Lincang (simplified Chinese: 临沧市; traditional Chinese: 臨滄市; pinyin: Líncāng Shì) is a prefecture-level city located in Yunnan, China.
Lincang has a climate tempered strongly by its low latitude and high elevation. Falling just short of the humid subtropical zone (Köppen Cwa), it features a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb). Winters are sunny and dry, featuring warm days and cool, often significantly cooler nights. Summers are warm and very humid, with the great majority of days receiving some rainfall; sunshine less than 30% of the time from June to August. Monthly mean temperatures range from 11.2 °C (52.2 °F) in January to 21.6 °C (70.9 °F) in June, with an annual mean of 17.5 °C (63.5 °F). Rainfall is heavily concentrated in the warmer months.
Lincang is the mountainous home of the Wa ethnic minority and was historically seen as too "wild" to be worth settling by neighboring powers, notably British Burma and ancient China. This may have had some connection to the Wa's image as head-hunters.
