Edwin Sutherland
Edwin Hardin Sutherland (Gibbon, Nebraska August 13, 1883 – October 11, 1950 Bloomington, Indiana) was an American sociologist. He is considered as one of the most influential criminologists of the 20th century. He was a sociologist of the symbolic interactionist school of thought and is best known for defining white-collar crime and differential association, a general theory of crime and delinquency. Sutherland earned his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1913.
Background and early education
Sutherland grew up and studied in Ottawa, Kansas and Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1904, he received his B.A. from Grand Island College, and after that, he taught Latin, Greek, history, and shorthand for two years at Sioux Falls College in South Dakota. In 1906, he left Sioux Falls to enter graduate school at the University of Chicago from which he received his doctorate, in 1913. He changed his major from history to sociology and Political Economy. Much of his study was influenced by the Chicago school's approach to the study of crime, which emphasized social and physical environmental factors, rather than genetic or personal characteristics, as determinants of human behavior.

Sutherland
Sutherland is a county in the Highlands of Scotland. Its county town is Dornoch. It borders Caithness to the east, Ross-shire to the south and the Atlantic to the north and west.
In Gaelic the area is referred to according to its traditional areas: Dùthaich MhicAoidh (or Dùthaich 'IcAoidh) in the northeast, Asainte (Assynt) in the west, and Cataibh in the east. Cataibh is also sometimes used to refer to the area as a whole.
The name Sutherland dates from the era of Norwegian Viking rule and settlement over much of the Highlands and Islands, under the rule of the jarl of Orkney. Although it contains some of the northernmost land in the island of Great Britain, it was called Suðrland ("southern land") from the standpoint of Orkney and Caithness.
The northwest corner of Sutherland, traditionally known as the Province of Strathnaver, was not incorporated into Sutherland until 1601. This was the home of the powerful and warlike Clan Mackay, and as such was named in Gaelic, Dùthaich 'Ic Aoidh, the Homeland of Mackay. Even today this part of Sutherland is known as Mackay Country, and, unlike other areas of Scotland where the names traditionally associated with the area have become diluted, there is still a preponderance of Mackays in the Dùthaich.

Sutherland (UK Parliament constituency)
Sutherland was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918. It represented essentially the traditional county of Sutherland, electing one Member of Parliament (MP). The county town of Dornoch, however, was represented as a component of the Tain Burghs constituency, from 1708 to 1832, and of the Wick Burghs constituency, from 1832 to 1918.
In 1918 the Sutherland constituency and Dornoch were merged into the then new constituency of Caithness and Sutherland. In 1997 Caithness and Sutherland was merged into Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.

Read the tragic case of Charles Whitman who, on August 1 1966, took the life of his mother, his wife and many innocent others, before he was executed. In a letter he wrote before the tragedy unfolded, he asked to check on his brain stating that something must have gone terribly wrong inside it. An autopsy after his death revealed a large tumor inside his head. His story, if true, is testimony that not only the environment, but also biological causes may be responsible for crimes that happen.

Neste pequeno vídeo, eu comento um pouco sobre a vida e obra de Edwin Sutherland, um dos maiores criminólogos de todos os tempos.
Edwin Hardin Sutherland (nascido em 13 de Agosto de 1883 em Gibbon, Nebraska – falecido em 11 de Outubro de 1950 em Bloomington, Indiana) é considerado, ainda, o maior expoente da Criminologia norte-americana.
Seu livro Criminologia, lançado inicialmente em 1924 , e a partir de meados dos anos 30, passando a se chamar "Princípios de Criminologia", é uma de suas obras mais importantes.
Sutherland começou seus estudos em Chicago, mudou de trabalho algumas vezes e fixou uma grande parte da sua vida na Universidade de Indiana.
Dois episódios chama a atenção em sua carreira como criminólogo: o debate sobre o Documento Michael-Adler (de 1933) e o debate Glueck-Sutherland, que já foi objeto de outro vídeo aqui no canal.
Sutherland desenvolveu a teoria da associação diferencial e a dos crimes do colarinho branco.
Faleceu, em 1950, sem ver sua obra sobre crimes do colarinho branco (white collar crimes) ser publicada com o nome das empresas envolvidas nas falcatruas.

Read the tragic case of Charles Whitman who, on August 1 1966, took the life of his mother, his wife and many innocent others, before he was executed. In a letter he wrote before the tragedy unfolded, he asked to check on his brain stating that something must have gone terribly wrong inside it. An autopsy after his death revealed a large tumor inside his head. His story, if true, is testimony that not only the environment, but also biological causes may be responsible for crimes that happen.

In this video, I discuss differential association theory as it was introduced to sociology and criminology by Edwin Sutherland. The perspective is one of the great examples of an influential theory that explains crime and deviance. It is often used to explain youth violence, juvenile delinquency, and gang membership, but also white collar crime. One of its main principles is based on social learning ideas, namely that criminal behavior is learned. The theory’s components are explained in more detail in sociologist and criminologist Edwin Sutherland’s book “Principles of Criminology”.
In this video, I focus on the definition, hypothesis, and meaning of this criminological theory. I also discuss the limitations, strengths, and weaknesses of the differential association perspective and the elements that have caused discussion and criticism.

Edwin H. Sutherland (born August 13, 1883, Gibbon, Nebraska, U.S. died October 11, 1950, Bloomington, Indiana) was an American sociologist. He is considered as one of the most influential criminologists of the twentieth century. He was a sociologist of the symbolic interactionist school of thought and is best known for defining differential association which is a general theory of crime and delinquency that explains how deviants come to learn the motivations and the technical knowledge for deviant or criminal activity. Sutherland earned his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1913.

Edwin Sutherland
Edwin Hardin Sutherland (Gibbon, Nebraska August 13, 1883 – October 11, 1950 Bloomington, Indiana) was an American sociologist. He is considered as one of the most influential criminologists of the 20th century. He was a sociologist of the symbolic interactionist school of thought and is best known for defining white-collar crime and differential association, a general theory of crime and delinquency. Sutherland earned his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1913.
Background and early education
Sutherland grew up and studied in Ottawa, Kansas and Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1904, he received his B.A. from Grand Island College, and after that, he taught Latin, Greek, history, and shorthand for two years at Sioux Falls College in South Dakota. In 1906, he left Sioux Falls to enter graduate school at the University of Chicago from which he received his doctorate, in 1913. He changed his major from history to sociology and Political Economy. Much of his study was influenced by the Chicago school's approach to the study of crime, which emphasized social and physical environmental factors, rather than genetic or personal characteristics, as determinants of human behavior.
