Ayn Rand (born Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum; February 2 [O.S. January 20] 1905 -- March 6, 1982) was a Russian-American novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter. She is known for her two best-selling novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism. Born and educated in Russia, Rand moved to the United States in 1926. She worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood and had a play produced on Broadway in 1935--1936. After two early novels that were initially less successful, she achieved fame with her 1943 novel The Fountainhead.
In 1957, she published her best-known work, the novel Atlas Shrugged. Afterward she turned to nonfiction to promote her philosophy, publishing her own magazines and releasing several collections of essays until her death in 1982. Rand advocated reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge and rejected faith and religion. She supported rational and ethical egoism, and rejected ethical altruism. In politics, she condemned the initiation of force as immoral and opposed collectivism and statism as well as anarchism, instead supporting a minarchist limited government and laissez-faire capitalism, which she believed was the only social system that protected individual rights. In art, Rand promoted romantic realism. She was sharply critical of most philosophers and philosophical traditions known to her, except for some Aristotelians and classical liberals.
Rand's fiction was poorly received by many literary critics, and academia generally ignored or rejected her philosophy. The Objectivist movement attempts to spread her ideas, both to the public and in academic settings. She has been a significant influence among libertarians and American conservatives.

Drug liberalization is the process of eliminating or reducing drug prohibition laws. Variations of drug liberalization (also spelled liberalisation) include drug relegalization, drug legalization, and drug decriminalization. The reasons given for this include the failure of current policies, the revenue to be raised from taxing drugs, the right of adults to live their life without interference from the government and the reduction in crime it is claimed will come with liberalization.

http://www.leap.cc
In its history, America has experienced two major periods of drug prohibition. This first was the Federal alcohol prohibition from 1920-1933. The second is the current war on drugs, which began in 1971.
According to Prof. Angela Dills, during these periods of prohibition in America, both homicide rates and police enforcement costs increased. This makes sense, as prohibitions never actually eliminate use. Rather, prohibitions convert peaceful and legal markets into black markets. In black markets, when disputes arise over sales territory, product quality, or money, the government legal system is not available. This forces drug dealers to resolve disputes on their own, which often leads to violence.
The violence of black markets, along with the enforcement of drug policy, attracts the attention of law enforcement. Law enforcement is costly, and the time spent enforcing drug laws could have been spent preventing other crimes like murder, theft, and rape. Drug prohibition not only generates more violence and increases the cost of law enforcement; it also distracts law enforcement and puts citizens at greater risk of crime.

http://www.democracynow.org - We look at the growing movement for drug decriminalization that is moving ahead in the United States and being amplified by former heads of state from around the around. On Monday, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said he would sign a bill that would make Philadelphia the largest city in the country to decriminalize marijuana possession. Just two weeks ago, the City Council in Santa Fe voted to decriminalize marijuana. Earlier this year, District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray signed a bill to decriminalize possession of up to an ounce of marijuana in the U.S. capital. Ballot initiatives on legalization of marijuana will go before voters in Oregon, Florida and Alaska in November. This comes two years after voter initiatives in Colorado and Washington state legalized recreational marijuana. Meanwhile, a group of former presidents and United Nations leaders gathered in New York Tuesday to call for an end to the criminalization and incarceration of drug users. Known as the Global Commission on Drug Policy, the panel includes the former presidents of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Poland, Portugal and Switzerland. The commission first made headlines in 2011 when it declared the war on drugs to be a failure. We are joined by two guests: Michel Kazatchkine, a member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy and the United Nations' special envoy on HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia; and Ethan Nadelmann, founder and executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance.

wn.com/As Pot Decriminalization Advances In U.S., Former World Leaders Call For End To Failed War On Drugs
http://www.democracynow.org - We look at the growing movement for drug decriminalization that is moving ahead in the United States and being amplified by former heads of state from around the around.

Supporters of the measure have also said it would keep a large number of young people from being imprisoned for a minor offense and having a criminal record that could harm their future employment and school scholarship opportunities.

" I was 11 years old. I had just walked into my last class of the day which I would later come to know as the most fun because it was in the school gym and where else can you run around and feel human. There was something about being a small guy in a big school that made it to where everyday was a chance to come out of my shell and meet someone new. It was in this exact gym class that I would brush against my life's purpose. As I sang a little tune to the walls others could not help but notice something they enjoyed about it and I, could not hide my shy face from being recognized as the source of the sound nor could I hide the exalting joy in my heart at what my music had done. I had found proof that I existed and that we existed beyond our skin."
So, my name is Mahlon Jackson, I've been playing and writing music my entire 22 years of life; or at the very least hearing and loving it. I play by ear which didn't seem so special to me early on other than the fact it felt nice to hear a tune and lyrics and be able to express them like I would with speaking. I figured other people were just too scared to do the same thing and I didn't really know why, but now, I can totally understand why.
Firstly, for me, music has literally been the thing to save my life from many misguided decisions and I imagine it always will be I simply can't separate the two in my head even if I dare tried. My heart sings to me so I can't and don't want to escape that, especially in a world that talks "at" me, telling me to please see, hear, do, and be something i'm not only to later on tell me they cannot relate to me because i'm not being myself.
I'm raising money to fund a musical journey, documentation, and creative project of what it's like to live in a society where a basic natural right to rhythm and vibration has been hijacked and hoodwinked by the corporatization of both people and the music they create. This will allow me to build a platform, through music and video, for an awareness of the struggles of artistry when your competing with a plethora of corporations for your right to be heard and expressed as, with, and by your art and a natural inclination to connect with people as who, where, and when they are.
These days I'm a bartender in Atlanta, with an awesome set of family and friends who keep life full of new and exciting things to share. All of our money however goes to basic living expenses. So this money will go towards owning a decent camera, and microphone for better quality art. It will also go towards a guitar that's not broken, lighting, and gas to get to and from shooting locations and maybe even be able to pay for entry into some showcases and platforms to be seen.
The reason this is so important to me is because it emotionally kills me to submit to the psychopathic destruction of passionate and enlivened music, just for personal profit. In so many ways I owe my lyrics and visions to everyday people like me who inspire me. I just think it's an incredible honor to be funded by the very people that inspire me. What better way to inspire them back than to involve them and invite them in my heart.
I will need funds by the summer because I would Love, Love, Love, to travel the U.S. and document my journey.
As well as get good music in circulation as soon as possible.
I'm thankful to even watch how this whole thing unfolds and I'm thankful there's even a way to ask for support.
Of course, it's exciting to hope to own everything I need to bring music to a higher state of life in the world but to have it is indescribable! I've never been more determined to do anything and I cant do it alone nor do I want to in any way. it's just music is not meant to be lonely.

After last week’s Supreme Court decision to legalize marijuana for recreational use for one advocacy group in Mexico, public pressure has prompted the country’s Interior Minister to announce a three-stage national public debate over decriminalization. The first will be held with specialists, scientists and academics; the second with the civil society on health impacts; and the third in legislative chambers. Many proponents of legalization argue that the criminalization of marijuana violates individual rights and has also fostered rampant corruption and violence in Mexico’s militarized anti-drug war. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City for teleSUR.

Testimony during 10/20/2015 California Assembly Committee on Public Safety, Human Trafficking: Identifying the scope of the problem and potential solutions. Maxine Doogan expert and President of the Erotic Service Providers Legal Education and Research Project and Jerald Mosley retired Deputy Attorney General tackle a common question posed by assembly members: won't decriminalization cause an increase in the abuse of minors? AS IF CRIMINALIZATION PREVENTS ABUSE IT DOES NOT. neither does existing abuse justify damaging and abusing countless other people in the name of saving minors. Maxine Doogan makes an excellent point- thousands of rape kits go untested while police spend resources arresting consensual adult providers. There is no social safety net for victims yet the gov wants to pour more funding millions in fact- into law enforcement operations to arrest more (adults engaging in adult prostitution)? Yep. The California state assembly convened to discuss the scope of human trafficking and potential solutions. Members of ESPLERP participated on a panel and others gave public statements as part of the hearing. October 10, 2015 marks the two-year anniversary of Michael L. Johnson’s arrest. Since that time, 23-year old Michael has faced stigmatizing media coverage, a grueling trial, and was sentenced to a horrific 30 1/2 years in prison under HIV criminalization laws in Missouri.
The prosecution and incarceration of Michael Johnson highlighted many of the ways in which policing, racist criminal justice practices, and homophobia intersect – and led to a beautiful statement of love and support from 116 Black gay men, as well as several strategic discussions about advancing solidarity frames between the HIV decriminalization movement and #BlackLivesMatter at the historic first-ever Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) National Convening that occurred in Cleveland, Ohio on July 22-24.
Join Counter Narrative Project, Black Youth Project (BYP100), HIV Prevention Justice Alliance, and Positive Women’s Network – USA for a webinar to recommit to our fight for justice for Michael Johnson; an end to racist, homophobic, and HIV-stigma-driven laws and policing practices; and action to support grassroots organizing led by Black gay men.
When: Wednesday, October 14th, 3-4:30pm ET/2-3:30pm CT/1-2:30pm MT/12-1:30pm PT
Our fierce panelists include:
Diane Burkholder - Cofounder, One Struggle KC

October 1, 2014 by City of Philadelphia
Mayor Michael A. Nutter signed City Council legislation to decriminalize the possession and use of 30 grams or less of marijuana in the City of Philadelphia, and an executive order which directs the implementation of the law and coordinates supporting public services, including expungement, addiction treatment, educational programming and an informational outreach campaign.
“In addition to signing this ordinance, which does not legalize marijuana but makes the penalties commensurate with the violation, I am proud to announce that the City of Philadelphia is launching an outreach campaign to educate residents about the impact and consequences of marijuana use and how they can get help to overcome the habit,” said Mayor Nutter. “This approach is consistent with President Obama’s 2014 National Drug Control Strategy Report, which represents a national shift toward policies that emphasize prevention, treatment and recovery. I do not condone marijuana use, it is illegal. But the punishment needs to be proportionate to the crime, and these are common sense changes that will have a positive impact on many Philadelphians.”
While the use and possession of any amount of marijuana remains illegal, the penalties have been altered to eliminate arrests for non-violent offenders. For possession, an individual will receive a Notice of Violation and $25 fine. For public use, an individual will receive a Notice of Violation and $100 fine, or up to nine hours of community service. These changes will be effective beginning Monday, October 20, 2014.
Individuals will no longer be arrested for use and possession of small amounts of marijuana (30 grams or less), nor will they receive a criminal record for such use or possession. When an individual is stopped for use or possession, police officers will confiscate the marijuana and provide it to the Philadelphia Police Department Forensics Unit for possible testing of substances. Finally, parents and guardians can be held liable for violations of their minor children.
Mayor Nutter added, “I would like to thank Councilman Kenney for his leadership on this issue, all my colleagues in City Council, Philadelphia Municipal Court President Judge Neifield and her colleagues at the Courts, District Attorney Williams, Police Commissioner Ramsey, Superintendent Dr. Hite and all the other individuals who worked with my office on this important initiative. It is as a result of our common purpose to best serve the citizens of Philadelphia that we were able to work collaboratively on such an important matter.”
The Executive Order signed by Mayor Nutter authorizes the launch of a public outreach campaign to educate Philadelphians regarding the new regulations through public services announcements (PSAs) and the distribution of palm cards at City facilities such as Health Centers, Police Districts, and The Mayor’s Office of Reintegration Services (R.I.S.E.). The palm cards and PSAs will reinforce that marijuana use and possession is still illegal, provide information on addiction treatment services, and remind individuals that they can still be arrested for distributing marijuana, failing to provide accurate information to the police if stopped, driving under the influence of marijuana or possessing more than 30 grams of marijuana.

What happened to the cannabis decriminalization bill that overwhelmingly passed the house with more than 80% of NH state reps voting for it? In an embarrassing display of ignorance, watch as multiple NH senators spout off various prohibitionist lies and nonsense in this hearing that came at the end of a 12-hour day for liberty activists at the state house. Despite initially having enough votes to pass the measure, prohibitionist senator Carson moves to strip some more from the already-crippled bill. This ultimately kills it, for political reasons.(Technically it's "tabled" until 2016.)
The good news is this is the first time the NH senate has ever had a floor discussion on the issue (the house has passed decrim six times in eight years), as ignorant as much of it was, it's a step in the right direction. The next step is to target the bad senators for either education or elimination in 2016's election. More detail on what happened below the video, from someone who was with me witnessing the debacle.

wn.com/First Ever Nh Senate Full Hearing On Cannabis Decriminalization

Why Prostitution Should be Decriminalize ?
A prostitute has a 45 percent to 75 percent chance of experiencing workplace violence at some point, according to recent research indicates, and a 32 percent to 55 percent likelihood that she or he was victimized the past year. Worker safety, along with concerns about exploitation and objectification, are behind much of the continued support for keeping prostitution illegal.
But there’s a movement afoot to challenge conventional wisdom about prohibition. Or, rather, to incorporate what we already know about black markets into our thinking about sex workers and their rights.
As with the drug trade, much of the violence associated with sex work is exacerbated by its illegality. Violent people are more likely to prey on sex workers, confident that they won’t be reported to police.
