If you've seen our previous 2 videos about flushing RV water heaters, you'll know we've talked quite a bit about anode rods. Generally, Suburban brand water heaters require an anode rod to protect the steel tank from corrosion. The rod is made of a metal that sacrifices itself, so that corrosion will attack the rod before attacking the steel tank. Atwood brand water heaters generally don't use anodes because their tanks are made of aluminum.
After watching this update, you'll know why we highly recommend using the Suburban OEM magnesium anode rod. They're not expensive, and you can find them here:

We have a Suburban heater, and a problem arose when, after only one year, our original equipment anode was rusted into place so badly that we almost couldn't remove it. We actually ended up breaking a socket wrench in the process.
As a result, we installed an aftermarket anode with brass threads, that screws into an outer brass sleeve. The brass-on-brass design made it (pardon the pun) a lock to unscrew easily. Even though the OEM anode is magnesium, and the aftermarket rod was zinc and aluminum, it should still have worked properly, as those metals should still corrode before the tank did.
In carrying out its sole purpose (prolonging tank life), an anode should decay a considerable amount. We used the aftermarket rod for two full years (with an inspection at the halfway point) and it didn't look much different than when it was new.
So, last year we opted to go back to an original Suburban anode, choosing to run the risk of being unable to remove it, over the risk of the early demise of our water heater. Although we're running late on our spring maintenance tasks this year, 16 months later... the results are in.
First, the OEM rod came out easily, without a problem. Second, the OEM rod sacrificed itself the way it's supposed to. When we look at them side-by-side, it's a no-brainer which one we'll rely on to protect our Suburban water heater from now on.
Here's what Suburban has to say about anodes:
"All Suburban water heaters are protected by a magnesium or aluminum anode to prolong the life of the tank. Under normal use, the anode rod will deteriorate. Because of this, we recommend it be replaced annually or when consumption or weight loss of the rod is greater than 75%. Note: Water with high levels of iron and/or sulfate will increase the rate of deterioration. To extend anode life, drain water from tank whenever the RV is not being used. Avoid any extended time of non-use with water in the tank."

This is a short description of how I changed the anode rod of my water heater. The second part of the seminar describes the theory behind how an anode rod may prolong the life of a water heater, by using a natural galvanic reaction to slow rust formation.
On a related topic, consider reviewing my other video describing how to replace the dip tube of a water heater. These two might be conveniently replaced at the same time.
Maintenance of a water heater involves risk of personal injury and possible damage to personal property. Done improperly, there is a significant risk of scalding injury, and if the new rod does not seal properly you could be witness to secondary water damage to your home. If the anode replacement does not go as planned, your water heater and your home could be permanently damaged. This is not a comprehensive instructional video, and I am not a professional plumber. If you decide to replace your anode rod, you do so at your own personal risk.

A quick video showing how to replace the sacrificial anode rod inside a typical hot water heating tank. This procedure is essentially the same for most if not all gas and electric water heaters. The anode rod (typically made from aluminum/zinc or magnesium) slowly dissolves away due to galvanic corrosion that exists within the water and the steel water tank. As the rod depletes the steel tank is left alone until there is no more sacrificial metal to eat away at. Anode rods typically will last anywhere between 3-15 years depending on water conditions. The tank in the video is over 14 years old and the original anode rod was surprisingly intact! Anodes can be found at Home Depot, Lowes or other home improvement stores at a cost of about $20-25. They can vary in length and composition but the key thing to remember is that you don't want to buy a rod that is tool long and you don't want to leave the service interval of the rod to be too long. If there is no anode then there is no protection for your water tank against corrosion. Just replacing the anode on a regular basis can add years to your water heater.
Typical tools you'll need include:
Flat bladed screwdriver (to open water tank drain valve).
1 1/16" or 27mm 6 point socket to remove anode
1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar
Pipe to put onto end of ratchet or breaker bar to give you more leverage
Plumber's teflon tape or paste
Drain hose to attach to tank drain spigot
New anode rod (length and material used is dependent on height of tank and type of water conditions in your area)
Matches if you need to re-light your tank's gas fired pilot
A helper to hold the water tank while you break the anode rod loose

An anode is an electrode through which electric current flows into a polarized electrical device. The direction of electric current is, by convention, opposite to the direction of electron flow. In other words, the electrons flow from the anode into, for example, an electrical circuit. Mnemonic: ACID (Anode Current Into Device).
A widespread misconception is that anode polarity is always positive (+). This is often incorrectly inferred from the correct fact that in all electrochemical devices negatively charged anions move towards the anode (hence their name) and positively charged cations move away from it. In fact anode polarity depends on the device type, and sometimes even in which mode it operates, as per the above electric current direction-based universal definition. Consequently, as can be seen from the following examples, in a device which consumes power the anode is positive, and in a device which provides power the anode is negative:
An electrode through which current flows the other way (out of the device) is termed a cathode.

If you've seen our previous 2 videos about flushing RV water heaters, you'll know we've talked quite a bit about anode rods. Generally, Suburban brand water heaters require an anode rod to protect the steel tank from corrosion. The rod is made of a metal that sacrifices itself, so that corrosion will attack the rod before attacking the steel tank. Atwood brand water heaters generally don't use anodes because their tanks are made of aluminum. How to Replace A Water Heater Sacrificial Anode Rod
A quick video showing how to replace the sacrificial anode rod inside a typical hot water heating tank. This procedure is essentially the same for most if not all gas and electric water heaters. The anode rod (typically made from aluminum/zinc or magnesium) slowly dissolves away due to galvanic corrosion that exists within the water and the steel water tank. As the rod depletes the steel tank is left alone until there is no more sacrificial metal to eat away at. Anode rods typically will last anywhere between 3-15 years depending on water conditions. If you've seen our previous 2 videos about flushing RV water heaters, you'll know we've talked quite a bit about anode rods. Generally, Suburban brand water heaters require an anode rod to protect the steel tank from corrosion. The rod is made of a metal that sacrifices itself, so that corrosion will attack the rod before attacking the steel tank. Atwood brand water heaters generally don't use anodes because their tanks are made of aluminum.
After watching this update, you'll know why we highly recommend using the Suburban OEM magnesium anode rod. They're not expensive, and you can find them here:

We have a Suburban heater, and a problem arose when, after only one year, our original equipment anode was rusted into place so badly that we almost couldn't remove it. We actually ended up breaking a socket wrench in the process.
As a result, we installed an aftermarket anode with brass threads, that screws into an outer brass sleeve. The brass-on-brass design made it (pardon the pun) a lock to unscrew easily. Even though the OEM anode is magnesium, and the aftermarket rod was zinc and aluminum, it should still have worked properly, as those metals should still corrode before the tank did.
In carrying out its sole purpose (prolonging tank life), an anode should decay a considerable amount. We used the aftermarket rod for two full years (with an inspection at the halfway point) and it didn't look much different than when it was new.
So, last year we opted to go back to an original Suburban anode, choosing to run the risk of being unable to remove it, over the risk of the early demise of our water heater. Although we're running late on our spring maintenance tasks this year, 16 months later... the results are in.
First, the OEM rod came out easily, without a problem. Second, the OEM rod sacrificed itself the way it's supposed to. When we look at them side-by-side, it's a no-brainer which one we'll rely on to protect our Suburban water heater from now on.
Here's what Suburban has to say about anodes:
"All Suburban water heaters are protected by a magnesium or aluminum anode to prolong the life of the tank. Under normal use, the anode rod will deteriorate. Because of this, we recommend it be replaced annually or when consumption or weight loss of the rod is greater than 75%. Note: Water with high levels of iron and/or sulfate will increase the rate of deterioration. To extend anode life, drain water from tank whenever the RV is not being used. Avoid any extended time of non-use with water in the tank."

Flat bladed screwdriver (to open water tank drain valve).
1 1/16" or 27mm 6 point socket to remove anode
1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar
Pipe to put onto end of ratchet or breaker bar to give you more leverage
Plumber's teflon tape or paste
Drain hose to attach to tank drain spigot
New anode rod (length and material used is dependent on height of tank and type of water conditions in your area)
Matches if you need to re-light your tank's gas fired pilot
A helper to hold the water tank while you break the anode rod loose

Matches if you need to re-light your tank's gas fired pilot
A helper to hold the water tank while you break the anode rod loose
