The Damned United is a 2009 British sports drama film directed by Tom Hooper and adapted by Peter Morgan from David Peace's bestselling novel The Damned Utd, a largely fictional book based on the author's interpretation of Brian Clough's ill-fated tenure as football manager of Leeds United in 1974. It was produced by BBC Films and Left Bank Pictures, with additional funding from Screen Yorkshire and Columbia Pictures. Sony Pictures Entertainment distributed the film. The film was originally proposed by Stephen Frears, but he pulled out of the project in November 2007. Hooper took his place and film was shot from May to July 2008. The film marks the fifth collaboration between screenwriter Peter Morgan and actor Michael Sheen, who plays Clough. The film was released in the United Kingdom on 27 March 2009, and in North America on 25 September.
After failing to qualify for the 1974 FIFA World Cup, England manager Alf Ramsey is replaced by Don Revie (Colm Meaney), the highly successful manager of Leeds United. Revie's replacement at Leeds is Brian Clough (Michael Sheen), the former manager of Derby County and a fierce critic of Leeds, because of their violent and physical style of play under Revie's management. Furthermore, Clough's longtime assistant, Peter Taylor (Timothy Spall), has not joined him.
Taking over England's top football club Leeds United, previously successful manager Brian Clough's abrasive approach and his clear dislike of the players' dirty style of play make it certain there is going to be friction. Glimpses of his earlier career help explain both his hostility to previous manager Don Revie and how much he is missing right-hand man Peter Taylor who has loyally stayed with Brighton & Hove Albion. Michael Sheen gives us a surprising look at a strange period in history for one soccer time in The Damned United, coming to theatres September 25th. Forty four days...that's all it takes for Brian Cloughs to go from manager of the champion Leeds United soccer team (or football club as it's often called) to guy out on the streets. What happened during those forty four days? Well, that's what we'll find out in The Damned United. Check out the trailer! There is something of a dearth of sports movies available on the market these days, so it may be just the right time for one to come back. But will this one be a beautiful game or a red card waiting to happen? We're short a penalty box, but the comments section below will do. So pull a diving header in and tell us what you think. T...

Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie, and on the back of their most successful period ever as a football club, Leeds was perceived by many to represent a new aggressive and cynical style of football - an anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Brian Clough, who had achieved astonishing success as manager of Hartlepool and Derby County building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor. Taking the Leeds job without Taylor by his side, with a changing room full of what in his mind were still Don's boys, would lead to an unheralded examination of Clou...

We've been playing now for much too long
And never gonna dance to a different song
I'm gonna scream and shout till my dying breath
I'm gonna smash it up till there's nothing left
Ooh smash it up
Smash it up smash it up
Ooh smash it up
Smash it up smash it up
People call me weird, oh it's such a shame
Maybe it's my clothes, must be to blame
I don't even care if I look a mess
Don't wanna be a sucker like all the rest
Smash it up
And you can keep your crystal glasses
Smash it up
And you can see a very dead-way end
Smash it up
And you can stick a frothy lager
Smash it up
Up the fuck with your lesson
We've been playing now for much too long
And never gonna dance to a different song
I'm gonna scream and shout till my dying breath
I'm gonna smash it up till there's nothing left
And everybody's smashing things down
I said everybody's smashing things down
