SAN FRANCISCO –– The WGC-Cadillac Match Play hasn’t been overly kind to world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who made exits in the first and second rounds, respectively, the past two years. So if there was a term to describe his opening-round effort late Wednesday afternoon against Jason Dufner at TPC Harding Park, it would be this: work

Rory McIlroy Wins 2015 WGC Cadillac Match Play - Last Man Standing.
San Francisco (AFP) - World number one Rory McIlroy added the WGC World Match Play Championship to his four majors with a 4&2 victory over US journeyman Gary Woodland in the final.
Northern Irishman McIlroy, who turns 26 on Monday, was playing in his second WGC Match Play final, having lost to Hunter Mahan in the 2012 championship contest.
Rory McIlroy was a perfect 7-0 in the first year of the event's new format featuring three rounds of pool play, followed by knockout rounds.
But he had to rally for several of those victories -- including a comeback from 2-down with two to play to fend off elimination on Friday -- and late rallies in both the quarter- and semi-finals.
"I'm really proud of myself with how I showed a lot of character early on with coming back from deficits," said McIlroy, who became the first number one seed to win the tournament since Tiger Woods in 2008.
"I played really solid golf. My second WGC and first win in the States this year. I couldn't be happier."
Danny Willett defeated Jim Furyk 3&2 to win the consolation match.
Rory McIlroy took control early against Woodland, notching four birdies in a row from the fourth hole to take a commanding lead.
Woodland took the 11th and 12th, but missed a four-footer at 13 that would have gotten him within 1-down.
"My putt drops on 13 and it's a different ball game," Woodland said.
"But I missed that one. And he was like a shark. Smelled blood, and it was game over quickly."
Woodland bogeyed the 14th to slide 3-down. He conceded the match on 16 after missing a birdie chip.
It was a markedly easier victory than the grandstand finish McIlroy needed to get past Furyk 1-up in the semi-finals at Harding Park.
Rory McIlroy was trailing by one hole at the 16th after a roller-coaster of a match when he hit his tee-shot to within four feet for birdie at the par-three 17th.
He then drained a 44-foot eagle putt at the last to stun the veteran American.
Woodland also hit back to defeat England's Willett 3&2 in a semi-final no-one expected.
Rory McIlroy, who claimed his second tournament win of the year after the Dubai Desert Classic in late January, admitted after his semi-final win that he could do without the late-match dramatics.
"I wish I didn't have to finish like that all the time," he said.
- Gruelling quarter-final win -
Rory McIlroy needed 22 holes, and a Sunday morning finish, to beat England's Paul Casey in the quarter-finals.
He finished off the match with a birdie at the par-five first hole.
Minutes later, McIlroy again birdied the opening hole, but saw Furyk hole from 15 feet for a half, before a par on the third was enough for McIlroy to take the lead in the semi-final.
That was shortlived as McIlroy bogeyed the fourth, but the four-time major winner reclaimed the lead thanks to a birdie on the fifth and looked like moving further ahead when he chipped in from short of the green on the seventh.
However, Furyk followed McIlroy in from 20 feet there and also birdied the eighth, while a par was good enough to move one up at the ninth as McIlroy failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker.
Rory McIlroy won the 11th and 12th to go back ahead, but he could not hold on to his lead once again as Furyk took the 13th and 15th to edge into the lead.
The American had victory in his sights only for McIlroy to snatch it away from him with two outstanding holes of golf.

(HD) Dustin Johnson wins 2015 WGC Cadillac Championship
J.B. Holmes ran out of putter early in a historic Blue Monster Sunday collapse. Bubba Watson passed Holmes on the leaderboard before running out of precision.
That left this year’s World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship for Dustin Johnson, who retained just enough putter, precision, gumption and drive to win by one stroke over Holmes and two over Watson with a final-round 3-under-par 69 and 9-under 279 total.
Though Johnson has been a consistent PGA Tour winner — this is his eighth consecutive season with a victory — it’s his first since taking several months off away from the game last year in what might or might not have been a substance-abuse suspension and first since becoming a father. Johnson and fiancée Paulina Gretzky became parents in January.
“First as a dad, definitely, is the most special,” Johnson said. “You know, Paulina and Tatum were waiting for me when I got done. That was the best part of the day for sure.”
The best part of the day for spectators came right before that, the tee shots on the perilous par-4 No. 18 with Johnson up one shot on Holmes. Two of the tour’s and the tournament’s biggest hitters attacked the maw of the Blue Monster with breathtaking violence and power.
Needing to birdie the hole, Holmes unsurprisingly blasted a drive that went 311 yards and stayed on the narrow fairway. Spectators near the 18th tee barely had calmed their breathing when Johnson slammed a 317-yard drive that sent electric ripples through the crowd as it sizzled past on its way to the right side of the fairway.
Johnson, who like many found himself driving well right the first three days to avoid the water on the left, said, “He hit it in the fairway and then I knew I need to hit this ball in the fairway. I did pull it a hair, but I absolutely smashed it.”
Johnson put his second shot in the rough near the back of the green. Holmes’ birdie putt from 40 feet rolled 39 feet. Johnson safely two-putted for the win.

McIlroy falls back as Kisner streaks ahead
Rory McIlroy struggled to a level-par 72 Friday in the second round of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai to fall 10 shots behind leader Kevin Kisner.
The world number three wasn't the only superstar to find scoring difficult as the wind got up at the 7,200-yard par-72 Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai.
McIlroy's playing partners and fellow top-10 ranked players Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler carded 72 and 71 respectively.
"I didn't play very well today," said the Northern Irishman. "I was just a bit flat out there. So, yeah, left myself a lot to do over the weekend but hopefully I can shoot a couple of good scores."
The scoreboard had been dominated by rounds in the 60s on Thursday but only 16 of the elite 78-man field managed to crack 70 on the second day.
"I've shot 63 around here before," said McIlroy, who admitted he still was not 100 percent after a bout of food poisoning earlier in the week.
"No reason why I can't go out and shoot a score like that over the weekend and get myself somewhat back in the tournament."
World number two and double major winner Jordan Spieth showed he was human in a year when he almost conquered all with three consecutive bogeys from the 11th.
It was his second worst scoring run of 2015 after going bogey-bogey-double bogey on his first three holes in the PGA Tour's Barclays Championship way back in August.
"I hit some shots that I was very shocked with today," said Spieth. "I felt like I was very lazy in my routine and it bit me with three unforced errors in a row on the back nine there."
A birdie four at the 18th gave some cheer to the 22-year-old who finished with a level-par 72 to stay at four-under for the tournament and in a 10-man tie for 27th beside McIlroy.
Defending champion and world number four Bubba Watson lost ground with a 73, bogeying the 18th after finding the greenside lake and is a shot further back at three-under.
- 'Beyond expectations' -
Kisner followed up his opening day 64 with a 66 to lie 14 under par, remarkable scoring for the 31-year-old American who didn't practise at all before Thursday because of a bad back. It surprised even himself.
"It's beyond my expectations," Kisner said. "I had no expectations coming in. So it's been good. I'm making a lot of putts and that's fun."
America-based Scotsman Russell Knox stands alone in second place on 12 under par after a best-of-the-day 65 in his first World Golf Championships event.
Overnight leader Branden Grace found it hard to follow his stunning opening 63, managing only a 71 to fall four shots behind Kisner at 10 under par.
"It was tough," said the South African. "Most of these holes are tree-lined, so it's tough to really trust the wind."
Local hero Li Haotong continued to thrill his legions of Chinese fans with a three-under 69 and a share of fourth place at nine-under for the tournament level with American Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed.
"It's a pretty good start on the first five holes to make three birdies," said the 20-year-old Li, who got off to a flyer and at one stage on Friday was atop the leaderboard.
"It was very cool, a lot of fun to see my name up there on the leaderboards around the course. I missed some chances, but last hole was a very important up-and-down for bogey."

Rory McIlroy wins WGC Match Play by beating Gary Woodland
Rory McIlroy won his first WGC Match Play title with a 4&2 victory over America's Gary Woodland.
The world number one shook off a nervy start with the putter to move clear with a string of birdies on the front nine.
Woodland rallied on the inward half, but missed a critical short putt to win the 13th and cut the gap to one hole.
The pressure on McIlroy was released and the Northern Irishman sealed the title.
There was an edginess to both men early on in the round, as McIlroy putted poorly, while Woodland's driving accuracy deserted him
The third hole epitomised the scrappy early play. First, Woodland suffered a fate familiar to all amateur golfers when, having already hooked his drive, he then hit a tree with his approach and watched the ball trickle back to his feet.
Yet McIlroy then three-putted and the hole was halved in bogey fives.
McIlroy, who turns 26 on Monday, soon tidied up his play and pulled away with four holes in succession to go to the turn four up.
However, Woodland steadied at the start of the back nine and wins on 11 and 12 cut the deficit to two, but he passed up a glorious chance on the 13th to heap pressure on McIlroy, missing from five feet.
The Northern Irishman took immediate advantage, winning the 14th to return to three up, and closed out the match 4&2 on the 16th green.
Earlier in the day, McIlroy won the final two holes with stunning play to end Jim Furyk's dogged challenge in the semi-final.
McIlroy - who needed extra holes to beat both Billy Horschel and Paul Casey in earlier rounds - was one hole down to Furyk on the 17th tee, but struck a pinpoint iron to seven feet and holed for a two to go all-square.
He then ran in a huge putt across the 18th green for eagle to seal his final berth.
In the consolation match, England's Danny Willett beat Furyk 3&2 to secure third prize in the tournament.

Justin Rose and Jim Furyk Share 54-Hole Lead At WGC-Bridgestone
Justin Rose went 30 straight holes without making a birdie. He made up for it in a big way Saturday at the Bridgestone Invitational with a 7-under 63 that gave him a share of the lead with Jim Furyk going into the final round.
The last bunch of birdies made for a quick change on the leaderboard. Rose was four shots behind with four holes to play when he made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 15th, hit wedge into 3 feet for birdie on the par-5 16th and closed out his best round ever at Firestone with a 40-foot birdie on the 18th.
Furyk finished with six straight pars, and he had to work for the last one. His tee shot landed in a sand-filled divot, and he punched it short of the green in the rough and then chipped long onto the fringe behind the flag. But he rolled in that 12-foot putt for par and a 69 to join Rose at 9-under 201.
They were two shots ahead of Shane Lowry of Ireland, who had a 67.
Steve Bowditch also had a 63 and was in a group four shots behind that included Ian Poulter (65), Henrik Stenson (68) and Bubba Watson (69). Watson had a chance to get closer to the lead until he missed a short birdie putt on the 16th and dropped a shot on the next hole.
Still, what Rose did Saturday was enough evidence for any number of players to have a chance.
That most likely does not include Masters and U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth, whose putting kept his 72 from being worse. Spieth finished with a double bogey to fall nine shots behind, all but assuring that Rory McIlroy will remain No. 1 going into the PGA Championship next week at Whistling Straits.
Rose had no such problems.
He made a pair of key par saves on the front nine that kept the momentum from his birdie-birdie start, and he didn't come seriously close to a bogey the rest of the way. As for the birdies? They were overdue.
Rose made birdie on the sixth hole of the opening round, went the last 12 holes without another, and then made 17 pars and one bogey on Friday. He started fast Saturday, and finished even better.
"I guess that shows it just evens out, really, if you can stay the course and stay patient, kind of believe that you're going to get your run eventually," Rose said. "Yesterday, I actually played really well. ... It just didn't happen yesterday. But came into today with a belief that I was still playing well."
He also decided he was showing Firestone too much respect with all the talk about firm conditions. Rose had been playing short of the flag and expected a bounce toward the hole. On Saturday, he decided to attack more often and was rewarded.
Now he's in position to capture his second World Golf Championship - Rose also won the WGC at Doral.
Furyk remains in position for his first, and it could happen at no better place than Firestone, the course where he was denied victory in 2001 after a seven-hole playoff with Tiger Woods and in 2012 when Furyk made double bogey on the last hole.
The slight pump of the fist when he made par on the last - a lot of emotion for Furyk - had nothing to do with staying tied for the lead. Furyk simply knows that every little shot can make a difference, and he had made bogey on his final hole the previous two days.
It wasn't easy. Furyk played out of the rough for so much of the back nine that when he finally piped one down the middle on the 18th, he was eager to get a short iron in his hand for a shot at birdie. Instead, he saw his ball sitting in so much sand in the divot that he had no choice but to punch an 8-iron.
It worked out, and now he faces one more round to finally try to get a win at Firestone.

SAN FRANCISCO –– The WGC-Cadillac Match Play hasn’t been overly kind to world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who made exits in the first and second rounds, respectively, the past two years. So if there was a term to describe his opening-round effort late Wednesday afternoon against Jason Dufner at TPC Harding Park, it would be this: workmanlike.
He did everything but bring a lunch pail, hard hat and thermos. With Dufner struggling direly to find his game, McIlroy shifted into basic fairways-and-greens mode, and the 13 pars that followed his lone birdie were plenty enough to lead him to a breezy, 5-and-4 victory. Boring? Perhaps. But certainly effective.
“I did what I needed to do out there,” said McIlroy, who in six trips to the Match Play has made the finals once (a 2-and-1 loss to Hunter Mahan in 2012).
• Check out the first-round Match Play results
McIlroy did something that seven other players who were top-seeded in their pools – Jason Day, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Jimmy Walker, Matt Kuchar and J.B. Holmes – failed to do on Day 1: That is, get to Thursday with a record of 1-0.
“I’m not sure the urgency on this Wednesday is right there,” McIlroy said, comparing it to the one-and-done format used in the past. This week, players are guaranteed three matches. “It’s very important to win any match, but obviously your first match. You’re facing a bit of an uphill struggle if you don’t win that one today. … All of a sudden, you’re not in control of your own destiny.”
McIlroy was never in danger against Dufner. He needed a birdie at the opening hole, a par 5, getting down in two from the front fringe, to stay even, and steadily pulled away as the 2013 PGA champion struggled to hit fairways and made five bogeys in 13 holes.
“Jason didn’t have his best stuff, obviously,” said McIlroy, whose overall record in the Match Play moved to 12-6. “I just tried to put him under pressure from the start, hit greens and make him force it a little bit.
“Match play, you just have to beat the person that’s in front of you, and I did that today.”
Next up for McIlroy: Brandt Snedeker, who was trounced by Billy Horschel, 5 and 4, in his opening match. McIlroy will face Horschel, who outdueled him for the FedEx Cup last autumn, on Friday.
