Each time I see James Blake and his band perform, I feel the extreme rush of hearing something for the very first time. The sound is sharp and visceral; it oddly vibrates the hair on my arms and, at moments of extreme bass, gets me feeling claustrophobic before the inevitable release when Blake sings. It's hopeful, mournful, always thoughtful.
These days, Blake seems to be in love, and the songs from his new album Overgrown reflect that emotional dance. As with love, the music isn't simple, isn't predictable and isn't always easy to comprehend, but it's intense and riveting. This concert took place on a Sunday night at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., and the relatively quiet crowd could have been mistaken for uncaring or laid-back. But as I walked around the room catching the faces of so many, it was clearly an intensely attentive audience.
On keyboards and voice, Blake performs alongside an innovative and intriguing drummer in Ben Assiter, as well as Rob McAndrews on keyboards, guitars that don't always sound like guitars, and the all-encompassing bass sound he generates using bass pedals — meant for the feet but played with his hands. This is 90 minutes of some of the most breathtaking music I've heard and seen all year. I'm so glad we captured the moment. --BOB BOILEN

You Need To Hear This has the official video for the new single "Life Round Here", a collaboration between James Blake and Chance The Rapper.
The video, shot entirely in black and white, tracks Blake and Chance as they cruise in a lowrider through an eerie forest inhabited by stallions and Somalian pirates.
"I love juxtapositions," says the video's award-winning director Nabil, "so I thought I'd bring an old school lowrider to the countryside in England, and bring the two together in a way that makes people question things."

James Riley Blake (born December 28, 1979) is an American professional tennis player. Blake is known for his speed and powerful, flat forehand. As of April 2012, Blake is ranked World No. 74 among active male players with 24 career finals appearances (10–14 record), whilst his career-high singles ranking is World No. 4. His career highlights include reaching the final of the 2006 Tennis Masters Cup, the semifinals of the Beijing Olympics and the quarterfinals of the Australian Open (2008) and US Open (2005, 2006). His two titles for the United States at the Hopman Cup are an event record. Blake was a key performer for the United States 2007 Davis Cup championship team, going 2–0 in the championship tie vs. Russia at second singles. In 2005, Blake was presented with the Comeback Player of the Year award for his remarkable return to the tour. Later, in 2008, Blake was awarded another honor by the ATP where he was named the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year. On July 3, 2007, Blake's autobiography Breaking Back: How I Lost Everything and Won Back My Life, which discussed his comeback after his unlucky 2004 season, was released and debuted at No. 22 on the New York Times Best Seller list. He co-wrote this book with Andrew Friedman.

Joni Mitchell, CC (born Roberta Joan Anderson; November 7, 1943) is a Canadian musician, singer songwriter, and painter. Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in Saskatchewan and Western Canada and then busking in the streets and dives of Toronto. In 1965 she moved to the United States and, touring constantly, began to be recognized when her original songs ("Urge for Going," "Chelsea Morning," "Both Sides, Now," "The Circle Game") were covered by notable folk singers, allowing her to sign with Reprise Records and record her own debut album in 1968. Settling in Southern California, Mitchell and her popular songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Woodstock" helped define an era and a generation. Her more starkly personal 1971 recording Blue has been called one of the best albums ever made. Musically restless, Mitchell switched labels and began moving toward jazz rhythms by way of lush pop textures on 1974's Court and Spark, her best-selling LP, featuring her radio hits "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris."

Each time I see James Blake and his band perform, I feel the extreme rush of hearing something for the very first time. The sound is sharp and visceral; it oddly vibrates the hair on my arms and, at moments of extreme bass, gets me feeling claustrophobic before the inevitable release when Blake sings. It's hopeful, mournful, always thoughtful. These days, Blake seems to be in love, and the songs from his new album Overgrown reflect that emotional dance. As with love, the music isn't simple, isn't predictable and isn't always easy to comprehend, but it's intense and riveting. Each time I see James Blake and his band perform, I feel the extreme rush of hearing something for the very first time. The sound is sharp and visceral; it oddly vibrates the hair on my arms and, at moments of extreme bass, gets me feeling claustrophobic before the inevitable release when Blake sings. It's hopeful, mournful, always thoughtful.
These days, Blake seems to be in love, and the songs from his new album Overgrown reflect that emotional dance. As with love, the music isn't simple, isn't predictable and isn't always easy to comprehend, but it's intense and riveting. This concert took place on a Sunday night at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., and the relatively quiet crowd could have been mistaken for uncaring or laid-back. But as I walked around the room catching the faces of so many, it was clearly an intensely attentive audience.
On keyboards and voice, Blake performs alongside an innovative and intriguing drummer in Ben Assiter, as well as Rob McAndrews on keyboards, guitars that don't always sound like guitars, and the all-encompassing bass sound he generates using bass pedals — meant for the feet but played with his hands. This is 90 minutes of some of the most breathtaking music I've heard and seen all year. I'm so glad we captured the moment. --BOB BOILEN

The video, shot entirely in black and white, tracks Blake and Chance as they cruise in a lowrider through an eerie forest inhabited by stallions and Somalian pirates.
"I love juxtapositions," says the video's award-winning director Nabil, "so I thought I'd bring an old school lowrider to the countryside in England, and bring the two together in a way that makes people question things."

Blake said he suffered cuts and bruises from the Wednesday incident, when detectives in Manhattan mistook him for a suspect in an identity theft ring. The video shows the officer, James Frascatore, accost Blake as he leans against a wall outside the Grand Hyatt in midtown. Frascatore can be seen slamming Blake to the ground to cuff him.”

Interview: James Blake Fan Q&A; At Music Feeds Studio
James Blake recently dropped into Music Feeds Studio during his 2-stop mini Australian tour in the lead-up to the release of his second album, Overgrown, released last Friday, 8th April. After fielding questions from Feeds, the second part of the interview was turned over to Music Feeds' viewer, who submitted a wide range of inquires for popular English musician. Questions ranged from whether Blake felt his fan base was split between his instrumental and vocal work, to how the young songwriter deals with fan adulation. -

London producer James Blake sails into Sound Of 2011's 2nd spot at the forefront of the emerging post-dubstep sub genre of UK club music. The Deptford based artist started singing and studying piano at the age of six, a tutorage which eventually led to Blake's attendance of Goldsmiths University to study Popular Music. Early listening came in the form of his parent's classical and jazz collections, in addition to US Soul and R 'n' B from the likes of Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo and Sly & The Family Stone. Rising star of the UK electronic scene James Blake is once again preparing to blow many, many minds as he gears up to release album number 2 Overgrown this April. Prior to its release, Blake made a cheeky promo stop off Down Under where he caught up with Music Feeds for a live-streamed interview in the studio.
One of the most buzzworthy artists around, Blake no doubt had a lot to talk about. The first part of the interview tackles much of the creative process. Overgrown brought collaborations with not only Brian Eno on Digital Lion but also the legendary RZA on Take A Fall For Me. Blake explains how the tracks came to life and the process of fusing creative abilities.
The sophomore release saw a lot more pressure placed on the young musicians shoulders after impressing even the harshest judges with his debut. Blake explains how this affected the final product of the album as well as all the valuable lessons he learnt along the way.

Soon after the producer joined Mount Kimbie as the third member of their live show.
Blake claims he was influenced to add more of his own vocal to his work by Joni Mitchell's Blue and Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago, and this style has become increasingly evident in subsequent releases on respected Belgian label R&S;. Recent single, a cover of Feist's Limit To Your Love, would seem to be his most refined to date. This was singled out by Radio 1's Zane Lowe in his "Hottest Record in the World" segment, which only adds to growing anticipation for the producer's self-titled debut, set for release on Atlas/A&M; in early February.
