Much of the bed bug literature states that the common bed bug does not groom, but this is untrue. Insects sense via many ways their environment, vision being one, but chemical and heat sense are others. An insect must have clean sensors for this process to work. Here you can see the bed bug wiping antennae and its proboscis and more specifically the stylet fascicle. A bed bug will stop all of a sudden and begin the cleaning process. Pest management professionals and the pest control industry having knowledge about chewing insects such as cockroaches have always said that bed bugs do not groom, but I think they never watched them behave. The adult bed bug has a setal comb on the first tibiae and the comb is used in grooming. There is also a setal brush structure in this vicinity that it uses to climb smooth surfaces and may also be used in grooming. Adult grooming is the adult equivalent to child grooming and applies to any behaviour where an adult is prepared so they unwittingly allow abusive behaviour or exploitation to occur later. The abuser typically befriends or builds a relationship with the victim in order to establish a relationship of trust. Well known examples of such abusive behaviours are sexual abuse, elder abuse, financial extortion, human trafficking and sexual slavery.
