The escalating Ebola crisis affects us all, and has shown a need for greater cooperation in developing public health communication and strategies. On October 2, 2014 (important to note this is a Webinar THURSDAY) 1 PM EST, the American Anthropological Association will be hosting a virtual event panel discussing the role anthropologists play in not only research, but infrastructure and policy, in light of the escalating Ebola outbreak in western Africa.
The panel will include Adia Benton, Robert Hahn, Jacklyn Lacey, and Michael McGovern; with Julie Livingston as the acting moderator. We will also be trying a new format for this webinar: tapping into Google Hangout On the Air. We will be streaming the event live on YouTube, where you will be able to interact with the panelists directly through comment submission. Come be a part of this important conversation and technological experiment.
Robert A. Hahn has served as an epidemiologist at the CDC since 1986 and is a member of the Senior Biomedical Research Service. He received his doctorate in anthropology at Harvard University and his masters of public health in epidemiology from the University of Washington. He is the author of Sickness and Healing: An Anthropological Perspective and co-editor of Anthropology and Public Health: Bridging Differences in Culture and Society.
Adia Benton is a medical anthropologist with interests in science and technology studies, and political and legal anthropology in sub-Saharan Africa (Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Mozambique). Her research in medical anthropology includes work on HIV/AIDS, essential surgical care, race and DNA ancestry, post-conflict development, humanitarianism and gender violence.
Jacklyn Lacey works at the American Museum of Natural History as the African and Pacific Ethnology Curatorial Associate. Her focus has been upon historical and (bio)medical anthropology of East Africa since her undergraduate work at Sarah Lawrence, with subsequent study of African linguistics at Harvard. She worked as an HIV/AIDS educator, tester and counselor for over 7 years, as well as a lab researcher, a pharmacy technician and a health educator on DEBI Interventions.
Mike McGovern is a political anthropologist who works in West Africa and uses a variety of sources from kinship idioms to the aesthetics of state-sponsored folklore to try to understand postcolonial states within the arc of longer historical trajectories. He has taught anthropology at Yale and was also the West Africa Project Director of the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based think tank that analyzes the causes of armed conflict.

Joan Didion (born December 5, 1934) is an American author best known for her novels and her literary journalism. Her novels and essays explore the disintegration of American morals and cultural chaos, where the overriding theme is individual and social fragmentation. A sense of anxiety or dread permeates much of her work.
For two years at Vogue, Didion worked her way up from promotional copywriter to associate feature editor. While there, she wrote her first novel, Run, River, which was published in 1963. She returned to California with her new husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, and in 1968, published Slouching Towards Bethlehem, her first work of nonfiction, a collection of magazine pieces about her experiences in California.[4]
In 1979, she published The White Album, another collection of magazine pieces from Life, Esquire, The Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times, and The New York Review of Books.
Play It As It Lays, set in Hollywood, was published in 1970 and A Book of Common Prayer was published in 1977. Her 1983 essay, Salvador, was written after a two-week-long trip to El Salvador with her husband. She also published Democracy in 1984, which narrates the story of a long but unrequited love affair between a wealthy heiress and an older man, a CIA officer, against the background of the Cold War and the Vietnam conflict. Her 1987 nonfiction book, Miami, looked at the Cuban expatriate community in Miami. In 1992, she published After Henry, a collection of twelve geographical essays. In 1996, she published The Last Thing He Wanted, a romantic thriller.
Dunne and Didion worked closely together for most of their careers, and indeed much of their writing is intertwined. With Dunne, Didion co-wrote a number of screenplays, including an adaptation of her novel Play It As It Lays. She and Dunne also spent eight years adapting the biography of journalist Jessica Savitch into the film Up Close & Personal.
Didion began writing The Year of Magical Thinking, a narrative of her response to the death of her husband and severe illness of their daughter, Quintana, on October 4, 2004, and finished the manuscript 88 days later on New Year's Eve.[5] She went on a book tour following the release of this memoir, doing many readings and interviews to promote it. She has said that she found the process very "therapeutic" during her period of mourning.[6]
In 2006, Everyman's Library published We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live, a compendium of much of Didion's writing, including the full content of her first seven published nonfiction books Slouching Towards Bethlehem, The White Album, Salvador, Miami, After Henry, Political Fictions, and Where I Was From, with an introduction by her contemporary, the noted critic John Leonard.
In 2007, she began working on a one-woman adaptation of The Year of Magical Thinking. Produced by Scott Rudin, this Broadway play featured Vanessa Redgrave. Although at first she was hesitant about writing a play, she has since found this new genre to be quite exciting.[6]
Didion wrote early drafts of the screenplay for an HBO biopic directed by Robert Benton on the famous newspaper publisher Katharine Graham. It currently remains untitled. Sources say it may trace Graham's paper, The Washington Post, in its dogged reportage on the Watergate scandal which led to President Richard Nixon's resignation.[7] However, Didion is no longer working on that project.[8]
In 2011, Knopf published Blue Nights, a memoir about aging.[9] The book focuses on Didion's daughter, Quintana Roo Dunne, who died just before her previous memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, was published. It addresses their relationship with “stunning frankness.” More generally, the book speaks to the anxieties Didion experienced about having and raising a child, and also about the aging process.
A photo of Didion shot by Juergen Teller was used as part of the luxury French brand Céline's Spring/Summer 2015 campaign.

wn.com/Joan Didion Quotes, Goodbye To All That, Essays, Favorite Books, Biography (2000)

"What makes Portland a movie-loving and movie-making city? What kinds of movies do Portlanders like and what kinds of films are being produced in our city?
When it comes to independent films, and second- and third- and fortieth-run films, Portland stands out. With Governor Kulongoski’s Greenlight Production Investment Fund and the establishment of the Oregon Production Investment Fund, Oregon's wage incentives and cash rebates have attracted everything from Robert Benton’s ""Feast of Love"" (starring Morgan Freeman) to the expansion of Portland’s LAIKA animation studios. They also have created a local film economy that generates $234 million per year. However encouraging, independent producers creating work with budgets under $1 million are struggling and not eligible for many of the public incentives.
The Oregonian's film critic, Shawn Levy, will share his insights into the emerging buzz around the Portland film community. Levy has been a writer for The Oregonian since 1992 and has also served as senior editor of American Film magazine and associate editor of Boxoffice magazine. Levy has written numerous articles that have appeared in news¬ papers and magazines around the world. He has also authored four books, including ""The Last Playboy,"" ""Rat Pack Confidential"" and ""King of Comedy: The Life and Art of Jerry Lewis.""

DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD: THE STORY OF THE NATIONAL LAMPOON is the new documentary that explores the influential comedy magazine that helped launch the careers of John Belushi, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and indelibly shaped American comedy. How the incubator for SNL, Animal House, Caddyshack, and more came to define satire and bridge the counter culture with mainstream entertainment is explored with director Douglas Tirola, and we look at footage from the film in this uncensored BYOD interview, hosted by Ondi Timoner.
FILM & GUEST INFO:
Director Douglas Tirola's documentary DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD: THE STORY OF THE NATIONAL LAMPOON - tells the story of its rise and fall through fresh, candid interviews with its key staff, and illustrated with hundreds of outrageous images from the mag itself (along with never-seen interview footage from the magazine's prime). The film gives fans of the Lampoon a unique inside look at what made the magazine tick, its key players, and why it was so outrageously successful: a magazine that dared to think what no one was thinking, but wished they had.
Douglas Tirola is an award-winning director whose documentaries have been distributed around the world and have premiered at prestigious film festivals including Sundance, Tribeca, Berlin, HotDocs, Full Frame, Edinburgh, True/False, and SXSW. His documentary HEY BARTENDER was nominated for a James Beard Award, and released theatrically in 2013 before being acquired by Showtime; preceded by the award winning ALL IN: THE POKER MOVIE in 2012, which was acquired by Showtime and Netflix. Douglas' first feature documentary, AN OMAR BROADWAY FILM premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival where it was acquired by HBO Documentary Films.
As a producer, Douglas' films include the critically acclaimed documentary ACTRESS (Cinema Guild), which was nominated for an IFP Gotham Award, the award-winning MAKING THE BOYS (First Run Features) which told the story of the groundbreaking play and film “The Boys in the Band” and FAKE IT SO REAL, both were NY Times Critic's Picks.
Douglas' latest film DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD: THE STORY OF THE NATIONAL LAMPOON premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and will be released theatrically by Magnolia Pictures this fall.
Douglas has also worked as a screenwriter for Paramount, Universal, Fox, Warmer Brothers and Sony. Earlier in his career he worked on films with directors, Woody Allen, Robert Benton, Mike Nichols and Penny Marshall – his first job in the business was as a production assistant.

Four Star Playhouse is an American television anthology series that ran from 1952 to 1956, sponsored in its first bi-weekly season by The Singer Company; Bristol-Myers became an alternate sponsor when it became a weekly series in the fall of 1953 (both sponsors' names alternated as part of the show's title in its initial broadcasts). The original premise was that Charles Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven, and Dick Powell would take turns starring in episodes. However, several other performers took the lead from time to time, including Ronald Colman and Joan Fontaine. Blake Edwards was among the writers and directors who contributed to the series, making his debut as a director on the program in 1952..Edwards created the recurring character (eight episodes) of illegal gambling house operator Willie Dante for Dick Powell to play on this series. The character was later revamped and spun off in his own series starring Howard Duff, then-husband of Lupino.
