When a medical school dean finally came face to face with his college’s adopted pelican, it was as if they’d known each for years. Photographs posted online showed Vladimír Komárek, the dean of the Second Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, cradling the enormous bird in his arms. Komárek smiled. At USB’s Academic Opening on 20 January 2016, Prof Stan du Plessis, Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at Stellenbosch University, welcomed new students at the business school. He outlined the macro-economic environment in which USB’s students – who will become future leaders, managers and policy makers – find themselves. Prof Du Plessis said real challenges are awaiting us because of the real flaws in our decision making and the failure of our society to collaborate productively and progressively in government, business and society. He said USB as a business school would fail if it did not give students the analytical tools to understand their choices and the leadership capabilities to manage the consequences of their choices. Quoting Shakespeare, he said the fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves: “Our faults lie in our own society and in the choices we make collectively.” Wrapping up the event, Prof Piet Naudé, Director of USB, talked about USB’s positives, progress and values, saying: “The destiny of our economy and our personal lives is not somewhere in the stars, but within our own reach and responsibilities.”

Biography:
Souvik Bhattacharyya graduated from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India with a Bachelor's degree (1981), MS (1985) from University of Cincinnati, USA and PhD from Texas A&M; University (1991), USA in Mechanical Engineering specializing in thermal sciences. After a post-doctoral research stint at Teaxs A&M;, he joined the faculty of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, India in 1991 where he was the Dean (Students' Affairs) during 2009-2012 and has been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering since 2003. He also held faculty position at University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand during 1998-2000. Currently he is the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
Dr Bhattacharyya serves on the Editorial Boards of Energy Conversion and Management, International Journal of Power and Energy Systems and Journal of Nano Energy and Power Research. He is an Associate Editor of the international journal Alternative Energy. His research interests include heat transfer enhancement, thermodynamic optimization, energy engineering, natural refrigerant based transcritical heating cooling systems, and natural circulation loops. A recipient of the ASHRAE Best Paper Award, Dr Bhattacharyya has published 90 refereed and reputed international journal papers and over 90 papers in international conference proceedings, besides contributing several articles in edited books published internationally. He is now a co-author of the celebrated heat transfer text by JP Holman. He has been an invited keynote speaker and panelist in several international conferences and workshops. He is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and has been principal investigator for a large number of sponsored research projects. He has been an expert member of the DST Fast Track Young Engineer Research Project Committee during 2007-2012.

Dr Chris Gallavin, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Head of School at the School of Law
There are two things that particularly fascinate New Zealanders; real estate and criminal justice. He suggests that these topics have more in common than you might think - discussion of each is often governed by emotion, presumption and gut feeling. Haig, Doherty, Bain, Tamihere, Ellis, Watson, October, and Teina Pora - how can these cases exist and what do their frailties say about our system? Rotten to the core or to be expected? In this lecture the basis of the adversarial system of criminal law will be discussed. How are criminal cases put together? What is a case theory and how are they devised? What is the basis of the rules that govern the giving of evidence? The admission of evidence and exclusion of evidence such as prior convictions appears to many to be entirely unjust, is that true or is there a method to the legal madness? This lecture will not be a defence of the criminal law but will seek to explore where we might profitably focus our attention for the future development of our criminal justice system - a focus governed by a better understanding of the criminal law and not merely by emotion and irrationality.
Dr Chris Gallavin is the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Head of School at the School of Law, University of Canterbury. His areas of academic expertise are criminal law (consent and culpable homicide) and the law of evidence. He has published extensively in the areas of domestic and international criminal justice and is consistently the University of Canterbury’s most media cited member of staff. Since becoming Dean and Head at Canterbury in August 2012 Chris has embarked upon a programme of reform that is shaping the Law School as the showcase of community engagement at the University of Canterbury. Currently the School of Law is rolling out New Zealand’s first compulsory clinical legal programme. For Chris, community engagement is more than just a marketing tool – it is a pedagogical imperative.
