Cape Horn is widely considered to be the most southerly point of South America, and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard. The need for ships to round the Cape Horn was greatly reduced by the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.
This was cruise day #11 of my 16-day cruise. In this video we rounded the notorious Cape Horn. We sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean and then back into the Atlantic again. Visabilty was poor due to the weather conditions.

Produced in 1936, this wonderful old film shows a voyage aboard a schooner named Wanderbird around South America. The captain of this vessel is Warwick M. Tompkins of Gloucester, Massachusetts, who later wrote a book about the journey entitled "50 South to 50 South". For decades, the book has inspired many to seek out their own nautical adventures.
The film is rich in imagery of the age of sail, including shots of sailors at work, Gloucester harbor, a woman at the helm of the vessel, a massive storm, becalmed, images of the Altantic and Pacific Oceans, and the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay.

On December 12-14, 2010, while cruising through Patagonia on Holland America's Veendam, we found ourselves right smack in the middle of one of those notorious Cape Horn storms. Swells reached 98ft, temperatures outside fell to 19º F, and constant winds exceeded 70 knots, or category 2 hurricane force winds. Our Captain, Rik Krombeen, revealed to us this had been the worst storm he had ever sailed through in his 27 year career. He also told us that while we were in the storm, none of the forecasters and meteorologist they use to track weather systems and plot routes placed us in the storm. As you can see, the forecasters and meteorologists were wrong. In the end, the cruise ship lost an anchor and part of the aft deck, several panels fell inside and outside the ship, and a few people were injured. Nonetheless, we were all happy to have survived it.

With over 800 shipwrecks and 10,000 lost lives between 1870 and 1914 before the completion of the Panama Canal, the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica became well-known as the most treacherous ocean waters on the planet.
This region is also notorious for monster storms with winds gusting routinely over 100 mph, fueled by the merger of warm and cold ocean currents of the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and the temperature gradient from the Antarctic ice sheet to the south. A wind gust of near 120 mph was measured just the day before our landing at Cape Horn lighthouse.

On December 12&13 2010, the ms Veendam was sailing out of Port Stanley on her way to Cape Horn. Shortly after leaving the Falkland Islands we encountered hurricane force winds and endured an epic pounding by the southern ocean. These are force 12 winds in excess of 100 mph.

Cape Horn (Dutch: 
Kaap Hoorn (help·info), Spanish: Cabo de Hornos; named after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands) is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile, and is located on the small Hornos Island. Although not the most southerly point of South America, (which are the Diego Ramírez Islands) Cape Horn marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the Cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard.
The need for ships to round the Cape Horn was greatly reduced by the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. However, sailing around the Horn is widely regarded as one of the major challenges in yachting. Thus, a few recreational sailors continue to sail this route, sometimes as part of a circumnavigation of the globe, and almost all of these choosing routes through the channels to the north of the actual Cape (though many take a detour through the islands and anchor to wait for fair weather to actually visit Horn Island or even sail around it to replicate a rounding of this historic point). Several prominent ocean yacht races, notably the Volvo Ocean Race, the VELUX 5 Oceans and the Vendée Globe, sail around the world via the Horn, and speed records for round-the-world sailing are recognized for following this route.

Antarctica - Rounding Cape Horn
The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. And loved it. -

Cape Horn is widely considered to be the most southerly point of South America, and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard. The need for ships to round the Cape Horn was greatly reduced by the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.
This was cruise day #11 of my 16-day cruise. In this video we rounded the notorious Cape Horn. We sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean and then back into the Atlantic again. Visabilty was poor due to the weather conditions.

On December 12-14, 2010, while cruising through Patagonia on Holland America's Veendam, we found ourselves right smack in the middle of one of those notorious Cape Horn storms. Swells reached 98ft, temperatures outside fell to 19º F, and constant winds exceeded 70 knots, or category 2 hurricane force winds. Our Captain, Rik Krombeen, revealed to us this had been the worst storm he had ever sailed through in his 27 year career. He also told us that while we were in the storm, none of the forecasters and meteorologist they use to track weather systems and plot routes placed us in the storm. As you can see, the forecasters and meteorologists were wrong. In the end, the cruise ship lost an anchor and part of the aft deck, several panels fell inside and outside the ship, and a few people were injured. Nonetheless, we were all happy to have survived it.

The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. And loved it.

Whilst on our Drive through North Queensland we took some time out to experience The Torres Strait Islands which lie just north of Cape York, Australia's most northern point, and south of Papua New Guinea.
The Torres Strait Islands creates a fusion of Melanesian and Australian Aboriginal cultures. The Torres Strait Islands are comprised of 274 islands, of which 17 are inhabited with approximately 20 communities. The islands and the surrounding reefs provide diverse habitats for marine life.
We visited Thursday and Horn Island the most well-known of the Torres Strait Islands.To travel to the remote islands (other than Thursday and Horn Islands), you must get permission from the Torres Strait Regional Authority.

Chile was given its name by the Incas who respectfully called it Chili, ‘the country in the south’. Santiago De Chile, the capital of Chile, is dignified, modest and European-looking and also lively, modern and full of Latin temperament. The Plaza De Armas is the heart of the city and the historic centre of colonial Santiago that contains the city’s most important buildings. The city of Valparaiso or, Paradise Valley, is around a hundred and twenty kilometres from the capital of Santiago De Chile on the Pacific coast. The city’s development was closely connected with its harbour which brought it wealth and power. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, escalators have rattled up and down the steep hills of the harbour city with forty five hills flanking the bay, each of them covered with a number of tiny wooden huts. Only a short journey on a gravel road and the Atacama Desert begins. At its centre it is the driest desert in the world where the forces of nature have turned it into an extraordinary landscape. The Atacama extends between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordilleras, an area of stone and sand that is perforated only by various frequently dried out salt lakes. For those ships that sailed around Cape Horn, Ancud represented a safe harbour on the journey north in which they could rest after sailing the stormy waters of the South Pacific. At a time when whales and seals were hunted in the Antarctic, Ancud served as a supply station along the route to the southern Polar sea. From the Atacama Desert in the north to as far as the stormy Tierra Del Fuego in the south, Chile is a country rich in contrast. Volcanoes, arid deserts, salt lakes, lively geysers, sandstone mountains and a cosmopolitan city. All of this is to be found in Chile, a country at the end of the world!

It is difficult to believe that not long ago nothing but the wooden huts of Anglican missionaries stood here, those who introduced Christianity to the Fireland Indians in 1869. The Museo Territorial is contained within one of the town’s oldest buildings and although its display rooms are somewhat small, the exhibits more than compensate. The history of this former prison island is also on show and well documented with old photographs, paintings and various tools. Next we enter Presidio Prison, a dark chapter of Tierra del Fuego’s historic past. It was inaugurated in 1902 after almost four hundred hardened criminals in yellow-blue striped clothing had been forced to build it. Only a handful of people are allowed to go to the island closely supervised by a guide and sticking to well-defined pathways. It is amusing to watch the Magellan Penguins - which actually bray like donkeys! – as they waddle along in true penguin-like comical fashion. Where once brave explorers, far from civilisation, discovered new land, today ECO tourism is flourishing. Hopefully it will always be an adventure to come here on this journey to Fireland at the end of the world!

The Panama Canal is a 77.1-kilometre (48 mi) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016.
France began work on the canal in 1881, but had to stop because of engineering problems and high mortality due to disease. The United States took over the project in 1904, and took a decade to complete the canal, which was officially opened on August 15, 1914. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan. The shorter, faster, and safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and around the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the world economy. It takes between 20 and 30 hours to traverse the canal.
During construction, ownership of the territory that is now the Panama Canal was first Colombian, then French, and then American. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999, and is now managed and operated by the Panama Canal Authority, a Panamanian government agency.
Annual traffic has risen from about 1,000 ships in 1914, when the canal opened, to 14,702 vessels in 2008, the latter measuring a total of 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. By 2008, more than 815,000 vessels had passed through the canal; the largest ships that can transit the canal today are called Panamax. The American Society of Civil Engineers has named the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province, Argentina. It is commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the world (a title long disputed by smaller Puerto Williams). Ushuaia is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, bounded on the north by the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle Channel. It is the only municipality in the Department of Ushuaia, which has an area of 9,390 km2 (3,625 sq mi).

Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, located in Ushuaia
Tourist attractions include the Tierra del Fuego National Park and Lapataia Bay. The park can be reached by highway, or via the End of the World Train (Tren del Fin del Mundo) from Ushuaia. The city has a museum of Yámana, English, and Argentine settlement, including its years as a prison colony. Wildlife attractions include local birds, penguins, seals, and orcas, many of these species colonizing islands in the Beagle Channel. There are daily bus and boat tours to Harberton, the Bridges family compound. Tours also visit the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse. Les Eclaireurs is sometimes confused with the "Lighthouse at the End of the World" (Faro del fin del mundo) made famous by Jules Verne in the novel of the same name; but the latter lies some 200 mi (320 km) east of Ushuaia on Isla de los Estados (Staten Island).

Ushuaia's industrial sector, led by the Grundig Renacer electronics factory, is among the largest in Patagonia.

Since 2007 Ushuaia has hosted the Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo del Fin del Mundo (Bienniel of Contemporary Art at the End of the World), created and organized by the Patagonia Arte & Desafío Foundation under the rubric "South Pole of the Arts, Sciences, and Ecology". The Bienal has gathered over one hundred artists from five continents addressing the motto "think at the End of the World that another world is possible". As a pedagogical project it encourages students at all levels to "think about a better world".

Its commercial pier is the major port of departure in the world for tourist and scientific expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula.[citation needed] Cruise ships visiting the Falkland Islands (referred to by Argentinians as Islas Malvinas) and Antarctica dock at the port, as well as Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Celebrity Cruises, which transit between Valparaíso, Chile, to Buenos Aires and beyond. Antarpply Expeditions, Global Maritime, Hurtigruten, Lindblad Expeditions, Orient Lines, Quark Expeditions, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and other passenger and freight lines provide regularly scheduled services between Ushuaia and all local seaports and settlements. 2:11:39 Punta Arenas, Chile - It was a beautiful sunrise in the Strait of Magellan as we approached dolphin filled harbor of Punta Arenas. I spent the morning touring the largest city in Tierra Del Fuego and in the afternoon I ventured out to Otway Sound Penguin Colony.
2:23:19 Chilean Fjords - We didn't have very nice weather as we sailed north up the coast of Chile through the fjords.
2:25:21 Pacific Ocean - Spent the final two days of the cruise enjoying the entertainment on the ship and the Captain's Farewell Party as we sailed north off the coast of Chile toward Valparaiso.
2:44:08 Santiago, Chile - Took a brief tour of the city during our one night stay in the city, the highlight of which was the funicular ride to the top of Cerro San Cristóbal.
2:51:31 Cusco, Peru - Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO. We toured this beautiful city and its ruins during our two night stay.

0:19:23 Buenos Aires, Argentina - I spend my short one night stay in the heart of downtown just steps from the Obelisk and Republic Square. A late night dinner and tango show is followed by a short tour of the city the next morning.
0:23:21 Star Princess - The start of my 16-day voyage around the horn of South America and through the Antarctic Peninsula.
0:25:20 Montevideo, Uruguay - Weather was perfect as I toured this beautiful city on the northern bank of the Río de la Plata.

0:35:18 Stanley, Falkland Islands - We were blessed with an uncharacteristically beautiful day of weather during our stay in this self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. Our colorful local tour guide was great fun as we toured this very small capital city. Hundreds of Magellanic penguins along the secluded crescent of white sand at Gypsy Cove were a site to behold.
0:44:34 Southern Ocean - We see our first icebergs as we approach the Antarctic Peninsula on this day at sea.
0:45:56 Elephant Island - We were blessed with more great weather on our first day in Antarctica. We rounded Elephant Island, sat in front of the massive Endurance Glacier and circumnavigated Gibbs Island on this day filled with outstanding scenery.
0:52:05 Hope Bay - With glorious sunshine overhead with sailed through Hope Bay and Iceberg Alley. We also got a nice close look at Esperanza Station, the Argentine research base.
0:58:59 Admiralty Bay - Several Polish scientists from the Arctowski Station sailed out to our ship on their rubber zodiacs. A beautiful rainbow crossed the strait as we sailed away from the area.
1:06:20 Neumayer Channel - We dodge icebergs on all sides and stunning scenery abounds as our ship goes as far south as it is legally allowed to travel.
1:25:08 Drake Passage - A very turbulent crossing on this day at sea.
1:30:29 Cape Horn - Weather calms just enough for us to be able to round the notorious Cape Horn at the southern tip of the continent.
1:36:25 Beagle Channel - The sun returns as we sail north between the countries of Chile and Argentina in the scenic Beagle Channel.

We decided to take on the ultimate Australian 4WD adventure and head up Queenslands Cape York Peninsula to Australias most northern point.
There are a number of ways you can tackle this drive experience. You can take on the OTT or OTL (Old Telegraph line track) where you will experience the great remote wilderness of Australia. This track starts at Bramwell junction and finishes at the Jardine River. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. They pass mainly through the highlands to the east and west of the route, and are heavily corrugated which makes for a rough drive.
If you decide to take on the challenge of the OTT there are a number of creek crossings along the way, some more challenging than others. Along the way the track reconnects with the Bypass road so you can bypass some of the more challenging crossings if need be.
Palm creek, Gunshot, cockatoo creek are some of the more challenging crossings we take on, however there is some pretty spectacular places you will come across on the track like the beautiful elliot falls, twin falls and fruit bat falls all of which provide a great place to cool of or camp for the night.
