Officials applauding STORYLINE: Thai officials on Wednesday held a news conference about preparations ahead of the Bangkok leg of the Olympic torch relay, saying increased security measures would be in place to try and prevent any mishaps. The Olympic torch arrives in Thailand at 2:00 a.m. on Friday morning local time (1900GMT on Thursday), but the relay will be held on Saturday. "I want to invite Thai people to join me in welcoming and celebrating the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in Thailand and to make sure that the relay runs smoothly," said General Yutthasak Sasiprapha, President of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT). "Since we have witnessed the protests in London, Paris and San Francisco, we have increased the number of security officers and expanded the area of security," he added. Thai police and military will be on hand to ensure the safe passage of the torch, officials said. It will be the first time that Thailand has participated in the Olympic torch relay. Six torchbearers have been chosen. One dropped out last month in protest over the Tibet issue. Narisa Chakrabongse said in an open letter that she decided against taking part in the relay to "send a strong message to China that the world community could not accept its actions." There have been a few protests in Thailand in support of the Tibetan demonstrations, but no violence has occurred here. The Thai government has been very supportive of the Chinese Olympic movement. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was expected to attend the evening torch ceremony. The torch will start in Chinatown, and is then expected to make stops at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Ministry of Defence, Chitralada Palace, Government House, ending up at the Royal Plaza, officials said. Tibetan groups have been holding mostly peaceful demonstrations across the globe since protests began in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, on March 10, the anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese rule. Activists disrupted torch relays in Paris, London and San Francisco. However, stops in Kazakhstan, Russia, Argentina, Tanzania, Oman and Pakistan were trouble-free.
