How We Live was a project between Steve Hogarth and Colin Woore, respectively the keyboard player and guitarist of the new wave band The Europeans. They released one album, Dry Land, in 1987 with Hogarth on vocals, before Hogarth replaced Fish as Marillion's vocalist in 1989. Marillion covered the title track of Dry Land on their 1991 album Holidays In Eden and released it as the third single from the album. The vocal melody of another, unreleased How We Live song titled "Simon's Car" was used for "Cover My Eyes (Pain and Heaven)", the first single from Holidays in Eden.
They were doing great they were young and keen, And
they sip root beer on the mezzanine
Coz they settled for less than they wanted
It was looking good, moving right along, They were
their own people singing their own song
But they settled for less than they wanted
CHORUS 1
How many people are making plans, no-one else can
understand
How many times can a joker beat an ace
How does it happen, where does it go, You fire it up,
then the engine blows, it's like
Someone turned a light off, I suppose...
VERSE 2
Picking the numbers, making the plans
The future was held in their very hands
But they settled for less than they wanted
VERSE 3
He was gonna be big, gonna be a star, But he married a
pig cos she had a car
And they settled for less than they wanted
He promised her kids and a bigger house, But soon the
man became a mouse
And they settled for less than they wanted
CHORUS 2
Up in the morning and off to work, Lifting the load for
any jerk
What ever happened to all the plans you had?
Where's the view, where's the dream, You say you got
tired, but what you mean
Is you got too lazy to stand up straight and scream
VERSE 4
He had an affair, with the au-pair
They couldn't be happy, they didn't care
So they settled for less than they wanted (Oh yeah...)
CHORUS 1
How many people are making plans, no-one else can
understand
How many times can a joker beat an ace
How does it happen, where does it go, You fire it up,
then the engine blows, it's like
Someone turned a light off, I suppose...
VERSE 5
What happened to Billy, what happened to Jane
Will I ever hang out with the gang again
Coz they settled for less than they wanted
They were doing great, they were young and keen
And they sip root beer on the mezzanine
Coz they settled for less than they wanted (Oh yeah...)
