Coral bleaching occurs when corals get too hot. Bleached corals are essentially sick corals and although they can recover, if temperatures are too warm for too long, the corals will die. Coral bleaching and in some cases death, is an impact of climate change.

Corals get up to 90% of their energy supply from the zooxanthellae that live within them. Stressful conditions (including high water temperature) cause the corals to expel their zooxanthellae. Bleached corals begin to starve once they bleach.
The Great Barrier Reef has been affected by mass bleaching events. Widespread bleaching occurred in 1998 and again in 2002. In both of these years, bleaching was recorded on 50-60 per cent of reefs.
More recently in the summer of 2006, reefs in the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef were affected by bleaching. Unusually high sea temperatures around inshore reefs caused 40% of corals to die at these reefs.
We can all make a difference to the health of the reef by minimising our contributions to climate change by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

As record ocean temperatures cause widespread coral bleaching across Hawaii, NOAA scientists confirm the same stressful conditions are expanding to the Caribbean and may last into the new year, prompting the declaration of the third global coral bleaching event ever on record.
Waters are warming in the Caribbean, threatening coral in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, NOAA scientists said. Coral bleaching began in the Florida Keys and South Florida in August, but now scientists expect bleaching conditions there to diminish. This bleaching event, which began in the north Pacific in summer 2014 and expanded to the south Pacific and Indian oceans in 2015, is hitting U.S. coral reefs disproportionately hard. NOAA estimates that by the end of 2015, almost 95 percent of U.S. coral reefs will have been exposed to ocean conditions that can cause corals to bleach.
The biggest risk right now is to the Hawaiian Islands, where bleaching is intensifying and is expected to continue for at least another month. Areas at risk in the Caribbean in coming weeks include Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and from the U.S. Virgin Islands south into the Leeward and Windward islands.
The next concern is the further impact of the strong El Niño, which climate models indicates will cause bleaching in the Indian and southeastern Pacific Oceans after the new year. This may cause bleaching to spread globally again in 2016.

Coral bleaching is the loss of intracellular endosymbionts (Symbiodinium, also known as zooxanthellae) through either expulsion or loss of algal pigmentation. The corals that form the structure of the great reef ecosystems of tropical seas depend upon a symbiotic relationship with unicellular flagellate protozoa that are photosynthetic and live within their tissues. Zooxanthellae give coral its coloration, with the specific color depending on the particular clade. Under stress, corals may expel their zooxanthellae, which leads to a lighter or completely white appearance, hence the term "bleached".
Bleaching occurs when the conditions necessary to sustain the coral's zooxanthellae cannot be maintained. Any environmental trigger that affects the coral's ability to supply the zooxanthellae with nutrients for photosynthesis (carbon dioxide, ammonium) will lead to expulsion. This process is a "downward spiral", whereby the coral's failure to prevent the division of zooxanthellae leads to ever-greater amounts of the photosynthesis-derived carbon to be diverted into the algae rather than the coral. This makes the energy balance required for the coral to continue sustaining its algae more fragile, and hence the coral loses the ability to maintain its parasitic control on its zooxanthellae.

This video is a time-lapse of a coral during temperature stress in both white and fluorescent light. Two cameras shooting the same coral were used to obtain the side by side images. The fluorescent video (left panel) was captured with a strobe with a blue filter and a yellow filter over the camera lens. Coral fluorescence decreases with temperature stress prior to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching causes a spike in perceived coral fluorescence due to the loss of symbiotic dinoflagellates in the coral cells. The study showed that coral fluorescence could be used as a proxy for coral growth. This video is a time-lapse of a coral during temperature stress in both white and fluorescent light. Two cameras shooting the same coral were used to obtain the side by side images. The fluorescent video (left panel) was captured with a strobe with a blue filter and a yellow filter over the camera lens. Coral fluorescence decreases with temperature stress prior to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching causes a spike in perceived coral fluorescence due to the loss of symbiotic dinoflagellates in the coral cells. The study showed that coral fluorescence could be used as a proxy for coral growth. Waters are warming in the Caribbean, threatening coral in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, NOAA scientists said. Coral bleaching began in the Florida Keys and South Florida in August, but now scientists expect bleaching conditions there to diminish. This bleaching event, which began in the north Pacific in summer 2014 and expanded to the south Pacific and Indian oceans in 2015, is hitting U.S. coral reefs disproportionately hard. NOAA estimates that by the end of 2015, almost 95 percent of U.S. coral reefs will have been exposed to ocean conditions that can cause corals to bleach.
The biggest risk right now is to the Hawaiian Islands, where bleaching is intensifying and is expected to continue for at least another month. Areas at risk in the Caribbean in coming weeks include Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and from the U.S. Virgin Islands south into the Leeward and Windward islands.
The next concern is the further impact of the strong El Niño, which climate models indicates will cause bleaching in the Indian and southeastern Pacific Oceans after the new year. This may cause bleaching to spread globally again in 2016.

This bleaching event, which began in the north Pacific in summer 2014 and expanded to the south Pacific and Indian oceans in 2015, is hitting U.S. coral reefs disproportionately hard. NOAA estimates that by the end of 2015, almost 95 percent of U.S. coral reefs will have been exposed to ocean conditions that can cause corals to bleach.
The biggest risk right now is to the Hawaiian Islands, where bleaching is intensifying and is expected to continue for at least another month. Areas at risk in the Caribbean in coming weeks include Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and from the U.S. Virgin Islands south into the Leeward and Windward islands.
The next concern is the further impact of the strong El Niño, which climate models indicates will cause bleaching in the Indian and southeastern Pacific Oceans after the new year. This may cause bleaching to spread globally again in 2016.

This video is a time-lapse of a coral during temperature stress in both white and fluorescent light. Two cameras shooting the same coral were used to obtain the side by side images. The fluorescent video (left panel) was captured with a strobe with a blue filter and a yellow filter over the camera lens. Coral fluorescence decreases with temperature stress prior to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching causes a spike in perceived coral fluorescence due to the loss of symbiotic dinoflagellates in the coral cells. The study showed that coral fluorescence could be used as a proxy for coral growth.

Evidence that Australia's Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its worst coral bleaching on record has renewed calls for the UN to list it as "in-danger". The National Coral Bleaching Taskforce says 95% of reefs from Cairns to Papua New Guinea are now severely bleached. It says only four reefs out of 520 have no evidence of bleaching. Unesco voted not to put the reef on its World Heritage in Danger list last year, but green groups want the decision reassessed. Coral taskforce convener Professor Terry Hughes told the BBC his team was yet to find the southern border where the bleaching ended. Super Coral That Can Survive Global Warming
Scientists have discovered that some coral species come through the effects of global warming unscathed. In 1998, the world lost 18 percent of its coral reefs because of global coral bleaching brought about by warmer and more acidic ocean water. Researchers at the University of Hawaii started a program to identify the resilient super corals, breed them, and introduce them to the ocean environment. They hope that the corals will thrive and stop the decline of the coral reef ecosystem. Australian scientists managing the Great Barrier Reef have lifted their emergency response to the highest level following the publication of video footage of damage caused by coral bleaching. Scientists have discovered that some coral species come through the effects of global warming unscathed. In 1998, the world lost 18 percent of its coral reefs because of global coral bleaching brought about by warmer and more acidic ocean water. Scientists have discovered that some coral species come through the effects of global warming unscathed. In 1998, the world lost 18 percent of its coral reefs because of global coral bleaching brought about by warmer and more acidic ocean water. Researchers at the University of Hawaii started a program to identify the resilient super corals, breed them, and introduce them to the ocean environment. They hope that the corals will thrive and stop the decline of the coral reef ecosystem.

The most pristine part of the Great Barrier Reef has been 'fried' in the worst coral bleaching event on record, a reef expert says.
Professor Terry Hughes, the convenor of the National Coral Bleaching Taskforce, says the federal government has failed to link its decisions - including scrapping a price on carbon and support for coal mining - to reef health.
He fears major bleaching events, driven by climate change, are starting to occur more frequently than the 10 years it takes the reef to recover.
Prof Hughes has just returned from aerial surveys that show devastating levels of bleaching in the northern part of the reef, from Cairns to the top of Cape York and beyond.
Of 520 reefs surveyed between Cairns and Papua New Guinea in recent days, just four appeared to be unaffected.
And 95 per cent of those reefs have been ranked in the two most severe categories of bleaching, meaning at least 30 per cent of their coral is affected, and in a vast number of cases more than 60 per cent.
The damage in the northern part of the reef far surpasses the previous worst bleaching in 2002, when 18 per cent of reefs were ranked in the two most severe categories.
'The north has fried,' Prof Hughes told AAP on Tuesday. 'This is an ongoing, slow-motion train wreck.'
UNESCO last year decided not to list the World Heritage-listed reef as 'in danger', despite concerns over mining-related port developments and water quality.
In arguing against the listing, Australia pointed to the health of northern reefs - the very ones now hit by unprecedented bleaching.
'I hope these scientific findings will convince the commonwealth government to link its greenhouse gas policies to the vulnerability of the reef to climate change,' Prof Hughes said.
Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt, who toured bleached parts of the reef earlier this month, says damage in the northern section is the worst on record.
But he says the rest of the marine park area has seen only minor or moderate bleaching, and the government has ramped up surveying and research efforts in the face of the latest event.
Green groups have again rounded on Mr Hunt for approving Adani's planned Carmichael coalmine in Queensland's Galilee basin - the coal will be burnt in India to service the country's electricity needs.
'The federal and Queensland environment ministers need to get off their hands and stop paving the way for Carmichael ... at a time when the mining and burning of coal is driving climate change, warming our waters and bleaching our reef,' Greenpeace's Shani Tager said.
State Mines Minister Anthony Lynham has said Queensland needs the economic benefits that will flow from the $16.5 billion mine.
On Tuesday, he said Queensland could have a healthy reef and a future in coal, noting most coal exports are metallurgical coal that's not burnt but used to produce steel.
He did not mention the Carmichael mine, which also requires a massive upgrade of the Abbot Point coal terminal south of Townsville.

Australian scientists managing the Great Barrier Reef have lifted their emergency response to the highest level following the publication of video footage of damage caused by coral bleaching.
Authorities this month said that areas of the World Heritage site were experiencing the worst bleaching in 15 years, at least partially as a result of the current El Nino, one of the strongest in two decades.
Coral bleaching is a process by which coral expels living algae, causing it to calcify. Coral can only survive within a narrow band of ocean temperature.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority on Sunday said it was lifting its response to level three, authority chairman Dr Russell Reichelt said.
"A level-three response level means we’re stepping up surveys in response to the coral mortality to help us better understand the effects of various pressures on the reef and help guide management actions,” Reichelt said in a statement.
The footage, shot on Saturday by the University of Queensland's CoralWatch group, has raised serious concerns amongst scientists and environmental groups about the growing impact of climate change.
"The new video and stills are very concerning and show large sections of coral drained of all color and fighting for survival," World Wildlife Fund spokesman Richard Leck said in a statement.
"This is the worst coral bleaching event ever to hit this most pristine part of the Great Barrier Reef."
Scientists said the Great Barrier Reef needs a break in El Nino conditions within weeks if some coral areas are to survive, but the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's most recent forecast calls for a continuation of El Nino conditions.
This year will be the hottest on record and 2016 could be even hotter due to El Nino, the World Meteorological Organization has said.
The Great Barrier Reef stretches 2,000 km (1,200 miles) along Australia's northeast coast and is the world's largest living ecosystem. It brings in billions of dollars a year in tourism revenue.
UNESCO's World Heritage Committee last May stopped short of placing the Great Barrier Reef on an "in danger" list, but the ruling raised long-term concerns about its future.

Inter- and intra-specific variation in coral bleaching - Dominique McCowan
My PhD research aims to explore both intrinsic and extrinsic causes of variation in bleaching susceptibility within and among coral species, which is the first step in understanding the capacity of species to withstand ongoing climate change. Dire predictions about the fate of reef-building corals often ignore the potential for acclimation and/ or adaptation among corals. Phenotypic plasticity is necessary for organisms to acclimate or adapt to environmental conditions, but the variable(s) that cause(s) phenotypic plasticity must be heritable to have the capacity to do so. -

Dr Nick Graham - Predicting climate-driven regime shifts versus rebound potential in coral reefs
Climate-induced coral bleaching is among the greatest current threats to coral reefs, causing widespread loss of live coral cover. Conditions under which reefs bounce back from bleaching events or shift from coral to algal dominance are unknown, making it difficult to predict and plan for differing reef responses under climate change. Here we document and predict long-term reef responses to a major climate-induced coral bleaching event that caused unprecedented region-wide mortality of Indo-Pacific corals. Following loss of 90% live coral cover, 12 of 21 reefs recovered towards pre-disturbance live coral states, while nine reefs underwent regime shifts to fleshy macroalgae. It's not Hi Def video, but the coral reef was sure was healthier back in the day: Long before coral bleaching, global warming, lion fish, cruise ships --- when the island was less inhabited. Dive site recorded near end of this segment is Karpata. This was recorded on an analog VHS underwater system akin to putting the camera in a goldfish bowl and taking it for a swim. I thought it was great at the time, but 25+ years later its more than antiquated. -

Dr Nick Graham is a Research Fellow in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University. He is an applied coral reef scientist working on large scale ecological questions directly relevant to sustainable management and conservation. He has assessed the long-term impacts of climate induced coral bleaching on coral reef fish assemblages, fisheries and ecosystem stability. He has also worked extensively on the ecological ramifications of fishing and closed area management to reef systems. Climate-induced coral bleaching is among the greatest current threats to coral reefs, causing widespread loss of live coral cover. Conditions under which reefs bounce back from bleaching events or shift from coral to algal dominance are unknown, making it difficult to predict and plan for differing reef responses under climate change. Here we document and predict long-term reef responses to a major climate-induced coral bleaching event that caused unprecedented region-wide mortality of Indo-Pacific corals. Following loss of 90% live coral cover, 12 of 21 reefs recovered towards pre-disturbance live coral states, while nine reefs underwent regime shifts to fleshy macroalgae. Functional diversity of associated reef fish communities shifted substantially following bleaching, returning towards pre-disturbance structure on recovering reefs, while becoming progressively altered on regime shifting reefs. We identified threshold values for a range of factors that accurately predicted ecosystem response to the bleaching event. Recovery was favoured when reefs were structurally complex and in deeper water, when density of juvenile corals and herbivorous fishes was relatively high and when nutrient loads were low. Whether reefs were inside no-take marine reserves had no bearing on ecosystem trajectory. While conditions governing regime shift or recovery dynamics were diverse, pre-disturbance quantification of simple factors such as structural complexity and water depth accurately predicted ecosystem trajectories. These findings foreshadow the likely divergent but predictable outcomes for reef ecosystems in response to climate change, thus guiding improved management and adaptation.

Long before coral bleaching, global warming, lion fish, cruise ships --- when the island was less inhabited. Dive site recorded near end of this segment is Karpata. This was recorded on an analog VHS underwater system akin to putting the camera in a goldfish bowl and taking it for a swim. I thought it was great at the time, but 25+ years later its more than antiquated.

Before joining AIMS Jamie worked for the WorldFish Center where he managed a range of coral reef projects including ReefBase, a global information system for coral reefs. During this time he served as Co-Chair of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network Management Committee and Chair of the International Coral Reef Action Network Steering Committee. Prior to WorldFish he was the Director of Information Support at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and a senior scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. During this period he conceived of, and led the production of the first State of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area Report and edited the first AIMS Long-Term Monitoring Report for the GBR. Jamie was a member of the JCU Coral Reproduction Group which was instrumental in discovering the mass coral spawning phenomenon, and which was awarded Australian Eureka Prize in 1992. In 2014 Kauai corals faced both a mass bleaching event and an ongoing disease outbreak. This presentation covers basic coral biology, an overview of north shore corals, current impacts facing Kaua`i corals and what the state and partners are doing to help protect this valuable resource.

We will also hit on all the features of the most popular brands, proper ongoing maintenance for your pumps and finish with the flow solution we selected for the BRS 160.
Water flow is one of the more important elements of a reef tank. Water movement promotes gas exchange which increases oxygen, decreases carbon dioxide and helps maintain the pH of the tank.
Proper water flow also plays an important role in biological function within the coral. Good flow will keep the coral’s tissue surrounded with oxygen rich water, calcium and alkalinity which promotes proper respiration and calcification.
Water flow also serves as the mechanism which corals use to pump and circulate fluids, nutrients, important elements and waste within the coral by constantly pushing on the corals soft tissue with irregular patterns.
Strong flow is also believed to be closely related to preventing coral bleaching by helping the coral rid itself of the toxic oxygen radicals which can be produced with long intense lighting periods like those found in many reef aquariums.
These days flow is almost always provided with a powerhead of some type which is just a small efficient pump that uses an impeller or propeller to shoot high velocity water out the front. This type of pump is generally really easy to install and consumes very little power for the amount of flow it creates.
AC power heads are the most popular simply because they are the most affordable. There are three major brands which all have different advantages: Tunze, Hydor, and Sicce.
When more control over flow and efficiency is desired, DC powerheads will be your best bet. DC pumps are not only capable of always starting in the correct direction every time but they also can slowly and evenly ramp up and down from zero gallons to thousands of gallons an hour. Typhoon Haiyan was a monster made of wild wind and water, which ravaged the Philippines with frightening ferocity. As the nation struggles to recover, there are fears that this is the first of many.
In recorded history, no wind has has hit land with greater force. Along with the surging sea it dragged onshore, it meant that thousands would soon be dead and more than 4 million people displaced. It's a catastrophe that would challenge the wherewithal of any nation, but when your people are scattered across thousands of islands, how can The Philippines recover? What's most terrifying is that some worry that climate change may make these super typhoons a regular occurrence. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster a Filipino UN delegate made an impassioned call for change. "We can take drastic action now to ensure that we prevent a future where super typhoons become a way of life." Now as the Filipinos struggle to cope with the total devastation, deeper economic issues caused by years of pollution and overfishing will plague the archipelago even more in their struggle to rebuild. "This island was surrounded by coral reefs but now they're all gone - from coral bleaching, over fishing and warming of the waters", says politician Vince Escario sadly.

Bio:
Dr Jamie Oliver is Science Leader for Western Australia at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. He is also Leader of the Exploring Marine Biodiversity Research Team at AIMS. He serves as deputy node leader for the Western Australian node of the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS). Prior to this Dr Oliver worked for the WorldFish Center. Prior to WorldFish he was the Director of Information Support at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and a senior scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. During this period he conceived of, and led the production of the first State of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area Report and edited the first AIMS Long-Term Monitoing Report for the GBR. Dr Oliver was a member of the JCU Coral Reproduction Group which was instrumental in discovering the mass coral spawning phenomenon, and which was awarded Australian Eureka Prize in 1992. His other reef interests include coral ecology, coral bleaching, remote sensing, reef monitoring and management and larval dispersal.
