Algherese (Standard Catalan: Alguerès, IPA: [əɫɣəˈɾɛs]; Algherese: Alguerés, IPA: [alɣaˈɾes]) is the variant of the Catalan language spoken in the city of Alghero (L'Alguer in Catalan), in the northwest of Sardinia, Italy. Catalan-speaking colonists repopulated the town and expelled the mixed population (Sardinians, Ligurians, Corsicans and Tuscans) in 1372, after several revolts.
Catalan was replaced as the official language by Spanish, then by Italian in the mid 18th century, but its use remained widespread until at least the 1960s. Today it has semi-official status alongside Italian.
According to recent linguistic research, 22.4% of the population in Alghero speak the language natively and above 90% have some knowledge of the language.
The Algherese variant is classified in the Eastern Catalan block, but it has many differences from Central Catalan. Some of the most obvious:

Recorded August 25, 2008. Alghero is a town of about 42,000 inhabitants on the Italian island of Sardinia. Alghero a town of Spanish origins on Italian territory, considered by many to be the most fascinating on the island. The Spanish domination lasted over four hundred years, leaving clear marks in the intriguing Old Town architecture and in the locally spoken dialect. Bound on seaward by great stone bastion walls and guarded to landward by a series of stone towers. Alghero's old churches and small squares are connections in a network of narrow paved and cobbled streets. The town, sublime by day, becomes enchanting while strolling along the old walls at sunset. A bustling town, it offers more than just beautiful white sandy beaches and crystalline waters; tradition combined with moderni...
