A Russian Soyuz-STB rocket launched from Kourou in French Guiana today, 25th June 2013 at 19:27 UTC. This was the first Soyuz launch from Kourou this year and the 5th overall.
The rocket carried the first four satellites of the O3b Constellation. O3b will provide internet access for hard to reach parts of the world. 8 more O3b satellites will launch in a further two launches later this year and then in 2014.

Kourou, French Guiana
Kourou is a commune in French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. In addition to being an administrative district within French Guiana, it is also the main town within that district.
Within the Kourou district lies the Guiana Space Centre, France and the European Space Agency's main spaceport.
Geography
Some 60 km (37 mi) northwest of the French Guyanese capital Cayenne the Kourou River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. At the mouth of this river sits the town of Kourou, which is ringed by four hills: Carapa, Pariacabo, Café and Lombard, with the Singes and Condamine mountains not far behind. There are three lakes within the town's city limits: Lake Bois Diable (where one can take lessons in jetski and other aquatic sports), Lake Marie-Claire (the smallest and calmest), and Lake Bois Chaudat (the biggest of the three; also open to sport lovers, especially canoers and kayakers). Long white sand beaches and some rocky outcrops line the town's ocean coast, the riverbank and all points inland consisting mostly of mangrove and dense tropical rainforest.

Checked out a rocket launch, hitchhiked everywhere, and even got a 5-course French meal in for free as a walker-by took pity on us poor backpackers. We then stayed in Cayenne with the lovely Elisabeth and her housemates who we found via couchsurf. Genuinely lovely people, shame I didn't have any footage of them.

We jumped in a boat in Suriname and came to this awesome country. Checked out a rocket launch, hitchhiked everywhere, and even got a 5-course French meal in for free as a walker-by took pity on us poor backpackers. We then stayed in Cayenne with the lovely Elisabeth and her housemates who we found via couchsurf. Genuinely lovely people, shame I didn't have any footage of them.

"Officially part of France, speaking french(and various creoles and imported languages), using the Euro and with prices to match Paris. However here, i had the pleasure of sleeping in a hammock on the beach in an indiginous village, watching giant leatherback turtles(up to 300kgs) come ashore to lay their eggs just a few meters away. whether its watching the hatchlings clumsily find their way to the sea or watching a leatherback laying her eggs at sunrise, or simply taking in the sound of the waves after not seeing the sea for over four months, the longest ive ever been away from it.
Also french Guyana is the setting for the book Papillion and you can visit the camps and the penal islands. i slept on one of the islands, an empty tropical island with my hammock slung between two trees over the deserted golden beach, with the sound of the waves over the crackling of the bonfire at night on an island surrounded by dolphins and turtles.
I was also supposed to watch a spaceship take off here, but 20mins before launch it was cancelled. silly french! i mean its not like its rocket science!
I also met the nicest people here, and strangers invited me to sleep in their houses in all the towns except one, which was great as tourist infrastructure is lacking and accomodation exceptionally expensive."

Devil’s Island is the third largest island of the Îles du Salut island group in the Atlantic Ocean. It is located 14 km off the coast of French Guiana in South America just north of the town of Kourou. Known as “the Green Hell” and described as one of the world’s most notorious penal colonies, Devil’s Island ranks high among French Guiana’s tourist attractions. Run-down cells, the prison headquarters and an infant cemetery are all part of the agenda. But is the once disease-plagued island, where thousands of convicts died in horrid conditions. (Source)

That’s down from a high of 46,000 in 2007, but it’s the highest number in years, and there are concerns that visitors could be bringing diseases or seeds that may disrupt the fragile Antarctic ecosystem. All prospective tourists are encouraged to book with the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, whose members promote safe and environmentally responsible private-sector travel to the Antarctic. Plastination is a technique used in anatomy to preserve a body for study purposes, but it turns out that it can also be a good source of revenue. Dr Gunther von Hagen’s museum has stirred as much controversy as it has received applause. What you can see here among other things are techniques of dissection presented interactively and real human bodies “involved” in all sorts of activities.
While nobody is denying the huge contribution Plastinarium makes to the training of medical students, was it really necessary to seat the exhibits at the poker table or on a bike? And why would anyone other than a doctor or a young adept of medicine want to see all this from up close? The truth is however that since the opening in 2006, Plastinarium has received over a 100 thousand visits. (Source)

But, it may be one of the least visited countries in the world. There seems to be a moral dilemma whether to sponsor a state that’s infamous for its nuclear weapons program and inhumane practices. Even if you decide to go to look for the truth, at all times you will be accompanied by a government-appointed guide. In the end, all you get is false historical accounts and laudatory speeches instead of a real experience. Then why go at all? (Source)

The Jarawa are one of the adivasi indigenous peoples of the Andaman Islands in India. First exposed by tribal rights group Survival International in 2010 and brought to light by an unsettling video uploaded by the Observer last January. With a view to protecting the Jarawa tribes, the Supreme Court on Monday banned all kinds of commercial and tourism activities within a five-kilometre radius around the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
