Mount Paektu, Baekdu, or Changbai is an active volcano on the border between North Korea and China. At 2,744 m (9,003 ft), it is the highest mountain of the Changbai and Baekdudaegan ranges.
It is also the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast China. A large crater lake, called Heaven Lake is in the caldera atop the mountain.
The modern names of the mountain in Chinese and Korean come from the Sushen or Proto-Jurchen language of the Manchu peoples. Its modern Manchu name is Golmin Šanggiyan Alin or Long/Ever White Mountain. Similarly, its Mongolian name is Ondor Tsagaan Aula, the Lofty White Mountain.
In Chinese, the mountain itself is known as Chángbáishān ("Ever White Mountain") but the mountain and Heaven Lake taken together are known as Báitóushān ("Whitehead Mountain"). This later name, read in Korean and variously romanized, is the source of the North Korean name Paektu-san and South Korean Baekdu-san.
In English, various authors have used non-standard transliterations.
Heaven Lake (천지 (Ch'ŏnji or Cheonji) in Korean; 天池 (Tiānchí) in Chinese; Tamun omo or Tamun juce in Manchu) is a crater lake on the border between China and North Korea. It lies within a caldera atop the volcanic Baekdu Mountain, a part of the Baekdudaegan mountain range and the Changbai mountain range. It is located partly in Ryanggang Province, North Korea, at 42°00′22″N 128°03′25″E / 42.006°N 128.057°E / 42.006; 128.057, and partly in Jilin Province, northeastern China.
The caldera which contains Heaven Lake was created by a major eruption in 969 AD (± 20 years).
The lake has a surface elevation of 2,189.1 m (7,182 ft). The lake covers an area of 9.82 km² (3.79 sq mi) with a south-north length of 4.85 km (3.01 mi) and east-west length of 3.35 kilometres (2.08 mi). The average depth of the lake is 213 m (699 ft) and maximum depth of 384 m (1,260 ft). From mid-October to mid-June, it is typically covered with ice.
In ancient Chinese literature, Tianchi also refers to Nanming (南冥 sometimes translated as "southern sea").

North Korea ( listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

For the past decade, New Zealanders Joanne and Gareth Morgan have been living the semiretired lifestyle of their dreams, traveling around the world on motorcycles alongside a few of their closest friends. They've traversed all seven continents on their bikes, with routes as varied as Venice to Beijing, Florida to northern Alaska, and South Africa to London, just to name a few. Gareth funds his own trips, many of which he uses to pursue philanthropic endeavors, particularly in the social-investment space. He is able to do so with money he's made as an economist and investment manager—one who has earned the reputation for criticizing unethical practices in New Zealand's financial-services industry. In late August, the Morgans embarked on their most ambitious journey yet, at least physically...
On our way back from the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) to Pyongyang we stopped of for a break at the Sohung Rest House. We were only a small group of about nine people and one of our guides had heard that very occasionally the staff who were all women would sing a song if asked. We asked if they would sing a song and they agreed as we were a very small group and there was nobody else around. One of the women reached into her bag for an accordion and the other four stood in front of us and they all performed this beautiful new North Korean song called We Will Go To Mount Paektu which was only released last year. Within about a minute or two of them finishing the song a large bus full of Chinese visitors arrived and the women went back about their work as if nothing had happened.
Kim Jong Un has climbed North Korea's tallest mountain according to state media. The dictator posed for photographs atop the 9,000ft Paektu Mountain along with army officials and North Korean fighter pilots. "Climbing Mount Paektu provides precious mental pabulum more powerful than any kind of nuclear weapon," state media quoted Kim as saying. Reports state that the climb was part of a military visit to fighter pilots who recently finished a tour of battle sites in the area. The mountain is close to the country's northern border with China. It is considered an important part of Korean folklore and plays a crucial role in state propaganda about the Un family. Another recent claim from North Korea about Kim Jong Un is that the dictator could drive at age three. -----------------------...
