Waste and wastes are unwanted or unusable materials. Waste is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or it is worthless, defective and of no use.
The term is often subjective (because waste to one person is not necessarily waste to another) and sometimes objectively inaccurate (for example, to send scrap metals to a landfill is to inaccurately classify them as waste, because they are recyclable). Examples include municipal solid waste (household trash/refuse), hazardous waste, wastewater (such as sewage, which contains bodily wastes (feces and urine) and surface runoff), radioactive waste, and others.
According to the Basel Convention,
Under the Waste Framework Directive, the European Union defines waste as "an object the holder discards, intends to discard or is required to discard."
There are many waste types defined by modern systems of waste management, notably including:
Waste management is all those activities and action required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes amongst other things, collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste together with monitoring and regulation. It also encompasses the legal and regulatory framework that relates to waste management encompassing guidance on recycling etc.
The term usually relates to all kinds of waste, whether generated during the extraction of raw materials, the processing of raw materials into intermediate and final products, the consumption of final products, or other human activities, including municipal (residential, institutional, commercial), agricultural, and special (health care, household hazardous wastes, sewage sludge). Waste management is intended to reduce adverse effects of waste on health, the environment or aesthetics.
Waste management practices are not uniform among countries (developed and developing nations); regions (urban and rural area), and sectors (residential and industrial).

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Adam Johnson sees a world without waste. That's not a world where people don't throw stuff away, but a world that adds value to this stuff and pulls it back into the productive economy rather than treating it as waste. It's a world where there is a continued tumult of experimentation, of scalable learning (to borrow a term from The Power of Pull), of openness and sharing to realise the abundance contained within what we throw away. It is a space for a new breed of entrepreneurs. Adam Johnson is the Founder of Garbologie, a business formed to create a world without waste. The idea behind Garbologie is to create networks of waste entrepreneurs, each addressing a particular type of waste. Garbologie is ...

Germany is Europe's biggest economy and leads the way in many sectors. One of them is something most people don't really like thinking about, waste management. German services are so efficient that neighboring countries are sending their own rubbish to Germany for disposal. CCTV's Guy Henderson reports from Cologne.

We produce so many products and throw out so much every day that garbage and waste disposal is turning into a major ecological nightmare. Garbage pollution consists of many things. Some can be converted to compost, a large portion can be recycled while a small portion could be considered non recyclable and put into a land fill. Garbage is classified into four categories 1. If the world's population lived as we do here in Ireland, it would take almost 4 planets to satisfy our demand for resources. The drive to consume and then dispose is a defining characteristic of modern society and although Ireland has taken large steps toward redressing our waste, we still have a ways to go. This penultimate episode of Eco Eye 13 examines how we can no longer afford to see our waste as something to be disposed of and forgotten. After visiting a recycling centre outside Copenhagen Duncan returns to Ireland to discover that people. environmental groups and even companies across the country are rethinking waste and what it means for us and the environmen

Thinking bout all of those days I left behind
Nowadays it seems I'm watching life just pass me by
The world is spinning beneath my feet at an unforgiving pace
And I, I just find myself falling victim to the chase
If only I could take it back, to the days when I was younger
Then maybe I would cherish that moment I grew older
Finally I understand that time won't wait for no one (no no no)
I can't live in the past
On N on, on N on, it don't look back (people move)
On N on, on N on, they won't look back (and thought I've moved)
On N on, on N on, I won't forget
What it took to get me here,
How much I sacrificed
Maybe I allowed myself to be consumed
Turned my back on what once the only life I knew
Too busy loving me to notice everything had changed
and I've come to terms that nothing ever stays the same
If only I could take it back, to the days when I was younger
Then maybe I would cherish that moment I grew older
Finally I understand that time won't wait for no one (no no no)
I can't live in the past
On N on, on N on, it don't look back (people move)
On N on, on N on, they won't look back (and thought I've moved)
On N on, on N on, I won't forget
What it took to get me here,
How much I sacrificed
Now I see, that on the road that I chose
I can't leave, when the weakness begins to show
Finally, I just gotta let it go
On N on, on N on, it don't look back (people move)
On N on, on N on, they won't look back (and thought I've moved)
On N on, on N on, I won't forget
What it took to get me here,
