Pandora

In Greek mythology, Pandora (Greek: Πανδώρα, derived from πᾶν, pān, i.e. "all" and δῶρον, dōron, i.e. "gift", thus "the all-endowed", "the all-gifted" or "the all-giving") was the first human woman created by the gods, specifically by Hephaestus and Athena on the instructions of Zeus. As Hesiod related it, each god helped create her by giving her unique gifts. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to mold her out of earth as part of the punishment of humanity for Prometheus' theft of the secret of fire, and all the gods joined in offering her "seductive gifts". Her other name—inscribed against her figure on a white-ground kylix in the British Museum—is Anesidora, "she who sends up gifts" (up implying "from below" within the earth).

According to the myth, Pandora opened a jar (pithos), in modern accounts sometimes mistranslated as "Pandora's box" (see below), releasing all the evils of humanity—although the particular evils, aside from plagues and diseases, are not specified in detail by Hesiod—leaving only Hope inside once she had closed it again.

Río Roma

Río Roma (English: "Roma River") are a Mexican Latin pop duo. It consists of José Luis Roma and Raúl Roma, who are brothers.

José Luis is also a prolific songwriter. Famous singers who had recorded songs written by him include: María José, Alejandro Fernández, Camila, Alejandra Guzmán and Pandora, among others.

They chose "Río Roma" as name because they like how it sounds and because it reads "oír amor (hearing love)" backwards.

Biography

From 1997 until 2002, José Luis was member of Mexican boy band Ciao Mama, with whom he recorded two albums: "Ciao Mama" in 1999, and "Puntos Suspensivos..." in 2001, both under EMI Music México.

In 2008 José Luis and Raúl recorded a Norteño album as "Josel y Raúl". They started as Río Roma until 2011.

Amanda Miguel

Amanda Antonia Miguel Samso is a Mexican singer. For the last quarter of a century, Amanda has had a successful career.

Early life

Born in Gaiman, in the Chubut Province in Argentina, June 1, 1956, to Angel Raúl Miguel and Ana Delia Samso. Daughter of a music teacher, Amanda Miguel developed her own interest and love for music as young as four years old. At sixteen, the Miguel's moved to Buenos Aires, where Amanda enrolled in Conservatorio de Albert Williams, where she studied music and piano.

Rise to fame

At 17, she met Diego Verdaguer, a man 5 years her senior, whom she would later marry. At this time, Diego was already an established artist, and she joined his musical group called Mediterráneo. The group enjoyed success in Argentina, but after being discovered by a Mexican record executive, she launched her own solo career with help from Diego.

Miguel's first album, El Sonido Vol. 1, recorded in 1981, and released a year later. Implementing a different sound and style than Mediterráneo. Her album was a success, follow up albums followed and released a year later. Songs released during this period such as Él Me Mintió and Mi Buen Corazón have become staples of Spanish radio stations.

List of French expressions in English

English contains many words of French origin, such as art, competition, force, machine, money, police, publicity, role, routine, table, and many other anglicized French words. These are pronounced according to English rules of phonology, rather than French. Around 45% of English vocabulary is of French origin, most coming from the Anglo-Norman spoken by the upper classes in England for several hundred years after the Norman Conquest, before the language settled into what became Modern English.

This article, however, covers words and phrases that generally entered the lexicon later, as through literature, the arts, diplomacy, and other cultural exchanges not involving conquests. As such, they have not lost their character as Gallicisms, or words that seem unmistakably foreign and "French" to an English speaker.

The phrases are given as used in English, and may seem correct modern French to English speakers, but may not be recognized as such by French speakers as many of them are now defunct or have drifted in meaning. A general rule is that, if the word or phrase retains French diacritics or is usually printed in italics, it has retained its French identity.
