How many of you have pulled up to a stop sign or you were looking to cross the street only to have a motor vehicle blow right past the sign...never slowing or even stopping. Has this happened to you? Of course it has. Stop right there and I will be back to talk about that octagon shaped, red background, white border with white letters that reads stop. Welcome back guys and thanks for sticking around. Now when drivers disobey traffic signs, we all know it poses a big safety problem...but nothing bothers me more than when someone blatantly disobeys a stop sign. Now a stop sign is a regulatory sign which means that it is intended to instruct drivers on what they must do. Failing to do so could have tragic consequences. Like this....this...or even this one where one of the drivers actually lost their life. What’s consistent in these photos is that all of the accidents occurred because one of the drivers if not both failed to obey the sign. Now disobeying a stop sign is a serious violation in the state of New York. Believe it or not, if you plead guilty or are convicted of failing to stop at a stop sign...you could be facing: 3 Points on Your License and fine of over $100 and even 15 Days in Jail for your first offense. If it happens a second time within 18 months of your first conviction, you will face the same penalties as the first time, but the fine could be doubled and you face 45 days in jail. And god forbid you get caught a third time within 18 months of your first conviction, you will be facing a fine of up to $450 and you could go to jail for up to 90 days. So think about that the next time you are approaching a stop sign and stop! You are required by law to come to a complete stop...not just putting your foot on the brake and slowly roll through. Now one of the popular excuses I get is that they say that they are not from around here. Hey it doesn’t matter where you are from...stop signs are universal...so I will leave you with a collection of stop signs from around the world and you tell me in the comments below if you were visiting one of these countries...would you have a problem recognizing the sign and actually stopping.
