Yasmin Ahmad (7 January 1958 – 25 July 2009) was a film director, writer and scriptwriter from Malaysia and was also the executive creative director at Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur. Her television commercials and films are well known in Malaysia for their humour, heart and love that crosses cross-cultural barriers, in particular her ads for Petronas, the national oil and gas company. Her works have won multiple awards both within Malaysia and internationally. However, in Malaysia itself, her films are highly controversial since they depict events and relationships seen as forbidden by social conservatives, especially hard-line interpretations of Islam.

Local filmmaker extraordinaire, Yasmin Ahmad, who touched many hearts and minds with her distinctly down-to-earth Malaysian productions passed away on July 25, after suffering a stroke and brain haemorrhage. She was 51.
The first time I met her was during a ciggy break outside Balai Seni Negara at one of her talks in conjunction with the Malaysia Video Awards. She said, "Oi!, isap rokok, bagitau mak!". Then she smiled. Padehal tak kenal pon. Through her blog, I was then regularly invited to the mini screening/gathering she had at Leo Burnett. She even lent me her camera for my first ever video work, and funded several of my projects. I made this as part of my college group project in 2006. We were bashed for making a documentary that was mostly shot on one angle and had no voice overs. It's really just sitting down and listening to her talk. Im glad I listened. Thank you for everything. AL-FATIHAH. Yasmin Ahmad (7 January 1958 -- 25 July 2009)

Since making their first appearance in 1995, Yasmin Ahmad's annual Merdeka TV commercials for Petronas have become eagerly anticipated and much-loved gems. For the latest commercial in the series, last year's Tan Hong Ming In Love, Yasmin and her crew went to schools in the Klang Valley to interview children using the theme, "Our children are colour blind, let's keep them that way". The result is a simple and candid work that charmed audiences with its young protaganist's shy declaration of love. To date, Tan Hong Ming In Love has won over 20 international awards, including the prestigious Gold Lion at the Cannes Advetising Festival 2008 last month.
