Bjarke Ingels

Bjarke Bundgaard Ingels (born 2 October 1974) is a Danish architect. He is the founder and creative partner of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) since 2005. Known for his innovative and ambitious designs and projects, many of his buildings defy traditional architectural conventions and dimensions. His projects are often highly photogenic, ranging from representations of mountains to snowflakes. He often incorporates sustainable development ideas and sociological concepts into his designs, but tries to achieve a balance between the playful and practical approaches to architecture. His trademarks include sloped lines and designs that are shaped to their surroundings.

Amongst his works are Islands Brygge Harbour Bath, a series of five open-air swimming pools in Copenhagen Harbour (2003) and three major housing projects in Ørestad on the southern outskirts of Copenhagen: VM Houses (2005), multi-family housing in V and M shaped apartment buildings; Mountain Dwellings (2008), an extensive parking facility combined with terraced housing; and 8 House (2010), a large mixed-use housing development.

Bjarke Ingels Group

Bjarke Ingels Group, often referred to as BIG, is a Copenhagen and New York based group of architects, designers, builders and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. The office now has over 300 employees from over 25 countries in the world.

History

Bjarke Ingels established BIG in late 2005 after he and his former partner, Julien De Smedt, decided to discontinue their common practice PLOT that had gained considerable success since its establishment in 2001. His new firm continues to draw extensive national and international attention and won several international awards for its first completed commission, the Mountain, a residential project in Copenhagen which had been commenced by PLOT. Over the next couple of years, BIG won a number of international competitions and received several large commissions around the world. These include a waste-to-energy plant which doubles as a ski-slope in Copenhagen, Denmark, the West 57th Street mixed-use tower in New York for Durst Fetner Residential, the National Art Gallery of Greenland in Nuuk, headquarters for the Shenzhen Energy Company in Shenzhen, China and Kimball Art Center in Utah, USA.

Bödvar Bjarki

Bödvar Bjarki (Old Norse: Böðvar Bjarki), meaning 'Warlike Little-Bear', is the hero appearing in tales of Hrólf Kraki in the Saga of Hrólf Kraki, in the Latin epitome to the lost Skjöldunga saga, and as Biarco in Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum. Some think he and the hero Beowulf in the Old English poem Beowulf were originally the same personage, while others reject this notion.

Unlike Beowulf, Bödvar is said to have been Norwegian, which may be explained by the fact that his story was written by Icelandic authors who were mostly of Norwegian descent.

However, his brother was the king of Gautland (Geatland) and, like Beowulf, it was from Geatland that Bödvar arrived in Denmark. Moreover, upon arriving at the court of Denmark, he kills a monstrous beast that has been terrorizing the court at Yule for two years.

The famous poem Bjarkamál (of which only a few stanzas are preserved but which Saxo Grammaticus presents in the form of a florid Latin paraphrase) is understood as a dialogue between Bödvar Bjarki and his younger companion Hjalti which begins by Hjalti again and again urging Bödvar to awake from his sleep and fight for King Hrólf in this last battle in which they are doomed to be defeated. As explained in the prose, this rousing was ill-done, as Bjarki was in a trance and his spirit in the form of a monstrous bear was already aiding Hrólf far more than Bjarki could do with only his mannish strength.

Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
