How To Do Gym Chic On & Off The Treadmill

Style Editor AISLINN COFFEY answers the recurring fashion dilemma: How can I look GYM-CHIC in and out of the gym?

The secret to wearing sportswear is
layering and the aim is to look as good as you make your way from the gym in your cover-up top and sweatpants as you do during your workout.

Comfort is key, of course, but keeping the look streamlined is imperative, no matter what size you wear. Velour bottoms or baggy leggings with your oldest T-shirts just don’t cut it anymore.

There’s lots of new gym-spiration from the big brands like Nike and Adidas (Adidas by Stella McCartney is particularly good). On the high street, American Apparel, TK Maxx (look out for Stella McCartney pieces at the Carrickmines branch) and Marks & Spencer do sportswear really well, and layering workout vest tops (don’t opt for cropped) from Danceworld (www.danceworld.ie) with yoga pants is always an easy option.

But, for the gym bunnies who prefer something more  high fashion, look to British brand Lucas Hugh (www.lucashugh.com) or Victoria Beckham, who has produced some super-soft T-shirts, track pants and shorts as part of her Denim line.

Workout clothes don’t get more luxe than this. On the net, www.lucy.com, www.lululemon.com and www.sweatybetty.com are worth a look. Sweaty Betty’s capes are a cosy hide-all to pop on as you run errands after the gym and remember not to neglect your workout bag.

The Best? Stella McCartney’s Croc-effect neoprene backpack with lashings of chunky silver hardware (it double-jobs as a handbag) or a black statement nylon holdall from Sweaty Betty.
