Brad Shade has been just about everywhere hockey is played. He has ridden the buses in the minors, shared dressing rooms with the legends of the game, closed bars with guys destined for the Hall of Fame, and dropped the gloves with journeymen like himself who'll never get near it. Now that he's retired after fourteen years of bouncing around the league, he's living out of a suitcase and scouting for Los Angeles, where someone in management owes him a favour from his playing days.

Recorded in Rio De Janeiro in 1981, a year after Joyce's seminal 'Feminina' album, 'Magica' showcases Tutty Moreno's outstanding mastery of samba jazz. As 'Feminina' defined the political yet uplifting folk-jazz style of Joyce, 'Magica' can be looked upon as Tutty's coming-of-age showing his mastery of a genre at the relatively young age of 34. 'Magica' is an essential CD for any lovers of samba jazz and for fans of Joyce can be viewed as a companion to 'Feminina' highlighting the rhythmical force that has driven Joyce's music ever since.
Tutty Moreno was born in Bahia in the north of Brazil and has been an important figure in Brazilian popular music from the days of bossa nova through to the jazz influenced fusion of the 70's, 80's and beyond. Tutty has recorded with all the finest Brazilian artists, including Joyce, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethania, Gal Costa, Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil and Joao Donato. He has also worked with many respected jazz musicians such as Ernie Watts, Larry Willis and Claus Ogerman.
Originally released under the name Tutty Moreno & Friends 'Tocando Sentindo Suando (Playing Feeling Sweating)' (FARO 006CD) the album has been out of print for the majority of Far Out's existence and with a follow up commissioned by Far Out for release summer 2007, Far Out decided it was time to make this classic available once again.

Visions of Dawn' is the stunning, previously unreleased project by three Brazilian music legends. Led by the sharp lyrics and gorgeous, expressive voice and guitar of Joyce the trio is completed by the expert musicianship of her close friends Nana Vasconcelos (percussion) and Mauricio Maestro (electric bass, vocals, guitar and producer) who were both crucial in creating this masterpiece. Mauricio, Joyce and Nana became close friends playing together as part of Milton Nascimento's Clube De Esquina scene in Rio and his legendary 'Clube De Edquina' series of albums. These beautiful, hazy and understated recordings, which took place in charming 1970s Paris, offer a unique chance to sit in on the original jamming sessions of tracks that later became Brazilian cult classics.
A founding member of Boca Livre Mauricio produced 'Visions of Dawn' and his electric bass, vocals and floating acoustic guitar lines are crucial to the sessions. Nana Vasconcelos has released more than thirty albums over an incredible forty year career and here displays his unsurpassed Latin jazz percussion skills. Joyce's tender psychedelic vocals result in a dreamy set that's given a strong edge when scatting and letting her notes playfully jump. Stand outs 'Banana' and 'Clareana' later became big Brazilian hits for Joyce. Ending with the orgasmic 'Chegada' this is an album like nothing you've ever heard.
The Paris 1976 project is a legendary 'lost' treasure encapsulating the special freedom and beauty of Joyce, Nana and Mauricio's music.

Whilst most of the 1930s British musical films were 'run-of-the-mill' I guess because of the lack of money, I think parts of this film are quite outstanding.
"Radio Parade of 1935" was an excuse to show British variety / music-hall acts on the big screen - just a slim story about people trying to improve the programme content on the radio. Will Ha's first film, but not a major part.
These two clips consist of the actual start of the film showing staff arriving for work and a clever large scale set piece at the end filmed in experimental Dufaycolour.
I think this relies on two ingredients - dance director Buddy Bradley and the Teddy Joyce Orchestra.
Meantime if you do want to see the whole film with a host of British 1930s acts then the DVD is available from Network / Canal.

Joyce is Brazil's finest samba jazz vocalist -- since her early days when she came to national recognition through the festival scene, she has had a major international career. Her reputation is global and her music speaks volumes - without even understanding the vocals one can be led on a sensual journey.
Hard Bossa is the first album she had made with a view to her fan base in Europe -- it recreates something of the Feminina style which introduced a whole new generation to her work when the album exploded on the jazz dance scene nearly ten years ago. Feminina was the definitive embodiment of Joyce's style and despite her love of the album she has never had the opportunity to get back to that style, mixing jazz and folk strands together in her unique way.
After playing the European circuit throughout the Nineties she has come to realize that there is a need to return to that sound, a need to take that period of her work to a new level. On hearing Hard Bossa for the first time, one is taken back to the heady days of samba jazz in the Seventies and Eighties, of glorious sun-kissed festivals along the beaches of Ipanema, of a young girl armed with just a guitar and an immense vocal talent. The retrospective feel of the album has more to do with the timeless feel Joyce has created rather than any sense of nostalgia, in fact leaving nostalgia aside allows her to produce a vibrant album up there with her best recordings.
As is often the case with Far Out we have empowered the artist, leaving Joyce to make all the decisions on the production and the mixes. With the total freedom to express herself she has come up trumps and delivered a killer album.

Amstrad PCW
The Amstrad PCW series was a range of personal computers produced by British company Amstrad from 1985 to 1998, and also sold under licence in Europe as the "Joyce" by the German electronics company Schneider in the early years of the series' life. When it was launched, the cost of a PCW system was under 25% of the cost of almost all IBM-compatible PC systems in the UK. As a result PCWs became very popular in the home and small office markets, both in the UK and in Europe, and persuaded many technophobes to venture into using computers. However the last two models, introduced in the mid-1990s, were commercial failures, being squeezed out of the market by the falling prices, greater capabilities and wider range of software for IBM-compatible PCs.
In all models, including the last, the monitor's casing included the CPU, RAM, floppy disk drives and power supply for all of the systems' components. All except the last included a printer in the price. Early models used 3-inch floppy disks, while those sold from 1991 onwards used 3½-inch floppies, which became the industry standard around the time the PCW series was launched. A variety of inexpensive products and services were launched to copy 3-inch floppies to the 3½-inch format so that data could be transferred to other machines.

Joyce Moreno (musician)
Joyce Silveira Moreno, commonly known as Joyce (Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈʒojsi]) is a Brazilian singer/songwriter, as well as an accomplished guitarist and arranger. She was born in Rio de Janeiro on 31 January 1948. As of 2009, Joyce started using her full name, Joyce Moreno, for her future releases.
Biography
Joyce premiered in the late 60's, and since then has recorded over 20 solo albums, and appeared in myriad records with such artists as Elis Regina, Toninho Horta, Vinicius de Moraes, and Yoko Kanno. In recent years she has collaborated extensively with João Donato. Much of Joyce's work has been compared to the early boom of the jazz fusion scene in the United States.
She got her start in music by listening to her brother play the guitar, as well as listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and Billie Holiday for inspiration on emotions conveyed in music. Many people came into Joyce's house, and she easily got swept up in the music scene, having had in her childhood great encouragement in music.

Brad Shade has been just about everywhere hockey is played. He has ridden the buses in the minors, shared dressing rooms with the legends of the game, closed bars with guys destined for the Hall of Fame, and dropped the gloves with journeymen like himself who'll never get near it. Recorded in Rio De Janeiro in 1981, a year after Joyce's seminal 'Feminina' album, 'Magica' showcases Tutty Moreno's outstanding mastery of samba jazz. As 'Feminina' defined the political yet uplifting folk-jazz style of Joyce, 'Magica' can be looked upon as Tutty's coming-of-age showing his mastery of a genre at the relatively young age of 34. 'Magica' is an essential CD for any lovers of samba jazz and for fans of Joyce can be viewed as a companion to 'Feminina' highlighting the rhythmical force that has driven Joyce's music ever since.

Visions of Dawn' is the stunning, previously unreleased project by three Brazilian music legends. Led by the sharp lyrics and gorgeous, expressive voice and guitar of Joyce the trio is completed by the expert musicianship of her close friends Nana Vasconcelos (percussion) and Mauricio Maestro (electric bass, vocals, guitar and producer) who were both crucial in creating this masterpiece. Mauricio, Joyce and Nana became close friends playing together as part of Milton Nascimento's Clube De Esquina scene in Rio and his legendary 'Clube De Edquina' series of albums. These beautiful, hazy and understated recordings, which took place in charming 1970s Paris, offer a unique chance to sit in on the original jamming sessions of tracks that later became Brazilian cult classics.
A founding member of Boca Livre Mauricio produced 'Visions of Dawn' and his electric bass, vocals and floating acoustic guitar lines are crucial to the sessions. Nana Vasconcelos has released more than thirty albums over an incredible forty year career and here displays his unsurpassed Latin jazz percussion skills. Joyce's tender psychedelic vocals result in a dreamy set that's given a strong edge when scatting and letting her notes playfully jump. Stand outs 'Banana' and 'Clareana' later became big Brazilian hits for Joyce. Ending with the orgasmic 'Chegada' this is an album like nothing you've ever heard.
The Paris 1976 project is a legendary 'lost' treasure encapsulating the special freedom and beauty of Joyce, Nana and Mauricio's music.

"Radio Parade of 1935" was an excuse to show British variety / music-hall acts on the big screen - just a slim story about people trying to improve the programme content on the radio. Will Ha's first film, but not a major part.
These two clips consist of the actual start of the film showing staff arriving for work and a clever large scale set piece at the end filmed in experimental Dufaycolour.
I think this relies on two ingredients - dance director Buddy Bradley and the Teddy Joyce Orchestra.
Meantime if you do want to see the whole film with a host of British 1930s acts then the DVD is available from Network / Canal.

Joyce is Brazil's finest samba jazz vocalist -- since her early days when she came to national recognition through the festival scene, she has had a major international career. Her reputation is global and her music speaks volumes - without even understanding the vocals one can be led on a sensual journey.
Hard Bossa is the first album she had made with a view to her fan base in Europe -- it recreates something of the Feminina style which introduced a whole new generation to her work when the album exploded on the jazz dance scene nearly ten years ago. Feminina was the definitive embodiment of Joyce's style and despite her love of the album she has never had the opportunity to get back to that style, mixing jazz and folk strands together in her unique way.
After playing the European circuit throughout the Nineties she has come to realize that there is a need to return to that sound, a need to take that period of her work to a new level. On hearing Hard Bossa for the first time, one is taken back to the heady days of samba jazz in the Seventies and Eighties, of glorious sun-kissed festivals along the beaches of Ipanema, of a young girl armed with just a guitar and an immense vocal talent. The retrospective feel of the album has more to do with the timeless feel Joyce has created rather than any sense of nostalgia, in fact leaving nostalgia aside allows her to produce a vibrant album up there with her best recordings.

I also wanted to have the band interacting all the time, to create an album of real live, organic music". Alongside Joyce and Bugge Wesseltoft, Tutty Moreno (drums), Robertinho Silva (percussion), Teco Cardoso (flutes, sax), Nailor Proveta (clarinet, sax) and producer Rodolfo Stroeter (bass), all contributed to the albums make-up.

Debut CD of authentic samba-jazz from Tutty Moreno one of Brazil's leading drummers and Joyce's most constant musical collaborator. Joyce features on vocals on two tracks and guitar on five and this CD features the stunning 'Magica' that is still today a highlight of Joyce's live repertoire.
Recorded in Rio De Janeiro in 1981, a year after Joyce's seminal 'Feminina' album, 'Magica' showcases Tutty Moreno's outstanding mastery of samba jazz. As 'Feminina' defined the political yet uplifting folk-jazz style of Joyce, 'Magica' can be looked upon as Tutty's coming-of-age showing his mastery of a genre at the relatively young age of 34. 'Magica' is an essential CD for any lovers of samba jazz and for fans of Joyce can be viewed as a companion to 'Feminina' highlighting the rhythmical force that has driven Joyce's music ever since.
Tutty Moreno was born in Bahia in the north of Brazil and has been an important figure in Brazilian popular music from the days of bossa nova through to the jazz influenced fusion of the 70's, 80's and beyond. Tudo is Joyce's first studio album in a decade formed entirely of the Brazilian icon's original compositions. Tudo -- meaning 'everything' in Portuguese -- showcases Joyce's remarkable vocals, which gently float over the classic genres of Brazilian music. This charming and captivating record amalgamates the sounds that personify Brazil and celebrates the talent of one of its most passionate voices, described as 'one of the greatest singers of all time' by the legendary Tom Jobim.
With the vibrant and contagious swing of the opening track "Quero Ouvir João", the delicious rhythm of a train crossing the country in "Boiou", the romantic broken hearted sounds of "Sem Poder Dançar" and the delicate harmonies of "Claude et Maurice", Joyce creates an effervescent trip that makes this album unique.
Since the beginning of her musical adventures, in her warm hometown, Rio de Janeiro, Joyce, then only 16 years old, already demonstrated an amazing talent. In 1980 she released her breakthrough album "Feminina", where she portrayed the multiple facets of women, with defying lyrics and infatuating voice that catapulted her to stardom in Brazil and around the world. Since then, she‟s been recording and touring, building an astonishing 44 years career that shows no sign of slowing down and gives us another beautiful work of art with TUDO.
TUDO was recorded in Studios in Rio de Janeiro in March 2012, co-produced by Joyce and her long time life partner Tutty Moreno, here also responsible for the drums and percussion. This project also features Mauricio Maestro on vocal arrangements.
Maestro already collaborated with Joyce on previous Far Out releases like the seminal 1976 album "Visions of Dawn" as well as being the mastermind behind the psychedelic journey that is "Upside Down".
After 15 years and 10 albums released with Far Out Recordings, TUDO sees Joyce bringing a fresh breeze to the music scene once again with the jazzy elegance of her unparalleled voice.

Brad Shade has been just about everywhere hockey is played. He has ridden the buses in the minors, shared dressing rooms with the legends of the game, closed bars with guys destined for the Hall of Fame, and dropped the gloves with journeymen like himself who'll never get near it. Now that he's retired after fourteen years of bouncing around the league, he's living out of a suitcase and scouting for Los Angeles, where someone in management owes him a favour from his playing days.
But when the brutally murdered body of coaching legend Red Hanratty turns up in the parking lot after an old-timers charity game, Shade's job of scouting the local phenomenon starts to overlap with investigating the killing of the kid's grizzled old coach.

Visions of Dawn' is the stunning, previously unreleased project by three Brazilian music legends. Led by the sharp lyrics and gorgeous, expressive voice and guitar of Joyce the trio is completed by the expert musicianship of her close friends Nana Vasconcelos (percussion) and Mauricio Maestro (electric bass, vocals, guitar and producer) who were both crucial in creating this masterpiece. Mauricio, Joyce and Nana became close friends playing together as part of Milton Nascimento's Clube De Esquina scene in Rio and his legendary 'Clube De Edquina' series of albums. These beautiful, hazy and understated recordings, which took place in charming 1970s Paris, offer a unique chance to sit in on the original jamming sessions of tracks that later became Brazilian cult classics.
A founding member of Boca Livre Mauricio produced 'Visions of Dawn' and his electric bass, vocals and floating acoustic guitar lines are crucial to the sessions. Nana Vasconcelos has released more than thirty albums over an incredible forty year career and here displays his unsurpassed Latin jazz percussion skills. Joyce's tender psychedelic vocals result in a dreamy set that's given a strong edge when scatting and letting her notes playfully jump. Stand outs 'Banana' and 'Clareana' later became big Brazilian hits for Joyce. Ending with the orgasmic 'Chegada' this is an album like nothing you've ever heard.
The Paris 1976 project is a legendary 'lost' treasure encapsulating the special freedom and beauty of Joyce, Nana and Mauricio's music.

Whilst most of the 1930s British musical films were 'run-of-the-mill' I guess because of the lack of money, I think parts of this film are quite outstanding.
"Radio Parade of 1935" was an excuse to show British variety / music-hall acts on the big screen - just a slim story about people trying to improve the programme content on the radio. Will Ha's first film, but not a major part.
These two clips consist of the actual start of the film showing staff arriving for work and a clever large scale set piece at the end filmed in experimental Dufaycolour.

Joyce is Brazil's finest samba jazz vocalist -- since her early days when she came to national recognition through the festival scene, she has had a major international career. Her reputation is global and her music speaks volumes - without even understanding the vocals one can be led on a sensual journey.
Hard Bossa is the first album she had made with a view to her fan base in Europe -- it recreates something of the Feminina style which introduced a whole new generation to her work when the album exploded on the jazz dance scene nearly ten years ago. Feminina was the definitive embodiment of Joyce's style and despite her love of the album she has never had the opportunity to get back to that style, mixing jazz and folk strands together in her unique way.
After playing the European circuit throughout the Nineties she has come to realize that there is a need to return to that sound, a need to take that period of her work to a new level. On hearing Hard Bossa for the first time, one is taken back to the heady days of samba jazz in the Seventies and Eighties, of glorious sun-kissed festivals along the beaches of Ipanema, of a young girl armed with just a guitar and an immense vocal talent. The retrospective feel of the album has more to do with the timeless feel Joyce has created rather than any sense of nostalgia, in fact leaving nostalgia aside allows her to produce a vibrant album up there with her best recordings.
As is often the case with Far Out we have empowered the artist, leaving Joyce to make all the decisions on the production and the mixes. With the total freedom to express herself she has come up trumps and delivered a killer album.

This is a major achievement for Joyce and recognition of her outstanding contribution to Brazilian music. Joyce has been recording for over three decades and has become one of Brasilian Music's most respected musicians both below and above the equator.
Joyce explains the vibe of the album: "I wanted to try something different, different grooves, different subjects, and different sounds. I spoke as a woman for more than 3 decades -- now I want to be more involved in the musical aspects of my craft and rather than write about my own feelings talk about the world around me. I also wanted to have the band interacting all the time, to create an album of real live, organic music". Alongside Joyce and Bugge Wesseltoft, Tutty Moreno (drums), Robertinho Silva (percussion), Teco Cardoso (flutes, sax), Nailor Proveta (clarinet, sax) and producer Rodolfo Stroeter (bass), all contributed to the albums make-up.

Tutty Moreno was born in Bahia in the north of Brazil and has been an important figure in Brazilian popular music from the days of bossa nova through to the jazz influenced fusion of the 70's, 80's and beyond. Tutty has recorded with all the finest Brazilian artists, including Joyce, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethania, Gal Costa, Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil and Joao Donato. He has also worked with many respected jazz musicians such as Ernie Watts, Larry Willis and Claus Ogerman.
Originally released under the name Tutty Moreno & Friends 'Tocando Sentindo Suando (Playing Feeling Sweating)' (FARO 006CD) the album has been out of print for the majority of Far Out's existence and with a follow up commissioned by Far Out for release summer 2007, Far Out decided it was time to make this classic available once again.
