Supersonic aircraft: Canadian engineer’s latest design is a Mach 24 plane Antipode - TomoNews

MONTREAL, QUEBEC — Canadian designer, Charles Bombardier, has released another commercial airliner design that promises an 11-minute trip from London to New York. The plane, named Antipode, is conceptualized to be capable of reaching 16,000 mph, traveling at Mach 24. In theory, it would be able to carry up to 10 passengers up to 12,430 miles in under an hour. Antipode comes on the heels of Bombardier’s other supersonic concept, Skreemr, released in November of last year. Skreemr was promised to be able to travel as fast as Mach 10. That makes a trip from London to New York only a 30 minute ride. “I recently created a hypersonic aircraft concept named the Skreemr. One foreseeable problem was the sonic boom noise it would generate over land and the massive amount of heat that would build up on its nose and wings,” wrote Bombardier on his company Imaginactive’s website. For Antipode, instead of Skreemr’s originally concepted launch system which includes conventional rockets to accelerate the aircraft, Bombardier, who has partnered with Lunatic Koncepts founder Abhishek Roy, designed it to launch from an electric system. The plane would then be propelled by rocket boosters fitted in its wings. Next, like Skreemr, Antipode would be powered by a scramjet engine, an engine that virtually has no moving parts. And while the concept is impressive, it is still years away from coming into fruition.
