Graves ( /ˈɡrɑːv/; from French: 'gravelly land') is an important subregion of the Bordeaux wine region. Graves is situated on the left bank of the Garonne river, in the upstream part of the region, southeast of the city Bordeaux and stretch over 50 kilometres (31 mi). Graves is the only Bordeaux subregion which is famed for all three of Bordeaux' three main wine types—reds, dry whites and sweet wines—although red wines dominate the total production. Graves AOC is also the name of one Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) which covers most, but not all of the Graves subregion.
The area encompasses villages including Sauternes, Pessac, Talence, Léognan, Martillac, Saint-Morillon, and Portets.
The name Graves derives from its intensely gravelly soil. The soil is the result of glaciers from the Ice Age, which also left white quartz deposits that can still be found in the soil of some of the top winemaking estates.
The Graves is considered the birthplace of claret. Graves wine production for export dates back to Eleanor of Aquitaine, who married Henry II, King of England, creating a flourishing trade between both countries: wine versus coal and iron. In the Middle Ages, the wines that were first exported to England were produced in this area. At that time, the Médoc subregion north of the city Bordeaux still consisted of marshland unsuitable for viticulture, while Graves were naturally better-drained.

Plot: In the late 1940s, British intelligence believes they have a Russian spy in their midst. They narrow the list to 5 or so individuals one of whom is Donald Maclean, who was assigned to the British Embassy in Washington and had full access to US atomic secrets. As they slowly build their case against Maclean, they assign Kim Philby to Washington as the senior liaison officer to the CIA. He is soon joined there by an old friend, Guy Burgess. When Philby gets wind that Maclean is about to be arrested, he dispatches Burgess to warn him and both defect to the Soviet Union. Philby is thoroughly investigated and while there is a general consensus that he too is a Russian spy, there is no concrete proof and, publicly at least, is cleared. Eight years later, in 1963, Philby also defects to the Soviet Union and it is revealed that he has been a KGB Colonel for over twenty years. Based on actual events.

Plot: Dwight Stanford and his wife, Penny, are a pair of spendthrifts who can't hold on to money, dependent for support on Dwight's rich uncle, who sends them a monthly allowance. Conrad Norris, Dwight's cousin, disapproves of Dwight and Penny, and resents his uncle's generosity. The uncle is the victim of a hit-and-run accident and, there being no will, Conrad, as next of kin, inherits. Switch, the uncle's lawyer, tells Dwight he is shutout with no hope of appeal. Dwight starts writing mystery novels about a fictional detective named Steven Knight, which become instant hits and the money pours in. After 15 novels, Dwight refuses to write another line, defies his wife and his agent, and goes on a fishing trip. Penny is so upset that she goes to Reno for a divorce. On the way back from Reno with another divorcée, Celia Stettin, Penny reads in the papers that the great Steven Knight has returned from Africa. Photographs show that "Knight" is really Dwight, who has conceived the idea of posing as him in order to go into the detective business to get new story ideas. Celia, already enamored with the fictional detective, goes to Dwight to find out who is sending threatening letters to her brother, Randolph. She takes him to her home to investigate, where Penny, is also staying. Dwight has a good time playing Celia against Penny, who is already sorry for her hasty actions in Reno. Randolph's rich uncle dies from a fall from a balcony, and Dwight suspects foul play. His investigation uncovers a gang of "accident specialists" who kill wealthy old people and split the inheritance with the heirs. After three attempts on his life, Dwight finally tricks a confession from Conrad, Randolph and Lawyer Switch, who were responsible for his uncle's death and old man Settin. He and Penny reconcile as he prepares to hire three more beautiful secretaries to put Steven Knight back on paper.
