Leigh Whannell (born 17 January 1977) is an Australian screenwriter, producer, director and actor. He is best known for writing films directed by his friend James Wan, including Saw (2004), Dead Silence (2007), Death Sentence (2007), Insidious (2011) and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013). Whannell made his directorial debut on Insidious: Chapter 3, which was released in 2015.
Whannell and Wan are the creators of the Saw franchise. Whannel wrote the first installment, co-wrote the second and third installments, was producer or executive producer for all the films, and appeared as the "Adam Stanheight" character in four of the installments. He was also the writer of the Saw video game (2009), and co-writer of the 2014 film Cooties.
Whannell was born in Melbourne, Australia. He believes that he inherited his love of storytelling from his mother, and his fondness of filmmaking from his father, who was a cameraman in the television industry.
A writer since childhood, Whannell worked as a reporter and film critic for several Australian television shows, including ABC's Recovery, a Saturday morning youth-oriented program that was hosted by Dylan Lewis. Whannell has described the show in a 2011 blog post:

I live in belgium. and in belgium that have other special editions of saw. I also have the ones from amerika cause my special edition is nothing. the only thing that was on it where these little interviews and a making off. but the good thing about it is that I have something the americans don't. (or not a lot of them. I know it will be somewhere in america either.) but anyway this is one with Leigh whannell. there is another interview with him but I'm still looking where it is.

James Wan and Leigh Whannell team up to talk to us about the final Saw film, making it in 3D, and their horror movie Insidious. The interview was conducted at the 2010 SCREAM Awards.
It's been too long, too hard, too far
I know you don't know me at all
I'm screaming, I'm breathing, I'm looking up at you from the floor
I'm over, I'm under, I'm thinking that there's got to be more
And I know these days
They fade away like stealing time
Just let me be 'cause I'm alright
I'm waking up to bigger things
I'm digging, I'm clawing, I'm doing anything that I can
I'm dealing, I'm feeling that somethings got to give in the end
And I know these days
They fade away like stealing time
Don't take my place 'cause I'm alright
So kill my pain to save my pride
Just let me be 'cause I'm alright
Days, they fade away like stealing time
Don't take my place, 'cause I'm alright
So kill my pain to save my pride
Just let me be 'cause I'm alright
