U.S. Republican front-runner Donald Trump says he would allow South Korea to have its own nuclear weapons and would be willing to withdraw U.S. troops from the peninsula.
In an interview with the New York Times on Saturday, Trump said both South Korea and Japan should have their own nukes to protect themselves from North Korea.
This goes against Washington's long-held stance on nuclear non-proliferation in Northeast Asia.
Pyongyang has been enhancing its nuclear capabilities and conducted a fourth nuclear test earlier this year.
Trump also said the U.S. cannot afford to lose "vast amounts" of money stationing troops in the two countries, and said Washington will no longer be exploited.
There are currently about 29-thousand U.S. troops stationed in South Korea and there's a sizeable air force and marine contingent in Japan.

The US has deployed dozens of ground troops to Syria claiming they will assist Kurdish forces in their battle against Daesh terrorists.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 30 US soldiers arrived in the northern city of Kobani over the past two days. The troops will allegedly help plan offensives against the Takfiris in the two Syrian cities of Jarablus and Raqqah. Kurdish sources also announced that some 20 US soldiers arrived in Hasakeh province in eastern Syria. Back in October, the White House said several dozen special operations troops would be dispatched to Syria for the first open-ended mission by US ground forces there. The presence of US troops on the ground in Syria lacks any mandate from the Syrian government. Damascus says it is a violation of its sovereignty.

But the White House insisted that its overall strategy to combat Isis remained the same and said the special forces troops would be helping coordinate local ground forces in the north of the country and other non-specified “coalition efforts” to counter Isis rather than engaging in major ground operations.
“The decision the president has made is to further intensify our support for our forces who have made progress against Isis,” the White House spokesman, Josh Earnest, said at a news conference.”*

Conan Christopher O'Brien (born April 18, 1963) is an American television host, comedian, writer, producer and performer. Since November 2010 he has hosted Conan, a late-night talk show that airs on the American cable television station TBS.
O'Brien was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, and raised in an Irish Catholic family. He served as president of the Harvard Lampoon while attending Harvard University, and was a writer for the sketch comedy series Not Necessarily the News. After writing for several comedy shows in Los Angeles, he joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live, and later of The Simpsons. He hosted Late Night with Conan O'Brien from 1993 to 2009, followed by seven months hosting The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, the only person to serve as the permanent host for both NBC programs.
O'Brien was born in Brookline, Massachusetts (a suburb of Boston) to Thomas O'Brien, a physician, epidemiologist, and professor of medicine at Harvard, and Ruth O'Brien (née Reardon), an attorney and partner at the Boston firm Ropes & Gray. He is the third of six children. O'Brien's family is Irish Catholic and descends from pre-Civil War era immigrants. In a Late Night episode, O'Brien paid a visit to County Kerry, Ireland, where his ancestors originated.

The US has deployed dozens of ground troops to Syria claiming they will assist Kurdish forces in their battle against Daesh terrorists.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 30 US soldiers arrived in the northern city of Kobani over the past two days. The troops will allegedly help plan offensives against the Takfiris in the two Syrian cities of Jarablus and Raqqah. Kurdish sources also announced that some 20 US soldiers arrived in Hasakeh province in eastern Syria. Back in October, the White House said several dozen special operations troops would be dispatched to Syria for the first open-ended mission by US ground forces there. The presence of US troops on the ground in Syria lacks any mandate from the Syrian government. Damascus says it is a violation of its sovereignty.

A former Iraqi US Army interpreter is languishing in a troubled refugee hotspot of Idomeni after numerous failed attempts to obtain an American visa. To get it, he required – but reportedly never received – a mere acknowledgement of working for the US troops. More than 15,000 U.S. and 300,000 South Korean troops have kicked off simultaneous joint military drills on the Korean Peninsula aimed at countering North Korean aggression.
The joint military drills — Key Resolve and Foal Eagle, the largest in scale since 2010, will continue through early April. The previously scheduled exercises come amid new UN Security Council sanctions against the "Hermit Kingdom" following North Korea's nuclear and long-range missile tests in January and February. South Korea has announced its intention to apply stiff new sanctions of its own this week.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered his country’s nuclear weapons to be at the ready, and threatened to launch nuclear strikes on both South Korea and the U.S.
South Korean newspapers are reporting that, for the first time, Key Resolve will test the new U.S.-South Korean military strategy operation plan, Operations Plan 5015, which aims to deter North Korea’s possible use of weapons of mass destruction by preemptive attack. The Korea Times reports that OPlan 5015 "calls for promptly hitting back after North Korean attacks through a preemptive strike on the North's core military facilities and weapons as well as its top leaders," to include Kim.
The drills include several other exercises.
About 2,100 Marines and sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit out of Okinawa, Japan, along with the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard and the amphibious dock landing ships Ashland and Germantown, recently arrived in South Korea for exercise Ssang Yong 16, which began March 2 and continues through March 20, Marine Corps officials said. All told, about 3,000 troops from the Republic of Korea Marine Corps and 7,000 U.S. troops are taking part. Five Military Sealift Command prepositioning ships have joined the drill.
Held every two years, the Ssang Yong exercise involves U.S. and South Korean troops conducting amphibious operations for possible disaster relief or wartime missions, said 2nd Lt. Joshua Hays, a Marine Corps spokesman.
In addition, Key Resolve involves the participation of the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis and its strike group, the submarine North Carolina, F-22 Raptors and nuclear-capable B-2 bombers, according to Korea Times.
It is unclear whether North Korea actually believes the exercise is camouflage for an invasion by the U.S. and South Korea or it is trying to frighten South Korea into canceling the exercise, but with the militaries from both sides operating so closely to each other, the chances of something going wrong increases, Klingner said.
“In their statements, they certainly declare that they see the potential for a U.S. attack,” he said. “They will point to U.S. attacks on Libya and Iraq and Serbia as indicative of what the U.S. and its allies might do to them.”
The North Koreans are particularly wary at seeing Marines on the Korean peninsula, Klingner said. In September 1950, Marines and soldiers launched an amphibious landing at Inchon that stopped the North Korean advance south and led to UN forces crossing the 38th parallel into North Korea.

Still, top U.S. defense officials say the deaths won't "break the back" of the extremist group, which is in a fierce fight for an ancient city in Syria and claim responsibility for bombing a soccer stadium in Iraq.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Friday the U.S. progress in eliminating members of the IS "cabinet" was hampering its ability to conduct and inspire attacks against the West. The announcement came as the battle to retake the Syrian city of Palmyra entered its third day and Iraqi forces continued their march to recapture Mosul. A suicide bombing in a soccer stadium south of Baghdad, killing nearly 30 people, underscored the difficult fight ahead.
The secretary and I both believe that there will be an increase in U.S. forces in Iraq in coming weeks, but that decision hasn't been made," Dunford said. He did not say how big that increase might be.
He and Carter said accelerating the campaign against the Islamic State will include more assistance like the artillery fire and targeting help that U.S. Marines provided earlier this week to Iraqi forces advancing on Mosul. But they said American forces remain well behind the front lines.
"I think there's a lot of reasons for us to be optimistic about the next several months," Dunford said. "But by no means would I say that we're about to break the back of ISIL or that the fight is over."
Using an acronym for the militant group, Carter said the U.S. is "systematically eliminating ISIL's cabinet," killing several key members in strikes this week.
Carter would not provide details about the strikes, but a senior U.S. official said the group's financial minister was killed along with two associates in a U.S. raid in Syria. The official was not authorized to discuss the operations so spoke on condition of anonymity.
Carter said the finance minister, who is known by several names, including Abdul-Rahman Mustafa al-Qaduli and Haji Imam, was a "well-known terrorist" who had a hand in terrorist plots outside of Iraq and Syria.

US military chief says Washington is planning to increase the number of its troops in Iraq in order to help the country in its battle against the ISIL Takfiri militants.
General Dunford told Pentagon reporters that recommendations on ways to increase U-S support for Iraq will be discussed with President Barack Obama soon. Meanwhile Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter told reporters that the US has been looking at a number of options that have not yet officially been submitted to the White House. Earlier this week, the US military confirmed the deployment of some 200 Marines in northern Iraq. Boosting U-S military presence in Iraq is a sensitive issue for Obama who has pledged not to deploy ground forces there. Many political figures and groups in Iraq, including a major Shia group, have voiced their opposition to presence of US forces.

Ibrahim Esmael Ibrahim, a 26-year-old Iraqi from Baghdad, had been offered a job by Virginia-based Global Linguist Solutions (GLS), the major provider of linguistic services for the US military and intelligence community, according to an exclusive by Public Radio International (PRI). In 2007, GLS was awarded $4.6 billion five-year contract with the military intelligence command that included providing interpreters and translators for the US troops in Iraq.
The salary was generous, Ibrahim told PRI – $1,500 a month, plus bonuses. American soldiers who Ibrahim worked with liked him and even nicknamed him “AP.” But after six months into his service, he reportedly received death threats from Iraqi insurgents. "They told me I will cut your head from your body if I see you again here," he said.
Urged by his family to leave Iraq, Ibrahim reported his badge number to GLS office in Baghdad’s Green Zone and fled to Syria. In Damascus, he landed a white-collar job with a telecommunications company, but later decided to reunite with his relatives living in the US. Ibrahim’s brother-in-law told that because of his service with the US troops in Iraq, he could be eligible to apply for a US Special Immigrant Visa (SIV).
But to obtain one, Ibrahim required a proof of his six-month employment. He reached the Pentagon’s contractor, but says he got zero result: “They don’t answer, they don’t answer me… They say the contract is closed with the US Army and you can’t get your documents. It’s very difficult."

This half-hour Army documentary provides a view of US soldiers in the Republic of Korea that should engage both DMZ veterans and people with an interest in Korean history. Starting with the ubiquitous pub visit, the film breezes through geography lessons, food and entertainment on the Home Front.
Remarkably the film is not a patronising propaganda piece like so many other similar productions - other than the rather clumsy section on race. This success is down to the genial presence of Burgess 'The Penguin' Meredith as our guide, who always knows when to offer a supporting look or comment to camera. Whilst the British may come across as a little staid, the film explains that after four years of war, "we are not quiet, just weary".

US officials have been left trying to explain how the deployment does not undermine Obama's earlier promises not to "put boots on the ground".
The announcement also threatened to undermine talks being held in Vienna on how to end the war in Syria.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the move was decided "unilaterally and without reference to the Syrian leadership". He added that "neither the United States nor Russia want the conflict to become a so-called proxy war".
So, is deepening US and Russian involvement making a resolution to the civil war even more difficult?

Journalist Geraldo Rivera joined the Sept. 30, 2013 broadcast of the Alex Jones Show to discuss a host of issues, including the fact that U.S. troops are guarding poppy fields in Afghanistan and the War on Drugs: «I've been covering the drug war under Nixon since 1970... We've spent well over a trillion dollars... The drug war is an absolute, abject failure," he emphasized. Geraldo continued, stating that there's women sentenced for 20 years in prison because they got set up carrying merely an ounce of cocaine for their boyfriends. That's called a police state, a criminal state.
Rivera also told the Alex Jones Show that although he supports the idea of free health care, his health insurance costs have more than doubled as a result of Obamacare.
"Half a dozen people work for me....and my health insurance for all those people has more than doubled in the last two years," said Rivera, adding, "I can't think that it's not related to Obamacare."

During an appearance on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight, Ted Turner said he thinks it's "good" that U.S. soldiers are killing themselves because it shows humanity has evolved a distaste for war.

Asked what he thought about the fact that more American soldiers commit suicide than are killed in combat, host Morgan said it was "shocking," but Turner responded, "No, I think it's good."
Turner went on to argue that it was time for people to start acting "enlightened" and that this was why it was "good" U.S. soldiers are committing suicide in such large numbers because it shows an aversion to war.
At first, Turner smirked and appeared as if he was about to say it's "terrific" that U.S. soldiers are killing themselves, before using the word "good" instead and adopting a sterner facial expression.
As the New York Times reported earlier this year, U.S. soldiers are killing themselves at a rate of nearly one per day and the figure continues to rise. Reasons for the suicides include the stress caused by such a high number of deployments as well as the horrors troops have witnessed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
A recent poll of soldiers who had tried to commit suicide found that the top reason for them attempting to take their own life was "intense emotional distress."
Turner was also asked by the host who he thought should replace the United States as the world's policeman, to which he responded, "the United Nations."
Some have argued that Turner is expressing his satisfaction at U.S. troops killing themselves because it indicates that humanity is starting to spiritually evolve a distaste for war.
However, Turner has repeatedly voiced his wish to see billions of people wiped off the planet via population reduction programs.
Ted Turner's satisfaction at U.S. troops committing suicide takes on a different context when you understand that Turner is a neo-eugenicist who routinely advocates massive population reduction.
"A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal," Turner stated in 1996.
In the third world, Turner has contributed a billion dollars to fund population reduction, namely through United Nations programs.

The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential Campaign raised more campaign donations from active military than all other presidential candidates—Republican or Democrat—including having raised more funds from this segment than all other GOP competitors combined, and more than incumbent President Barack Obama.
Dr. Paul, an Air Force veteran, raised more than $75,000 from active military in the third quarter. This comes after Dr. Paul out-raised all GOP candidates -- including all GOPers combined, and President Obama singularly -- in the second quarter of this year. Dr. Paul also outraised his GOP competitors in a head-to-head comparison during his 2008 run for the presidency.
"Ron Paul is the only candidate with a plan to end the growing number of unconstitutional undeclared wars, having an unclear connection to U.S. national security, end costly overseas nation-building that pays no friendship dividends, and stop subsidizing global security. This half-hour Army documentary provides a view of US soldiers in the Republic of Korea that should engage both DMZ veterans and people with an interest in Korean history. The film follows US Army NCO Clint Walker's tour in Korea with the 1st Cavalry Division. There is information on the dangers of the DMZ (later to erupt in the DMZ Conflict or DMZ War of the late 1960s) and the need for readiness (check out the drill, "You will never know when it's the real thing.") It also touches upon problems that are still with US forces in Korea decades later: "undesirable elements" around US bases and a reckless American driver whose jeep accident upsets local Koreans, "One careless act can louse up the whole operation!" But the real focus is on Walker's relationship with his Korean (KATUSA) comrade, "Kim." With Kim's help, the American is exposed to Korean music and dance, food and family life (including the claim that most Korean families don't allow their daughters to meet US soldiers.) There is fascinating footage of post-war poverty in Korea, a classroom with 80 students and the beginning of the "Miracle on the Han" growth of the South Korean economy.
