Barbara Solomon Probst
Nueva York is an Emmy award winning series about Latino culture in New York. The 30-minute show explores the rich textures of Latino society in the city, focusing on politics, art, culture, and the traditions of Spanish-speaking populations across the metropolitan area.
Each episode features prominent leaders from the tri-state area's cultural and public spheres sharing their thoughts and accomplishments with viewers. Interviews are hosted by Mexican novelist and critic Carmen Boullosa and Chilean journalist and writer Patricio Lerzundi. The general producer is Professor Jerry Carlson, specialist in Latin American cinema. They are all members of the academic staff at CUNY. The series is produced by bilingual professionals from Colombia, Guatemala, Massachusetts, Mexico, and Texas. In addition, the series offers documentary segments about events, exhibits, concerts, and institutions.
Since its first broadcast, Nueva York has built cultural and social ties between Latinos, and amongst Spanish speaking non-Latino communities. Each episode is subtitled in English so that the largest numbers of viewers may appreciate more fully the richness and diversity of the cultural and humanitarian expression of the Spanish-speaking communities in the city. It is a television program that seeks to present the image of the social, educational and economic aspirations of the generations of immigrants and emigrants who have sought a better quality of life for themselves and their families.
Nueva York won a New York Emmy in 2009, two more in 2010 and three in 2011. The series premiered on CUNY TV on October 6, 2005. Nueva York also airs on Channel 22 in Mexico, and Channel 11 in Panama.

"Barbara Probst Solomon started her literary career as a teenaged American girl in post-
World War II Paris. She introduced Peninsula, an anti-Franco literary magazine that was smuggled across the Pyrenees into Spain into the annals of Spanish history. Today Ms. Solomon is working at the cutting edge of the publishing business with her current literary magazine The Reading Room. Whereas in the past books and magazines were produced using expensive editorial and typesetting resources and required the dedication of capital to the warehousing of a large print run, The Reading Room is produced by the writers and printed on demand. As Saul Bellow, who had many small magazines of his own, put it when he joined the board of The Reading Room with Norman Mailer, Stanley Crouch, Larry Rivers, Daphne Merkin, Don Maggin, and Juan Goytisolo, There is no reason why good writers shouldnt take advantage of modern technology."

Barbara Probst is a photographer and contemporary artist, born in Munich in 1964. She lives and works in New York and Munich. Probst’s images use multiple points of view by employing as many as twelve cameras and tripods, arranged around the subject, to photograph multiple points of view captured in separate images but taken simultaneously with a single radio-controlled shutter release. "All of the images of a series present different views of the same place or event at the same moment." While traditional photography directs the viewer to see a single image, Probst’s sequences are composed of a series of separate, though related images incorporating multiple perspective of a single moment. Her photographs cause viewers to experience a shift in time while reconsidering their presence in physical space. "Barbara Probst embroils us in different possible interpretations; focusing on a specific moment in time… she directs our attention to the time before or after…" Her work disregards photography’s standard concept of “decisive moment,” and instead references cinema’s practice of multiple cameras to create movement and diversion.

Interviews are hosted by Mexican novelist and critic Carmen Boullosa and Chilean journalist and writer Patricio Lerzundi. The general producer is Professor Jerry Carlson, specialist in Latin American cinema. They are all members of the academic staff at CUNY. The series is produced by bilingual professionals from Colombia, Guatemala, Massachusetts, Mexico, and Texas. In addition, the series offers documentary segments about events, exhibits, concerts, and institutions.
Since its first broadcast, Nueva York has built cultural and social ties between Latinos, and amongst Spanish speaking non-Latino communities. Each episode is subtitled in English so that the largest numbers of viewers may appreciate more fully the richness and diversity of the cultural and humanitarian expression of the Spanish-speaking communities in the city. It is a television program that seeks to present the image of the social, educational and economic aspirations of the generations of immigrants and emigrants who have sought a better quality of life for themselves and their families.

Today Ms. Solomon is working at the cutting edge of the publishing business with her current literary magazine The Reading Room. Whereas in the past books and magazines were produced using expensive editorial and typesetting resources and required the dedication of capital to the warehousing of a large print run, The Reading Room is produced by the writers and printed on demand. As Saul Bellow, who had many small magazines of his own, put it when he joined the board of The Reading Room with Norman Mailer, Stanley Crouch, Larry Rivers, Daphne Merkin, Don Maggin, and Juan Goytisolo, There is no reason why good writers shouldnt take advantage of modern technology."
