Notes: Let’s state the obvious here: this is not the commercial version of powdered alcohol. It’s a very DIY version that was suggested by Popular Science (see link below). The version that is slated to go on sale this summer will almost certainly use a higher proof alcohol (151 is as high as we could legally get in California), so it’ll be a bit more efficient. There’s also a strong chance that it will use a cyclodextrin powder instead of the maltodextrin we used. Cyclodextrin is essentially a ring of sugar molecules that can trip liquids inside. Right now food-grade cyclodextrin is very difficult to find for consumers and it’s quite expensive, so we went with maltodextrin. We acknowledge that there’s a chance that cyclodextrin would dissolve a bit faster, but we maintain that it would still be prohibitively slow for spiking a drink. Everything else basically holds true. For the snorting section, for instance, that is the real quantity you would need to get one drink’s worth.

In chemistry, an alcohol is an organic compound in which the hydroxyl functional group (-OH) is bound to a carbon atom. In particular, this carbon center should be saturated, having single bonds to three other atoms.
An important class of alcohols are the simple acyclic alcohols, the general formula for which is CnH2n+1OH. Of those, ethanol (C2H5OH) is the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, and in common speech the word alcohol refers specifically to ethanol.
Other alcohols are usually described with a clarifying adjective, as in isopropyl alcohol (propan-2-ol) or wood alcohol (methyl alcohol, or methanol). The suffix -ol appears in the IUPAC chemical name of all substances where the hydroxyl group is the functional group with the highest priority; in substances where a higher priority group is present the prefix hydroxy- will appear in the IUPAC name. The suffix -ol in non-systematic names (such as paracetamol or cholesterol) also typically indicates that the substance includes a hydroxyl functional group and, so, can be termed an alcohol. But many substances, particularly sugars (examples glucose and sucrose) contain hydroxyl functional groups without using the suffix.

People are freaking out about powdered alcohol, but I wasn’t convinced they understood the science behind it. So I tested their concerns. Will it get you crazy drunk? Will people snort it? It’s a very DIY version that was suggested by Popular Science (see link below). The version that is slated to go on sale this summer will almost certainly use a higher proof alcohol (151 is as high as we could legally get in California), so it’ll be a bit more efficient. There’s also a strong chance that it will use a cyclodextrin powder instead of the maltodextrin we used. Cyclodextrin is essentially a ring of sugar molecules that can trip liquids inside. Right now food-grade cyclodextrin is very difficult to find for consumers and it’s quite expensive, so we went with maltodextrin. We acknowledge that there’s a chance that cyclodextrin would dissolve a bit faster, but we maintain that it would still be prohibitively slow for spiking a drink. Everything else basically holds true. For the snorting section, for instance, that is the real quantity you would need to get one drink’s worth. Notes: Let’s state the obvious here: this is not the commercial version of powdered alcohol. It’s a very DIY version that was suggested by Popular Science (see link below). The version that is slated to go on sale this summer will almost certainly use a higher proof alcohol (151 is as high as we could legally get in California), so it’ll be a bit more efficient. There’s also a strong chance that it will use a cyclodextrin powder instead of the maltodextrin we used. Cyclodextrin is essentially a ring of sugar molecules that can trip liquids inside. Right now food-grade cyclodextrin is very difficult to find for consumers and it’s quite expensive, so we went with maltodextrin. We acknowledge that there’s a chance that cyclodextrin would dissolve a bit faster, but we maintain that it would still be prohibitively slow for spiking a drink. Everything else basically holds true. For the snorting section, for instance, that is the real quantity you would need to get one drink’s worth.

El alcohólico no tiene control sobre los límites de su consumo y suele ir elevando a lo largo del tiempo su grado de tolerancia al alcohol
Los tratamientos contra el alcoholismo incluyen programas de desintoxicación realizados por instituciones médicas. Esto puede suponer la estancia del paciente durante un periodo indeterminado, (quizás varias semanas), bajo tutela en hospitales especializados donde puede que se utilicen determinados medicamentos para evitar el síndrome de abstinencia.
Después del período de desintoxicación, puede someterse al paciente a diversos métodos de terapia de grupo o psicoterapia para tratar problemas psicológicos de fondo que hayan podido llevar al paciente a la dependencia. Se puede asimismo apoyar el programa con terapias que inciten al paciente a repugnar el alcohol mediante fármacos como el disulfiram, que provoca fuertes y repentinas resacas siempre que se consuma alcohol.
La terapia nutricional es otro tratamiento. Muchos alcohólicos tienen síndrome de resistencia a la insulina, un desorden metabólico debido al cual el cuerpo no regula correctamente el azúcar causando un suministro inestable a la circulación sanguínea.[cita requerida] Aunque este desorden se puede tratar con una dieta hipoglucémica, esto puede afectar a su comportamiento y su estado anímico. Estos síntomas son efectos secundarios que se observan a menudo en alcohólicos sometidos bajo tratamiento de desintoxicación. Los aspectos metabólicos del alcoholismo a menudo se pasan por alto dando como resultado tratamientos de dudosos resultados.
En los años 1990, los grupos de consultas de autoayuda fueron adquiriendo notoriedad por sus logros, como lo ha sido el movimiento de Alcohólicos Anónimos.

Si bien el proceso degenerativo tiende a acortar los plazos entre cada ingesta.
El consumo excesivo y prolongado de esta sustancia va obligando al organismo a necesitar o requerir cantidades crecientes para sentir los mismos efectos, a esto se le llama "tolerancia aumentada" y desencadena un mecanismo adaptativo del cuerpo hasta que llega a un límite en el que se invierte la supuesta resistencia y entonces "asimila menos", por eso tolerar más alcohol es en sí un riesgo de alcoholización.
Las defunciones por accidentes relacionados con el alcohol (choques, atropellamientos y suicidios) ocupan los primeros lugares entre las causas de muerte en muchos países. Por ejemplo, en España se considera que el consumo de alcohol-etanol causa más de 100 mil muertes al año, entre intoxicaciones por borrachera y accidentes de tráfico.3
A su vez, la Secretaría de Salud de México reporta que el abuso del alcohol se relaciona con el 70% de las muertes por accidentes de tránsito y es la principal causa de fallecimiento entre los 15 y 30 años de edad. Se estima que 27 mil mexicanos mueren cada año por accidentes de tránsito y la mayoría se debe a que se encontraban bajo los efectos del alcohol.

El alcoholismo es una enfermedad que consiste en padecer una fuerte necesidad de ingerir alcohol etílico, de forma que existe una dependencia física del mismo, manifestada a través de determinados síntomas de abstinencia cuando no es posible su ingesta. El alcohólico no tiene control sobre los límites de su consumo y suele ir elevando a lo largo del tiempo su grado de tolerancia al alcohol
Los tratamientos contra el alcoholismo incluyen programas de desintoxicación realizados por instituciones médicas. Esto puede suponer la estancia del paciente durante un periodo indeterminado, (quizás varias semanas), bajo tutela en hospitales especializados donde puede que se utilicen determinados medicamentos para evitar el síndrome de abstinencia.
Después del período de desintoxicación, puede someterse al paciente a diversos métodos de terapia de grupo o psicoterapia para tratar problemas psicológicos de fondo que hayan podido llevar al paciente a la dependencia. Se puede asimismo apoyar el programa con terapias que inciten al paciente a repugnar el alcohol mediante fármacos como el disulfiram, que provoca fuertes y repentinas resacas siempre que se consuma alcohol.
La terapia nutricional es otro tratamiento. Muchos alcohólicos tienen síndrome de resistencia a la insulina, un desorden metabólico debido al cual el cuerpo no regula correctamente el azúcar causando un suministro inestable a la circulación sanguínea.[cita requerida] Aunque este desorden se puede tratar con una dieta hipoglucémica, esto puede afectar a su comportamiento y su estado anímico. Estos síntomas son efectos secundarios que se observan a menudo en alcohólicos sometidos bajo tratamiento de desintoxicación. Los aspectos metabólicos del alcoholismo a menudo se pasan por alto dando como resultado tratamientos de dudosos resultados.
En los años 1990, los grupos de consultas de autoayuda fueron adquiriendo notoriedad por sus logros, como lo ha sido el movimiento de Alcohólicos Anónimos.

Si bien el proceso degenerativo tiende a acortar los plazos entre cada ingesta.
El consumo excesivo y prolongado de esta sustancia va obligando al organismo a necesitar o requerir cantidades crecientes para sentir los mismos efectos, a esto se le llama "tolerancia aumentada" y desencadena un mecanismo adaptativo del cuerpo hasta que llega a un límite en el que se invierte la supuesta resistencia y entonces "asimila menos", por eso tolerar más alcohol es en sí un riesgo de alcoholización.
Las defunciones por accidentes relacionados con el alcohol (choques, atropellamientos y suicidios) ocupan los primeros lugares entre las causas de muerte en muchos países. Por ejemplo, en España se considera que el consumo de alcohol-etanol causa más de 100 mil muertes al año, entre intoxicaciones por borrachera y accidentes de tráfico.3
A su vez, la Secretaría de Salud de México reporta que el abuso del alcohol se relaciona con el 70% de las muertes por accidentes de tránsito y es la principal causa de fallecimiento entre los 15 y 30 años de edad. Se estima que 27 mil mexicanos mueren cada año por accidentes de tránsito y la mayoría se debe a que se encontraban bajo los efectos del alcohol.
