Sun, 13/03/2016 - 14:12   Редакция Please show solidarity and help the arrested anarchist Dmitry Buchenkov

A well-known antifascist and anarchist Dmitry Buchenkov, PhD in political science, was arrested in Moscow in December 2015. He is suspected of participating in the riots of May 6, 2012. More than 400 persons were arrested as a result of a mass protest action against Putin’s politics that took place on May 6, 2012 in Moscow. Dmitry was not in Moscow on that day, he was in Nizhny Novgorod, more than 300 km away from Moscow. Dmitry is a long-time participant of the antifascist and anarchist movements and he has done a lot for their development. Dmitry’s comrades and friends believe that the arrest is related to his political militancy and his active position regarding the developments taking place in the country.

Tue, 01/03/2016 - 12:16   A-ryhmä Sat 26th of March Disturbances-lecture: The Arrival of Feminism at the Anarchist Movement - the Anarcho-Feminist Union 'Peppi' And Other Feminist Groups in the Activist Movement of the 1990s

Doors open at 4 pm, Lecture begins at 4:15 pm The anarchist movement in Finland in the 1990s was largely organized by men. The Finnish Anarchist Union, FAU (Suomen anarkistiliitto, SAL), Kapinatyöläinen-magazine ("Rebel Worker"), solidarity demonstrations and panel discussions were dominated by men, and mostly men's voices were heard at anarchist meetings. Red anarchism in Helsinki, especially, leaned heavily on the traditions of the workers' movement which did include lofty speeches about women's rights but whose gender roles were, in practice, quite traditional. In 1995, Peppi, an anarcho-feminist union, was founded to tackle these problems, and the individuals involved wanted to approach feminism as a matter of class and race in addition to opposing...

In Kupoli, Mannerheimintie 7 b 7th floor. The Porthania squat of September 2015 began the Education Strike movement that also spread to Turku, Tampere, Joensuu and Jyväskylä. On December 1st, there were demonstrations around Finland, in Helsinki the university main building was squatted on, and in Turku, the Porthania squat's record for the the longest-standing university squat in the history of Finland was beaten. For the first time in the history of the student movement in Finland, it would seem, multiple buildings were squatted on simultaneously in several cities. However, the planned education cuts have not been canceled, and in January, the University of Helsinki announced that it would be sacking 570 employees as the result of negotiations. How should the anti-education...

Thu, 14/01/2016 - 10:57   Редакция Dmitry Okrest: "Who are your comrades now?"

At the beginning of December, Dmitry Buchenkov became the latest person in Russia’s ‘Bolotnaya Case’, a series of investigations and trials into Russia’s opposition now in its fourth year. Buchenkov, a 36-year old history lecturer at a Moscow medical university, is the 31st defendant in Bolotnaya. More than two hundred people were detained in the initial case, which stretches back to the ‘March of the Millions’, an opposition demonstration on the eponymous square in May 2012. The protest was timed to coincide with the inauguration of Vladimir Putin’s third presidential term, and this didn’t go unnoticed. During the sanctioned demonstration, the police cut off the square, in effect ‘kettling’ the protesters. Scuffles started...

Russian authorities have upped the ante in their pressure on anarchists from “Autonomous Action” movement as of late – this includes a new prisoner charged with the Bolotnaya Square case, Dmitry Buchenkov, and an antifa activist Alexei Sutuga. The Insider found out why the Kremlin is all rage against the leftist anarchists, and we also talked to Sutuga’s mother. The End of Antifa?

Despite the bleakness of the situation in Ukraine, at least I was amused by the fact that Nazis were fighting on both sides of the front, killing each other.

Anarchism in the context of civil war

On Friday, the 2nd of May, the House of Trade Unions in Odessa caught on fire. Altogether at least 42 people lost their lives during the clashes in the city, most of them in the fire and the others in streetfights. There is an excellent Russian language, eyewitness account of the events available here. Events began to unfold when armed pro-Russian AntiMaidan fighters attacked a demonstration organised by football hooligans with nationalist sympathies. This attack resulted in lethalities, but soon the pro-Russians were overpowered. They escaped back to their protest camp in the Kulikovo field, but pro-Kiev demonstrators followed and lit the protest camp on fire. The pro-Russians then escaped to the House of the Trade Unions, which soon caught on fire. The fire spreading, is visible in this...
