Bogota, Colombia

"So what did I do in
Bogota? Well, when I arrived at the airport, I anxiously waited 3 hrs for
Vanessa who arrived from
Santiago. Took a bus to the
Platypus, which turned out to be an amazing hostel
with a great owner who seems to know everything there is to know about traveling. The first day, we walked around with a semi-insane woman from
Oregon..but fortunately she had good intentions. The
Candelaria district where we were staying is the oldest part of Bogota, and was incredible. So much character to the streets and houses and people. I really loved it
...such good vibes. After walking and doing the tourist thing, we returned to the hostel in time for the free 7pm
New Years Eve dinner (and free beer). It was great, we had tamales wrapped in banana leaves, rum and lots of beer with great, interesting people. At about 8:30, we heard firecrackers..so everyone ran out to see the greatest firework show Ive ever seen. Mostly because it was completely unsafe and was cracking me up. Basically, in the middle of the main square there was this guy lighting them off by hand, and when they exploded, shards and sparks would hit the ground.
It´s a bit hard to explain but was really great. At about 1am, a bunch of us headed out to a club that ****in rocked. Some of the best house music
I´ve ever heard. The next day everyone just hung low and sipped all day long on the fantastic coffee they have brewed almost 24hrs a day.
Later than night we played some drinking games with a few
Irish, Australians, and
Ryan..the hilarious loudmouth from
Boston. Ah, the people you run into. The rest of our stay in Bogota, we went to a few museums including the
Museo del Oro (****** in comparison to the one in
Lima), took a day trip up to the salt cathedral- a salt mine that was converted into a cathedral which the tour guides proudly claim has the biggest underground cross in the world. The cathedral was interesting, but I enjoyed the town company of fellow travelers the most. I also went on a frustrating search for a new backpack for myself....which
I never found. Hopefully
I´ll have time to head back to Bogota before leaving
Colombia, it´s my favorite city by far."
