Leaders shaking hands and clapping, pull out to wide of the ceremony STORYLINE: Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Southeast Asian leaders met on Monday in southern China's city of Nanning for a summit showcasing Beijing's influence and increasingly close ties with its neighbours. The one-day talks commemorating 15 years of formal ties between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, were expected to focus on progress toward expanding regional free trade. But the dispute over North Korea's nuclear programme and other tensions were also on the agenda. The gathering is an important forum for such issues, said Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, speaking at the summit's opening. "In light of the recent events in North Korea, regional security has never been more important," Arroyo said, adding "It helps tie the region together and strengthens solidarity in times of crisis." However, the leaders did not include the North Korean issue in a joint statement issued after the meeting. That statement, intended as a blueprint for future cooperation, said members would "promote investments by creating a liberal, facilitative, transparent and competitive investment regime in China and ASEAN." Both Wen and Arroyo lauded soaring trade and investment in the region. "Relations between China and ASEAN have never been as good as they are today," Wen said. Wen also met with counterparts from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Cambodia on Monday before the summit's opening. Details of those closed-door talks were not available. ASEAN's members are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, countries ranging from some of the region's most affluent to some of its poorest. With China, the region is home to 1.8 (b) billion people, more than a quarter of humanity. It was unclear if the gathering made any substantive progress on the issue.
