Oda Nobunaga's control of Japan grows shakier by the day as more rivals emerge to challenge his hold on Kyoto. Egged on by the puppet shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, the powerful daimyo Takeda Shingen brings his army down upon Oda's closest ally, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and destroys them, Tokugawa escapes with his life and the aid of a ninja, Hattori Hanzo, whose subterfuge succeeds in turning back the Takeda forces. They return under Takeda's heir, however, to besiege Nagashino Castle. Tokugawa's forces hold out until a lowly footman named Torii Suneemon gives his life to bring Oda and Tokugawa reinforcements back to the troops at Nagashino. Oda's innovative strategy with his arquebusiers defeats the famous Takeda cavalry charge and wins the day, but his military victories do nothing for him in the end. His own general, Akechi Mitsuhide, leads his army against him in a surprise attack at the temple of Honno-ji. Rather than be captured, Oda Nobunaga commits seppuku.

The Onin War tore Japan apart, but also kicked off the Sengoku Jidai or Warring States Period that's a seminal part of Japanese history. The power of the shogun dissolved and regional clan leaders or daimyo fought for control of the country. In the mid 16th century, near Kyoto, a clan called the Matsudaira found itself pinched between two great rivals: the Oda and the Imagawa. Abducted as a hostage by the Oda, the scion of the Matsudaira clan (the young Tokugawa Ieyasu) grew up to fight alongside of the Imagawa when he was released. Their combined forces threatened to destroy the entire Oda clan, but Oda Nobunaga had a different idea. They clashed at the Battle of Okehazama.

Nobunaga's Coffin AKA Nobunaga no hitsugi (2006)
Planning to conquer the nation, Oda Nobunaga built Azuchi Castle which had Japan's first multi-storied central tower. For the next 3 years, he sent his men into various lands to subdue the country.
Because one of his vassals, Hashiba Hideyoshi, had difficulty in taking Takamatsu Castle in Bichu-no-kuni, he sent Akechi Mitushide out as reinforcement for Hideyoshi. At the same time Nobunaga decides to enter Kyoto. The day before his going into Kyoto, he calls his loyal vassal Ota Nobusada and tells him a secret. In addition he gives Nobusada five wooden boxes for safekeeping. Nobusada was famous for being loyal to Nobunaga to the point of idiocy and was called "Gyuichi" (the Cow).
Nobunaga takes a handful of men and proceeds towards Kyoto. Early in the morning 2 days later, Gyuichi learns of Nobunaga's death at Honnoji Temple due to treachery. It was impossible for Nobunaga's small number of men including Mori Ranmaru to withstand Mitsuhide's forces and they were said to have perished in the temple fire. But the strange thing is, Nobunaga's remains could not be found.

Oda Nobunaga (織田 信長, 
Oda Nobunaga (help·info)?, June 23, 1534 – June 21, 1582) was the initiator of the unification of Japan under the shogunate in the late 16th century, which ruled Japan until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. He was also a major daimyo during the Sengoku period of Japanese history. His opus was continued, completed and finalized by his successors Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was the second son of Oda Nobuhide, a deputy shugo (military governor) with land holdings in Owari Province. Nobunaga lived a life of continuous military conquest, eventually conquering a third of Japan before his death in 1582. His successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a loyal Oda supporter, would become the first man to unify all of Japan, and was thus the first ruler of all Japan since the Ōnin War.
Oda Nobunaga was born on June 23, 1534, and was given the childhood name of Kippōshi (吉法師?). He was the second son of Oda Nobuhide. Through his childhood and early teenage years, he was well known for his bizarre behavior and received the name of Owari no Ōutsuke (尾張の大うつけ?, The Fool of Owari). With the introduction of firearms into Japan, though, he became known for his fondness of Tanegashima firearms. He was also known to run around with other youths from the area, without any regard to his own rank in society. He is said to be born in Nagoya Castle, although this is subject to debate. It is however certain that he was born in the Owari domain. In 1574 Nobunaga accepted the title of Kuge (or Court Noble), then in 1577 he was given the title of Udaijin (or Minister of the Right), the third highest position in the Imperial court.

After like six or seven tries I finally managed to do the mission properly. Had some trouble keeping the Tokugawa units from routing. For anyone else struggling, here's the battle with the cutscenes and stuff. In hindsight, I should have moved Hideyoshi's unit to the top, but I was expecting them to charge the middle as well. Recorded on the PC version with Shadowplay on a G751. -

After like six or seven tries I finally managed to do the mission properly. Had some trouble keeping the Tokugawa units from routing.
For anyone else struggling, here's the battle with the cutscenes and stuff.
In hindsight, I should have moved Hideyoshi's unit to the top, but I was expecting them to charge the middle as well.
Recorded on the PC version with Shadowplay on a G751.

Japan Cuts 2012 centerpiece highlighted the career of living Japanese film legend Koji Yakusho who was in attendance for the screening of his film "The Woodsman and the Rain" on July 20, 2012 for an introduction and audience Q&A; as well as to accept the first ever Japan Cuts "Cut Above" award.
Koji Yakusho, Japan's leading acting man, born on January 1, 1956 in Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture, became a highly acclaimed star in 1983 while playing the role of Oda Nobunaga in NHK's drama Tokugawa Ieyasu. Yet, it was originally Maxim Gorky's The Lower Depths which stimulated Yakusho's theatrical "obsession." Yakusho's first big breakthrough came in 1978 when '60s actor and icon Tatsuya Nakadai selected him and 3 others out of 800 applicants to study at the Mumei-juku ("Studio for Unknown Performers"). In reference to his experience as a civil servant, Nakadai gave him the stage name "Yakusho", which means either "municipal office" or "acting versatility." In 1986, he played the nameless "Man in the White Suit", who gleefully transgresses all social norms in some of the most memorable scenes of Juzo Itami's Tampopo (1985). Yakusho's passionate acting earned him much praise, and in 1998 he received a special award from the Japan Minister of Education, Science, Sports and Culture extolling his phenomenal contribution to Japanese culture.
In the mid-90s, Yakusho's rise to superstardom seemed irresistible. Masayuki Suo's Shall We Dance? (1996), an instant classic, spurred a Japan-wide fascination with dance. The following year, The Eel won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Yoshimitsu Morita's erotic drama A Lost Paradise was the second largest-grossing film at the Japanese box office. In cult favorite Cure (1997), directed by celebrated auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Yakusho went on to play a cop pushed to the edge of the abyss by his search for a string of seemingly unconnected murders. Several collaborations with Kurosawa followed, to international acclaim (License to Live, Charisma). His performance in Shohei Imamura's Warm Water Under the Red Bridge earned him the award for Best Actor at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2001.
After featuring in Rob Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) and Alejandro Iñárritu's Babel (2006), Yakusho gained international recognition and a new wave of international admirers. In addition to acting, Yakusho made his début behind the camera with Toad's Oil in 2009.
In June 2012, Yakusho received the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan for "outstanding achievement in the creative field." He is the Guest of Honor of this year's Japan Cuts. We will be paying tribute to his impressive body of work with a special focus on his acting career, premiering, among other things, his latest feature films The Woodsman and the Rain and Chronicle of my Mother as well as 2010 samurai hit 13 Assassins during the festival, and presenting him with the first Japan Cuts prize ever, the CUT ABOVE award for excellence in film.

In reference to his experience as a civil servant, Nakadai gave him the stage name "Yakusho", which means either "municipal office" or "acting versatility." In 1986, he played the nameless "Man in the White Suit", who gleefully transgresses all social norms in some of the most memorable scenes of Juzo Itami's Tampopo (1985). Yakusho's passionate acting earned him much praise, and in 1998 he received a special award from the Japan Minister of Education, Science, Sports and Culture extolling his phenomenal contribution to Japanese culture.
In the mid-90s, Yakusho's rise to superstardom seemed irresistible. Masayuki Suo's Shall We Dance? (1996), an instant classic, spurred a Japan-wide fascination with dance. The following year, The Eel won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Yoshimitsu Morita's erotic drama A Lost Paradise was the second largest-grossing film at the Japanese box office. In cult favorite Cure (1997), directed by celebrated auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Yakusho went on to play a cop pushed to the edge of the abyss by his search for a string of seemingly unconnected murders. Several collaborations with Kurosawa followed, to international acclaim (License to Live, Charisma). His performance in Shohei Imamura's Warm Water Under the Red Bridge earned him the award for Best Actor at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2001.
After featuring in Rob Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) and Alejandro Iñárritu's Babel (2006), Yakusho gained international recognition and a new wave of international admirers. In addition to acting, Yakusho made his début behind the camera with Toad's Oil in 2009.
In June 2012, Yakusho received the Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan for "outstanding achievement in the creative field." He is the Guest of Honor of this year's Japan Cuts. We will be paying tribute to his impressive body of work with a special focus on his acting career, premiering, among other things, his latest feature films The Woodsman and the Rain and Chronicle of my Mother as well as 2010 samurai hit 13 Assassins during the festival, and presenting him with the first Japan Cuts prize ever, the CUT ABOVE award for excellence in film.
