Residents are not allowing garbage-ladenlorries into the waste treatment plant

Despite massive public protests, the local panchayat authorities are reluctant to close down the Nadapuram garbage treatment plant without finding an alternative arrangement.

A residents’ action council which was formed seeking the immediate closure of the plant was also unrelenting in its demands.

Closure sought

“We demand its closure, as the plant has been functioning here for years without complying with any of the rules prescribed by the Pollution Control Board,” they point out.

Residents in the area have intensified their stir.

For the last six weeks, no garbage laden lorries have been allowed to enter the treatment yard. Waste recycling in Nadapuram town areas too has been hit by the strike.

Action committee leaders also criticised the local police. “The police recently registered cases against 40 protestors from the area for blocking vehicles,” the Action committee leaders said.

The Action committee said they will not allow sanitation workers to enter the plant for waste treatment works.

Collector’s intervention

“As all the conciliation talks were a failure so far, we are seeking the immediate intervention of the District Collector,” they said.

The panchayat said they would be ready to make any changes to the plant design as per the suggestions of the action committee other than closing it down.

“The issue can be settled by introducing better facilities, but, most of the protesters are not in favour of any such moves,” a local body member from the area said.
