A dysfunctional family's reunion at a lake house in Northern Ontario descends into chaos, in this ensemble comedy-drama from Canadian director Andrew Currie (Fido), starring James Brolin, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Christine Lahti and Jason Ritter.
Residents of Canada and the United States generally take a certain pride in sharing the world's longest unprotected border. Close to the surface, though, lie repressed resentments and frustrations, and these are amusingly assessed within the microcosm of this step-family comedy-drama from director Andrew Currie.
As The Steps opens, we meet failed investment banker Jeff (Jason Ritter) and his party-animal sister Marla (Emmanuelle Chriqui), New Yorkers who've been invited by their publishing-magnate father, Ed (James Brolin), to visit his cottage in Northern Ontario. They're infuriated, terrified and appalled — to them, Canada is even a bigger wasteland than Wyoming. Since their father married Sherry (Christine Lahti), a woman with a chequered past and children by three different men, they've been worried they may never see any of their father's fortune.
Jeff and Marla head for Georgian Bay and find that things are worse than anticipated. Sherry's crew of offspring would have to step up their game seriously just to reach the "motley" level. Keith (Steven McCarthy) is an unemployed musician who was kicked out of the emerging band and he was in; Samir (Vinay Virmani) is a pot dealer and full-time stoner; and though eldest son David (Benjamin Arthur) may have the second-largest paintball field in all of Ontario, he also seems to have fairly serious rage issues. And now Sherry and Ed are planning on a few changes to their family that may leave Jeff and Marla out in the cold.
Mocking peculiar obsessions and peccadilloes on both sides of the border, Currie (who made the memorable zombie comedy Fido, which premiered at the Festival in 2006) and his fine cast have an enormous amount of fun skewering everything from Americans' less appealing dietary habits to Canada's love of Nickelback. Brolin and Lahti have an enormous amount of fun as love-struck newlyweds, as do Ritter and Chriqui as Ed's snotty and entitled kids, and the supporting cast attacks their roles with gusto (especially Arthur as always-angry Canadian nationalist David). As lingering bitterness and current disappointments wreak havoc in the cottage and disaster looms, threatening even Ed and Sherry's idyllic happiness, these strangers slowly, and hilariously, figure out how to become a family.

Christine Ann Lahti (born April 4, 1950) is an American actress and film director. Throughout her career, she has garnered 2 Golden Globe Awards from 8 nominations, an Emmy Award from 6 nominations and 2 Academy Award nominations. Her first Academy Award nomination was for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 1984 film Swing Shift. Her second nomination was for her work as a director when she won the Academy Award for Short Film, Live Action for her 1995 film Lieberman in Love.
Lahti was born in Birmingham, Michigan, the daughter of Elizabeth Margaret (née Tabar), a painter, homemaker, and nurse, and Paul Theodore Lahti, a surgeon. Her paternal grandparents were Finnish immigrants and her maternal grandparents were from Austria-Hungary. Her surname means "a gulf", "a bay" or "a cove" in Finnish, and Lahti is also a city in Finland. Lahti was raised Lutheran.
Lahti studied fine arts at Florida State University and received her bachelor's degree in drama from the University of Michigan, where she joined Delta Gamma sorority.

Residents of Canada and the United States generally take a certain pride in sharing the world's longest unprotected border. Close to the surface, though, lie repressed resentments and frustrations, and these are amusingly assessed within the microcosm of this step-family comedy-drama from director Andrew Currie.
As The Steps opens, we meet failed investment banker Jeff (Jason Ritter) and his party-animal sister Marla (Emmanuelle Chriqui), New Yorkers who've been invited by their publishing-magnate father, Ed (James Brolin), to visit his cottage in Northern Ontario. They're infuriated, terrified and appalled — to them, Canada is even a bigger wasteland than Wyoming. Since their father married Sherry (Christine Lahti), a woman with a chequered past and children by three different men, they've been worried they may never see any of their father's fortune.
Jeff and Marla head for Georgian Bay and find that things are worse than anticipated. Sherry's crew of offspring would have to step up their game seriously just to reach the "motley" level. Keith (Steven McCarthy) is an unemployed musician who was kicked out of the emerging band and he was in; Samir (Vinay Virmani) is a pot dealer and full-time stoner; and though eldest son David (Benjamin Arthur) may have the second-largest paintball field in all of Ontario, he also seems to have fairly serious rage issues. It starred Kris Kristofferson, Mariel Hemingway, Sam Neill, Robert Urich, and a 17-year-old Lara Flynn Boyle in her first major role. "Amerika" was about life in the United States after a bloodless takeover by the Soviet Union. Not wanting to depict the actual coup, ABC Entertainment president Brandon Stoddard instead chose to set the action of the miniseries ten years after the event, focusing on the demoralized American people a decade after the Soviet conquest. The intent, he later explained, was to explore the American spirit under such conditions, not to portray the conflict of the Soviet takeover.
Described in promotional materials as "the most ambitious American miniseries ever created," Amerika aired for 14½ hours (including commercials) over seven nights, and reportedly cost US$40 million to produce. The program was filmed in Toronto, London, and Hamilton, Ontario, as well as various locations in Nebraska -- most notably the small town of Tecumseh and Milford, the setting for most of the action of the series. Donald Wrye was the executive producer, director, and sole writer of Amerika, while composer Basil Poledouris was hired to score the miniseries, ultimately recording (with the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra) eight hours of music -- the equivalent of four feature films. Kris: Yeah. Now, what's been going on lately could cause that - to the rest of the world to just finally just say, "Listen, you got no right to be the only superpower of the world, going around fighting anybody you want to in whatever name you want to call it". I mean, they look at what we did in Iraq as terrorism. And it was state-sponsored terrorism, you know? A dysfunctional family's reunion at a lake house in Northern Ontario descends into chaos, in this ensemble comedy-drama from Canadian director Andrew Currie (Fido), starring James Brolin, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Christine Lahti and Jason Ritter.
Residents of Canada and the United States generally take a certain pride in sharing the world's longest unprotected border. Close to the surface, though, lie repressed resentments and frustrations, and these are amusingly assessed within the microcosm of this step-family comedy-drama from director Andrew Currie.
As The Steps opens, we meet failed investment banker Jeff (Jason Ritter) and his party-animal sister Marla (Emmanuelle Chriqui), New Yorkers who've been invited by their publishing-magnate father, Ed (James Brolin), to visit his cottage in Northern Ontario. They're infuriated, terrified and appalled — to them, Canada is even a bigger wasteland than Wyoming. Since their father married Sherry (Christine Lahti), a woman with a chequered past and children by three different men, they've been worried they may never see any of their father's fortune.
Jeff and Marla head for Georgian Bay and find that things are worse than anticipated. Sherry's crew of offspring would have to step up their game seriously just to reach the "motley" level. Keith (Steven McCarthy) is an unemployed musician who was kicked out of the emerging band and he was in; Samir (Vinay Virmani) is a pot dealer and full-time stoner; and though eldest son David (Benjamin Arthur) may have the second-largest paintball field in all of Ontario, he also seems to have fairly serious rage issues. And now Sherry and Ed are planning on a few changes to their family that may leave Jeff and Marla out in the cold.
Mocking peculiar obsessions and peccadilloes on both sides of the border, Currie (who made the memorable zombie comedy Fido, which premiered at the Festival in 2006) and his fine cast have an enormous amount of fun skewering everything from Americans' less appealing dietary habits to Canada's love of Nickelback. Brolin and Lahti have an enormous amount of fun as love-struck newlyweds, as do Ritter and Chriqui as Ed's snotty and entitled kids, and the supporting cast attacks their roles with gusto (especially Arthur as always-angry Canadian nationalist David). As lingering bitterness and current disappointments wreak havoc in the cottage and disaster looms, threatening even Ed and Sherry's idyllic happiness, these strangers slowly, and hilariously, figure out how to become a family.

Jeff Stabler, a former financial planner from New York, has lost everything: his apartment, his job, and his fiancée. Then he gets a call from his party-girl sister Marla, telling him that their wealthy dad, Ed, eloped with a fifty-something cocktail waitress, who Marla thinks is a gold digger. Ed has asked them to come up to a new opulent lake house in Northern Ontario to meet their new step family and hear a big announcement.
Jeff and Marla arrive to find their conservative dad in the midst of an oily, tantric massage session with new bride, Sherry. And, it’s all downhill from there. Sherry’s kids arrive: David (an energy drink-guzzling owner of Ballz! a paintball company); his sweet and simple wife, Tammy; brother, Keith (a depressed musician wearing a SCRAM bracelet); and Sherry’s youngest, Sam (a genius of Indian descent).
Ed and Sherry announce their plans to adopt Mingmei, a seven year-old orphaned girl from China. On Monday, a social worker will arrive to interview them, so Sherry’s planned a weekend of bonding activities designed to turn them into a happy, loving family. But that’s easier said than done. And when Jeff discovers that his stepmom has been keeping a scandalous secret, the family could be destroyed forever. Of course, Jeff has been keeping a few secrets of his own…
The Steps is the story of two disparate families, with all their issues and baggage, learning to come together over the course of a weekend.

Over the past two months, at least eight wooden boats have been found in the Sea of Japan on or near the coast, carrying a chilling cargo -- the decaying bodies of 20 people, Japan's coast guard told CNN.
