My camera was packed when a horse-fly started biting me, so I whipped it out and started shooting. To my surprise, this up-close video captures the horse-fly's beauty, particularly his amazing eyes.

I strongly recommend not performing this experiment because there are horse-flies in certain parts of the world that are carriers of disease. Horseflies are called many different things, including deer flies, clags, gadflies or breeze flies. These insects are known for attacking animals, including humans, in order to feed on their blood. This is particularly important for female horseflies, which must ingest a protein based blood meal before they are able to reproduce. Horseflies can also transmit parasites and diseases to their victims.
Horseflies use their long mandibles to tear open the skin of an animal, which allows them easier access to blood. This kind of bite is also more painful, which causes victims to focus on the wound rather than the fly. This allows the fly time to get away.
A horsefly bite can cause pain and infection, which may result in pus oozing from the wound. Bites can also allergic reactions. If severe enough, such allergic reactions can be life threatening.

Horse Flies are really annoying. In our neck of the woods it's already hot... but you go outside anyway to do chores or perhaps even enjoy the sprinkler or the pool and, then, here comes this monster of a fly to ruin your day. If the buzzing isn't enough to set your nerves on fire, just wait until one bites you.
Biting flies like horse flies and deer flies have ruined too many good days. But how do you get rid of these viscous bugs?
Several years ago we searched for that answer and settled in on buying the HorsePal Fly Trap, which claimed to capture all these different biting flies, yet all the trap did was sit there. No chemicals. No electricity. It just... sits there. Could that really work?
I'm hear to tell you, yes. Yes, it absolutely works and it works extremely well.

Horse-fly
Horse-flies (for other names, see common names) are true flies in the family Tabanidae in the insect order Diptera. They are often large and agile in flight, and the females bite animals, including humans, to obtain blood. They prefer to fly in sunlight, avoiding dark and shady areas, and are inactive at night. They are found all over the world except for some islands and the polar regions.
Adult horse-flies feed on nectar and plant exudates; the males have weak mouthparts and only the females bite animals to obtain enough protein from blood to produce eggs. The mouthparts of females are formed into a stout stabbing organ with two pairs of sharp cutting blades, and a spongelike part used to lap up the blood that flows from the wound. The larvae are predaceous and grow in semiaquatic habitats.
Female horse-flies can transfer blood-borne diseases from one animal to another through their feeding habit. In areas where diseases occur, they have been known to carry equine infectious anaemia virus, some trypanosomes, the filarial worm Loa loa, anthrax among cattle and sheep, and tularemia. As well as making life outdoors uncomfortable for humans, they can reduce growth rates in cattle and lower the milk output of cows if suitable shelters are not provided.

Several years ago we searched for that answer and settled in on buying the HorsePal Fly Trap, which claimed to capture all these different biting flies, yet all the trap did was sit there. No chemicals. No electricity. It just... sits there. Could that really work?
