While there are subways in the West, there are major differences between those and the subways in Beijing. When I was planning on coming to China, I didn't really give much thought to transportation. Once I got here, I was in for a huge shock riding the subway. Plus a quick look at the pollution in Beijing.
City officials have announced that the world's second busiest underground transport system will be getting a host of improvements. CCTV's Li Qiong has more.

The Beijing Subway is ridden by an average of 10 million people a day. That's about six times more people than in my home city of Philadelphia! With that amount of people, the subway is bound to get a bit craaaazy.

Marine Steve and I learned how to ride the easy Beijing metro/subway in self-defense two years ago when it was impossible to ever get a taxi. How can you beat a ride that costs .33 cents US a person, including all transfers and all distances (except to Capital Airport).
Preparing to take the subway back from Sanlitun (Yashow Market) to JW Marriott, the machine refused to take Steve's yuan but no worries. Just walk to one of the attendant booths and buy tickets. Maps inside each car show every stop and announcements are made in English and Mandarin.
Public transportation is very crowded which is should be for only a 33 cent ride!

During my 14 day stay in Beijing, a used the subway over 30 times. It takes you to almost al the main tourist attractions.
The subway is most of the time not very crowded, safe and cheap (2 yuan). If using the subway a lot, buy a Transportation Smart Card, http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/beijing/transportation/smart-card.htm

The Beijing Subway (simplified Chinese: 北京地铁; traditional Chinese: 北京地鐵; pinyin: Běijīng dìtiě) is a rapid transit rail network that serves the urban and suburban districts of Beijing municipality. The subway's first line opened in 1971, and the network now has 9 lines, 147 stations[1] and 228 km of tracks in operation and delivers over 4 million rides per day. [2] It is the oldest and busiest subway in mainland China, and the second longest after the Shanghai Metro. Since the newest line, Line 4, entered operation on September 28, 2009,[3] daily ridership has exceeded 5 million.[4] The existing network still cannot adequately meet the city's mass transit needs and is undergoing rapid expansion. Overall, plans call for 19 lines and 561 km of tracks in operation by 2015.[5] The Chinese government's ¥4 trillion economic stimulus package has accelerated subway construction. In addition to 9 lines already under construction, work is set to begin on 3 new lines in 2009, and the entire network will double in size to 420 km by 2012.

The Beijing Subway is a rapid transit rail network that serves the urban and suburban districts of Beijing municipality. The subway is owned by the city of Beijing and has two operators, the wholly state owned Beijing Mass Transit Railway Operation Corp., which operates 13 lines, and the Beijing MTR Corp., a public-private joint-venture with the Hong Kong MTR, which manages 2 lines.
The subway's first line opened in 1969, and the network now has 15 lines, 192 stations and 372 km (231 mi) of track in operation. It is the oldest subway in mainland China. Among the world's metro systems, the Beijing Subway ranks fourth in track length after the metros of Shanghai, London and Seoul, and fourth in annual ridership after those of Tokyo, Seoul, and Moscow.
In 2011, the Beijing Subway delivered over 2.18 billion rides, and on September 9, 2011, set a single-day record of 7.57 million. All but two of Beijing Subway's 15 lines were built within the past decade. The most recent additions, Line 9, along with sections of Lines 8, 15 and Fangshan, entered into operation on December 31, 2011. Despite the rapid expansion, the existing network cannot adequately meet the city's mass transit needs and extensive expansion plans call for 19 lines and over 703 km (437 mi) of track in operation by 2015 and 1,000 km (620 mi) by 2020. The network is set to reach 420 km (260 mi) by the end of 2012.

Beijing (

While there are subways in the West, there are major differences between those and the subways in Beijing. When I was planning on coming to China, I didn't really give much thought to transportation. The Beijing Subway is ridden by an average of 10 million people a day. That's about six times more people than in my home city of Philadelphia! With that amount of people, the subway is bound to get a bit craaaazy. Here's my love letter to the Beijing Subway - the good, the bad and the crazy. -
Riding The Beijing Subway
http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Marine Steve and I learned how to ride the easy Beijing metro/subway in self-defense two years ago when it was impossible to ever get a taxi. How can you beat a ride that costs .33 cents US a person, including all transfers and all distances (except to Capital Airport). Preparing to take the subway back from Sanlitun (Yashow Market) to JW Marriott, the machine refused to take Steve's yuan but no worries. Just walk to one of the attendant booths and buy tickets. Maps inside each car show every stop and announcements are made in English and Mandarin. Public transportation is very crowded which is should be for only a 33 cent ride! -

Beijing Subway is ranked the fourth in length on the world, which has taken peak of 7.24 million rides daily. By compare the world largest subway system, Shanghai Metro daily ridership record only 7.54 on Expo 2010, sounds more relax than Beijing. Line 1 is the most busy route that every moment looks like peak hour. At early 2011, the operator reduced the period to 125 seconds between each departure. And the train only has 41 seconds to stop at each station. But it's still 5 seconds longer than Line 2, which has only 2 minutes per departure. -

From Beijing we can travel to the old capital, Xian, where the famous clay soldiers can be seen. The Ming Dinasty Tombs are only 50 kilometres far from Beijing, but the Great Wall of China is not far either.

Beijing is a big city and it's often said that if you've never been to this city then you've never really been to China. To make the most out of your stay in Beijing, get a Smart Card which you will use to pay for rides on the subway, city buses, some taxis (taxis with the sign of ‘Welcome to Use IC Card’) and the airport express train. Passengers can get 80% discounts when paying for the city-bus fare by the card. What’s more, the Transportation Smart Card can be used at some designated supermarkets, restaurants, department stores, book stores and so on.
ATTRACTIONS:
One of the most stunning landmarks in China is The Great Wall which was recognized as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. It was continuously built from the 3rd century BC to the 17th century AD on the northern border of the country as the great military defence project of successive Chinese Empires, with a total length of more than 20,000 kilometers. Its main body consists of walls, horse tracks, watch towers, fortresses and passes along the Wall. This national symbol is an outstanding example of the superb military architecture, technology and art of ancient China.
Another must-see landmark in Beijing is the National Stadium or popularly known as The Bird's Nest. It was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Its exposed steel structures make it appear like a big nest which embraces and nurses human beings.

Under the leadership of Lord George Macartney, the delegation intends to persuade Emperor Qian-long to open his country for trade with the West. After months of Qian-long's stalling tactics, the Brits take a three day journey out from Beijing, to be greeted with a view few Europeans had seen before: the Great Wall winding its way across mountains, valleys and verdant plains. Macartney believed this was "the most stupendous work of human hands," and this perception of the "Great Wall" would endure to this day. But China was surrounded by not one, but two walls: a physical and a mental one. Since the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), China had tried to shut itself off from the outside world. Mongol and later Manchu invaders found gaps in the northern frontiers. One of the most tenacious opponents, Altan Khan (16th century), even dared lay siege to Beijing. As a result, the walls were fortified even further, fortresses and garrisons were built. Finally, the wall reached the sea, enclosing China and shutting out anything foreign for centuries to come. Eventually, this attitude was the Ming Dynasty's undoing. In 1644, a rebel Manchu took the Dragon Throne. Macartney's mission (in the late 18th century) was a colossal failure, but his assessment of the Great Wall remained deeply engrained in the minds of Westerners, a myth that shrouds the true story of the wall even today.

The Summer Palace is one of the largest Imperial Gardens in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and by far the best preserved one in China now. On November 30th 1998, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO. The Summer Palace is located in the northwest outskirt of Beijing, about 20 kilometers away from the center of Beijing, the Tiananmen Square. With a total space of 300 hectares, it mainly consists two parts: the Longevity Hill and the Kunming Lake, which occupies one quarter and three quarters of the total area respectively. The Longevity Hill is an extension of the Western Hills. While Kunming Lake used to get water from the springs of Jade Spring Hill, which lies to its west. The Kunming Lake now gets water from Miyun Reservoir, northeast of Beijing, about 102 kilometers away. The peak of the Western Hills and Pagoda on Jade Spring Hill can be seen in the distance, which is a typical technique for garden-building in China, known as “Borrowing Scenery”.

In March, 1907, Aurel Stein, a British explorer and adventurer, and his caravan make their way through the Taklimakan desert. Giant ruins grab their attention: it is the Jade Gate, the westernmost point of a more than two-thousand-year-old fortification system. The walls, once built with clay and straw, are barely identifiable in some parts, but the fortification must have had great significance in the past. Travel back in time to around 130 BC. For centuries, belligerent nomads from the north have been raiding, looting and pillaging Chinese settlements. The contrast could not be more pronounced: wild horsemen roaming the desert on the one side, on the other a population of settled farmers. Following a campaign against the "barbarians," Emperor Wudi of the Han dynasty decides to build a wall against the enemies. Construction starts near the location where Aurel Stein would find the ruins of the Jade Gate two thousand years later. Thousands of forced labour convicts were sent to the northwestern part of China, and thousands paid with their lives. Although the wall of the Han Dynasty crumbled into dust, subsequent dynasties built their own walls up to form the stone wall that became a monumental structure and a global icon.
