Austrian man gets life for incest, murder. Josef Fritzl was convicted of homicide, enslavement, incest, rape and other charges on Thursday and sentenced to life in a psychiatric prison for holding his daughter captive for 24 years and fathering her 7 children. Source: AP Television/Pool//Restrictions The Austrian father accused of holding his daughter captive and raping her thousands of times over 2 decades has been sentenced to life in prison. On Thursday a jury convicted Josef Fritzl of all the charges against him including incest and murder. ((Rudolf Mayer, Defence lawyer for Josef Fritzl: "It is justice and when you think that normally for one rape you get an Austrian punishment starting out from two years and in this case there are three thousand rapes and of course it's the only sentence that is possible.")) The 3 day trial included reports from experts about defendant's mental heath and 11 hours worth of videotaped testimony from the victim Elizabeth. From the time she was 18 until just about a year ago, when she was 41, Elizabeth was forced to live in a small dingy basement built beneath the family home. She gave birth to 7 of her father's children during that time. One of them died as a newborn. Prosecutors say the baby boy could've been saved if he'd been given proper medical treatment. Before the verdict was announced, Fritzl told the court that he regrets his actions with all his heart and that he can't make it right anymore. Prison officials say the 73 year old man is under a suicide watch and will be taken to a psychiatric ward. He won't be eligible for parole for at least 15 years and even then judges and experts would have to sign off on his release. Elizabeth and her six surviving children have spent the last several month recovering at a secret location.
