Xining has a history of over 2100 years[1] and was a chief commercial hub on the Hexi Corridor caravan route to Tibet, handling especially timber, wool and salt in ancient times. The trade along the Hexi Corridor was part of a larger trade corridor along the Northern Silk Road, whose use was intensified in the first century BC after efforts by the Han Dynasty to control this route.[2]
Under the Han dynasty (206 BC--AD 220) a county there called Linqiang controlled the local Qiang tribesmen. It was again a frontier county under the Sui (581--618) and Tang (618--907) dynasties; during the 7th and early 8th centuries it was a center of constant warfare with the Tuyuhun and (later) the Tibetan peoples. In 763 it was overrun by the Tibetans and while under Tibetan control was known to the Chinese as Qingtangcheng. Recovered by the Song dynasty in 1104, it received the name Xining (meaning "peace in the west") and has been the seat of a prefecture or superior prefecture under that name since that time. With the rise of Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism), which began in the 7th century AD, Xining became an important religious center; Qinghai's largest lamasery, a holy place to the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhists, was located at Kunbum, some 19 km to the southeast.
Xining has also been dubbed the Summer Resort Capital of China owing to its cool summer, with a cold semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk). Conditions are influenced by the aridity and high altitude. Lows are cold or cool throughout the year, and highs are often more than 15 °C (27 °F) warmer than lows. Monthly daily averages range from −7.4 °C (18.7 °F) in January to 17.3 °C (63.1 °F) in July; the year averages at 6.1 °C (43.0 °F). Rainfall falls mainly from May to September, and the area is often dry and sunny, with nearly 2680 hours of bright sunshine per year.
Lhasa to Xining on the highest railway in the World over the Tanggula Pass (5072 m or 16640 ft), 200 m higher than Mont Blanc. It took 25hours on a modern sleeper.

While I was visiting Xining, China in the Qinghai province, there was a park across the street from my hostel. Every morning, people would fill the park with different types of exercise. During the rest of my trip in China, I discovered all the parks were always used for things like this and became one of my favorite things to do in the morning.

Some clips of the bus journey from Xining across the Tibetan Plateau to Yushu on the 25th August 2015. The bus left Xining at 11 am and reached Yushu around 1 am at night. After reaching the mountains the altitude was mostly around 4,000 m!
I used a GoPro Hero 4 Black and GoPro Studio as well as Adobe After Effects for editing. The song is from the "Hero3 Reel" template ("Daybreak" from Overwerk). I had some problems with the stabilizing in After Effects, but I hope you still like the video!

The city was a commercial hub along the Northern Silk Road's Hexi Corridor for over 2000 years, and was a stronghold of the Han, Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties' resistance against nomadic attacks from the west. Although long a part of Gansu province, Xining was added to Qinghai in 1928. Xining holds sites of religious significance to Muslims and Buddhists, including the Dongguan Mosque and Ta'er Monastery. The city lies in the Huangshui River valley, and owing to its high altitude, has a cold semi-arid climate. It is connected by rail to Lhasa, Tibet and Lanzhou, Gansu.

A Morning in the Park - Xining, Qinghai, China
While I was visiting Xining, China in the Qinghai province, there was a park across the street from my hostel. Every morning, people would fill the park with different types of exercise. During the rest of my trip in China, I discovered all the parks were always used for things like this and became one of my favorite things to do in the morning. Bus journey from Xining to Yushu (25/08/2015)
Some clips of the bus journey from Xining across the Tibetan Plateau to Yushu on the 25th August 2015. The bus left Xining at 11 am and reached Yushu around 1 am at night. After reaching the mountains the altitude was mostly around 4,000 m! I used a GoPro Hero 4 Black and GoPro Studio as well as Adobe After Effects for editing. The song is from the "Hero3 Reel" template ("Daybreak" from Overwerk). I had some problems with the stabilizing in After Effects, but I hope you still like the video! At a concert at a high school in Xi'ning we had the chance to collaborate with a number of Tibetan kids who sang beautiful folk songs they had learned growing up as nomads on the Tibetan Plateau. Xining has a history of over 2100 years[1] and was a chief commercial hub on the Hexi Corridor caravan route to Tibet, handling especially timber, wool and salt in ancient times. The trade along the Hexi Corridor was part of a larger trade corridor along the Northern Silk Road, whose use was intensified in the first century BC after efforts by the Han Dynasty to control this route.[2]
Under the Han dynasty (206 BC--AD 220) a county there called Linqiang controlled the local Qiang tribesmen. It was again a frontier county under the Sui (581--618) and Tang (618--907) dynasties; during the 7th and early 8th centuries it was a center of constant warfare with the Tuyuhun and (later) the Tibetan peoples. In 763 it was overrun by the Tibetans and while under Tibetan control was known to the Chinese as Qingtangcheng. Recovered by the Song dynasty in 1104, it received the name Xining (meaning "peace in the west") and has been the seat of a prefecture or superior prefecture under that name since that time. With the rise of Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism), which began in the 7th century AD, Xining became an important religious center; Qinghai's largest lamasery, a holy place to the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhists, was located at Kunbum, some 19 km to the southeast.
Xining has also been dubbed the Summer Resort Capital of China owing to its cool summer, with a cold semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk). Conditions are influenced by the aridity and high altitude. Lows are cold or cool throughout the year, and highs are often more than 15 °C (27 °F) warmer than lows. Monthly daily averages range from −7.4 °C (18.7 °F) in January to 17.3 °C (63.1 °F) in July; the year averages at 6.1 °C (43.0 °F). Rainfall falls mainly from May to September, and the area is often dry and sunny, with nearly 2680 hours of bright sunshine per year.

Howdy folks, my 3rd and Last Episode of SKATE China. This is a SOLO trip, just myself. I wanted to explore SOLO distance skating travel. After completing the Murray River solo Feb. 2012, I kind of like traveling alone. This is a raw, self filmed account of my 3 weeks skating / hitch hiking journey from Xining China to Chengdu China. We asked a civil engineer to show us by inspecting the Xining Public Housing complex in Taipei, which is 16 stories high and houses more than 1,000 people. The civil engineer is visiting this more-than-30-year-old housing complex to give it a health check. The local ward chief worries it could be vulnerable to an earthquake. Li Huang Yu-kenFu Hsing Ward ChiefWe’re worried that the foundation was not built well. After the recent earthquake, we’re scared because if this complex were to collapse, (the consequences) would be unthinkable.The apartment complex that toppled in the Feb. 6 earthquake was similar in some ways to the Xining housing complex, and the ward chief wanted to know if the Xining buildings were structurally sound.Chuang Chun-weiCivil EngineerOne indicator is a preliminary seismic evaluation. This is the vlog of Day 1 of our Taiwan trip (stay tuned for all 12 days of vlogs). We woke up early in the morning in Bangkok and headed to Don Muaeng Airport. We checked into our flight via Tiger Air that offers a directly flight at a pretty good rate from Bangkok to Taipei. Everything went smoothly and our flight arrived on time. They didn’t serve any food on our airplane, but luckily as I was doing some work, my wife Ying went and bought some Subway for the airplane ride. So while I didn’t have airplane food this time, I did have Subway on an airplane.
We landed in Taipei, Taiwan, my first time to ever visit Taiwan in the early afternoon, and I had little clue how we were going to get from the airport to the center of Taipei and then on to our hotel. We ended up walking down stairs where we caught a shuttle bus from Taoyuan International Airport for 30 TWD to the Taoyuan train station in order to connect with the Taiwan high speed rail that would take us into the center of Taipei. From Taoyuan railway station we took the high speed rail which cost 165 TWD and in about 20 minutes we arrived at Taipei Main station, which is the major hub of transportation in the center of Taipei. From there we caught the local Metro to Ximen station, where our hotel was booked. After wandering around for a little while and getting a bit lost, we finally arrived into our hotel, called Go Sleep Hotel and the Xining branch, located right within the busy shopping and cultural district of Ximending in Taipei. We arrive to the hotel at about 6 pm almost and we were all very hungry and wanted to have our first meal in Taipei… but I had no idea what we were going to eat.
After walking around Ximending for a few minutes we sat down at the nearest restaurant we could find that was serving local Taiwanese food. Although I didn’t really know what we were ordering, the owner of the restaurant was very nice and after pointing to a few dishes, she kindly brought them to our table. Our first meal in Taipei, Taiwan was a success. From there we just walked around Ximending for a while, enjoying the atmosphere and sampling a few snacks along the way. There was so much food in this area, that is was crazy, so much to eat!

Our first trip to China was an eye opener. The sights, the sounds, the smells, all new to us. We traveled more than 10,000 miles to end up in the remote city of Lanzhou - an industrial mecca surrounded by ancient beauty. The city is a bustling metropolis that caters to more than a 2 million and it was our goal to showcase it like never before... from above.
Utilizing drone technology, we traveled hours outside of the city to capture remote villages, climbed the highest mountain range to reveal the massive size of the city and toured sacred temples that had never been filmed like this before. Our 20 day trip wasn't without challenges. It rained more than 60% of the time, which made operating our drone a difficult task. We managed to move around the weather to capture as much footage as we could before the journey ended and managed to capture some incredible sights in the process.
The people of China were incredibly floored to see this type of technology being used in their city. It was odd enough to see 2 white guys from the states in a city that rarely has foreign tourists but to see a quad copter flying above the city and historical sites really drew their attention. Their hospitality and kindness made for a very fulfilling trip.
We will return to China with out a doubt.
Upon returning to the states we discovered the incredible talent of the Indian Jam Project, a music group from India, which covers movies themes/scores and replays them with a delightful twist. Their latest creation, which covers Han Zimmer's, "First Step" and "Stay", captivated us and really conveyed a sense of peace and wonderment. The adaptations are arranged and composed by Tushar Lall.

Day-by-day Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival
Arrive in Beijing, meet and transfer to hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Temple of Heaven. (L)
Day 2 Beijing
Visit: Great Wall and Ming Tombs (including the visit the Ding Tomb and Sacred Way). (B, L)
Day 3 Beijing
Visit: Tian'anmen Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace. (B, L)
Day 4 Beijing -- Xining
Transfer to airport for morning flight to Xining. On arrival, meet and pay a short visit to city center. Transfer to railway station for overnight train K9801 to Lhasa at 14:56. (B, L)
Accommodation: on board, soft sleeper, 4 berth cabin.
Day 5 Xining -- Lhasa
Arrive in Lhasa at 15:40. Meet and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day at your leisure, acclimatize to high altitude.
Day 6 Lhasa
Visit: Potala Palace, Barkhor Market, Jokhang Monastery, Sera Monastery. (B, L)
Day 7 Lhasa
Visit: Drepung Monastery, Tibetan Family, Norbu Lingka. (B, L)
Day 8 Lhasa -- Gyantse -- Shigatse
On the way to Gyantse, pass one of the most sacred lakes in Tibet, called Yamdroktso Lake. After about 4hrs driving, arrive Gyantse and visit Palkhor monastery. Arrive Shigatse in the late afternoon, the second largest city in Tibet. (B, L, D)
Day 9 Shigatse -- Dingri
Visit: Tashilhunpo Monastery, New Palace of Panchen. In the afternoon, take a 4 hrs drive to Dingri. (B, L, D)
Day 10 Everest Base Camp
Take a drive to the foot of the Mt. Everest and take a carriage to visit the Everest Base Camp and the Rongbuk Monastery. Transfer back to hotel in Dingri. (B, L, D)
Day 11 Dingri -- Lhasa
Transfer back to Lhasa. (B, L)
Day 12 Lhasa -- Beijing
Transfer to airport for flight to Beijing. Transfer to Hotel. (B, L)
Day 13 Departure
Transfer to airport for home flight. End of service. (B)
