tercera, celebrada en 1877, y a partir de 1878 sus obras fueron admitidas en el Salon oficial. Este cambio de actitud coincidió con una crisis creativa en la que Renoir se desvinculó del impresionismo. Sus composiciones se volvieron más equilibradas y aumentó en ellas la importancia del dibujo. La influencia de Jean- Auguste-Dominique Ingres y de su viaje a Italia, en el que se sintió especialmente atraído por Rafael, se hizo patente en sus nuevas obras, que tuvieron en las bañistas uno de sus temas más recurrentes. En. busca de nuevos campos de inspiración, Renoir viajó mucho dentro y fuera de Francia, visitando los museos de muchas ciudades europeas, como Dresde, Londres y Madrid.
Alrededor de 1900, la fama de Renoir se había extendido y estaba considerado como un gran artista. Con el cambio de siglo su salud empeoró y sus problemas reumáticos hicieron que se trasladase a una pequeña localidad del sur de Francia, Cagnes-sur-Mer, donde compró una casa, hoy museo. Finalmente tuvo que dejar de pintar y comenzó a dedicarse a la escultura, tarea que realizaba gracias a la ayuda de un joven escultor que llevaba a cabo las indicaciones del maestro.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (US 
/rɛnˈwɑr/ or UK /ˈrɛnwɑr/; French: [pjɛʁ oɡyst ʁənwaʁ]; 1841–1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty, and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau."
Pierre-Auguste was the father of actor Pierre Renoir and filmmaker Jean Renoir.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, France, the child of a working class family. As a boy, he worked in a porcelain factory where his drawing talents led to him being chosen to paint designs on fine china. He also painted hangings for overseas missionaries and decorations on fans before he enrolled in art school. During those early years, he often visited the Louvre to study the French master painters.
In 1862, he began studying art under Charles Gleyre in Paris. There he met Alfred Sisley, Frédéric Bazille, and Claude Monet. At times during the 1860s, he did not have enough money to buy paint. Although Renoir first started exhibiting paintings at the Paris Salon in 1864, recognition did not come for another ten years, due, in part, to the turmoil of the Franco-Prussian War.

Plot: Set in Paris in 1919, biopic centers on the life of late Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, focusing on his last days as well as his rivalry with Pablo Picasso. Modigliani, a Jew, has fallen in love with Jeanne, a young and beautiful Catholic girl. The couple has an illegitimate child, and Jeanne's bigoted parents send the baby to a faraway convent to be raised by nuns. Modigliani is distraught and needs money to rescue and raise his child. The answer arrives in the shape of Paris' annual art competition. Prize money and a guaranteed career await the winner. Neither Modigliani, nor his dearest friend and rival Picasso have ever entered the competition, believing that it is beneath true artists like themselves. But push comes to shove with the welfare of his child on the line, and Modigliani signs up for the competition in a drunken and drug-induced tirade. Picasso follows suit and all of Paris is aflutter with excitement at who will win. With the balance of his relationship with Jeanne on the line, Modigliani tackles this work with the hopes of creating a masterpiece, and knows that all the artists of Paris are doing the same.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Filmed Painting at Home (1919) This is unique footage of the great Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). He is seen at home, working on a canvas. I'm just astonished it exists - I never imagined I'd see film of him painting - you even get a sense of his method of applying the oil to the canvas. Also present in this footage are Renoir's youngest son Claude, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father's hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who made this film in 1915 and who appears midway through the film sitting down and talking with the artist. During this period, Renoir worked in constant pain due to severe rheumatoid arthritis, a condition that left him unable to walk, with a permanently clenched hand, and near-paralyzed. When asked by Henri Matisse why he kept painting, Renoir replied, "The pain passes, but the beauty remains." Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated colour, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions. The female nude was one of his primary subjects. Pierre-Auguste was the father of actor Pierre Renoir, filmmaker Jean Renoir, and ceramic artist Claude Renoir. He was also the grandfather of the filmmaker Claude Renoir, son of Pierre. He is seen at home, working on a canvas.
I'm just astonished it exists - I never imagined I'd see film of him painting - you even get a sense of his method of applying the oil to the canvas.
Also present in this footage are Renoir's youngest son Claude, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father's hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who made this film in 1915 and who appears midway through the film sitting down and talking with the artist.

Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated colour, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions. The female nude was one of his primary subjects.
Pierre-Auguste was the father of actor Pierre Renoir, filmmaker Jean Renoir, and ceramic artist Claude Renoir. He was also the grandfather of the filmmaker Claude Renoir, son of Pierre.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges-1841/Cagnes-sur-Mer-1919) pintor francés, figura central dentro del desarrollo del movimiento impresionista, se formó como pintor de porcelanas en el obrador de los Lévy, si bien su interés por la pintura hizo que visitase el Musée du Louvre con frecuencia, donde, alrededor de 1860, comenzó a copiar las obras de los maestros clásicos. Desde 1861 asistió a las clases de dibujo de Charles Gleyre y finalmente fue admitido en la École des Beaux-Arts en 1862, aunque permaneció ligado al estudio de Gleyre, donde trabó conocimiento con Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley y Frédéric Bazille. Junto a ellos, realizó excursiones al bosque de Fontainebleau y pronto se sintió atraído por la práctica de la pintura pleinairista
En 1864 se expuso por primera vez en el Salon una obra de Renoir "La esmeralda", que él mismo destruiría posteriormente. Sin embargo, en los años anteriores el Salon había rechazado diferentes obras suyas, algo que le haría participar en el Salon des Refusés de 1863.
