This is a short video that looks at the so-called "dark figure" of crime - crimes that are committed in our society but which never appear in the official recorded crime statistics. As such the video looks at methodological questions (reliability and validity, for example) surrounding our use of official crime statistics.

If you look up statistics (you know, fact-based research) you'll fined a lot of times races normally do not commit crimes at equal rates. Does this matter? No. What matters is the conditions people are subjected to. Where they are raised, how they are raised, do they have both parents? Is the family upper class, middle class or?
A lot of things factor into whether or not someone will turn to crime... race? Not the point.
Now gender, there's something that actually has a physical explanation. Men are literally built differently than women, so if you want to point a finger at a physical makeup, it's not skin that is relevant, it's brain activity.

Black people in the United States are more likely to be victims of violent confrontations with police officers than whites because they commit more violent crimes than whites per capita.
Until black political leaders, protest organizers and white liberal media outlets make these facts part of the conversation, one of the primary driving factors behind police brutality will never be addressed.

Crime Rates

Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit mur-
der, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.
•
When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely
than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.
•
Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and
Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate.
•
The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of
the population that is black and Hispanic.
Interracial Crime
•
Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involv-
ing blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.
•
Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-
five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are black, and 10 percent are
Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are
black.
•
Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against
a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.
•
Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes
against whites than vice versa.
Gangs
•
Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white.
•
Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs.
Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely.
Incarceration
•
Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139
to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39
million.

Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are
three times more likely.

Crime statistics attempt to provide statistical measures of the crime in societies. Given that crime is usually secretive by nature, measurements of it are likely to be inaccurate.
Several methods for measuring crime exist, including household surveys, hospital or insurance records, and compilations by police and similar law enforcement agencies. Typically official crime statistics are the latter, but some offences are likely to go unreported to the police. Public surveys are sometimes conducted to estimate the amount of crime not reported to police. Such surveys are usually more reliable for assessing trends. Public surveys rarely encompass all crime, rarely procure statistics useful for local crime prevention, often ignore offences against children, and do not count offenders brought before the criminal justice system.
Crime statistics are gathered and reported by many countries and are of interest to several international organizations, including Interpol and the United Nations. Law enforcement agencies in some countries, such as the FBI in the United States and the Home Office in England & Wales, publish crime indices, which are compilations of statistics for various types of crime.

Donald James "Don" Weatherburn PSM (born 14 May 1951) has been Director of the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research in Sydney since 1988 and is an Adjunct Professor with the School of Social Science and Policy at the University of New South Wales.
Weatherburn attended Newington College (1964-1969) and the University of Sydney where in 1974 he received his BA with first class honours. He completed a Ph.D in 1979 and lectured in the School of Justice Administration at Charles Sturt University.
In 1983 Weatherburn was appointed Senior Research Officer at the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research and four years later he was appointed Foundation Director of Research at the NSW Judicial Commission. He has held his current position since 1988.
For his long and dedicated service, he was award the Public Service Medal in January 1998.

No. What matters is the conditions people are subjected to. Where they are raised, how they are raised, do they have both parents? Is the family upper class, middle class or?
A lot of things factor into whether or not someone will turn to crime... race? Not the point.
Now gender, there's something that actually has a physical explanation. Men are literally built differently than women, so if you want to point a finger at a physical makeup, it's not skin that is relevant, it's brain activity.

MARTIN: The FBI reports that about 20 percent of hate crimes are committed by African-Americans. And does that mean anything, or does that information have some bearing on the this in some way?
Mr. POTOK: Well, the FBI statistics are notoriously shaky, through no fault of their own. It's a voluntary reporting system. The numbers are known to be extremely weak. That said, I think they are indicative of something. What the numbers show is, as you suggested, is almost 21 percent of hate crimes, according to FBI numbers, are committed by black Americans, who comprise about 13 percent of the population. About 58 percent are committed by whites, who makeup about 80 percent of the population.
So the FBI statistics do suggest that blacks commit hate crimes at a somewhat higher level than whites. And that is very possibly true. We really can't know that because the FBI stats are so incomplete.
