SHERPA, a documentary about the mountain guides of Mount Everest, set out to expose tension in the 2014 Everest climbing season from the Sherpa mountain guides point of view and instead captured tragedy when an avalanche struck, killing 16 Sherpas. Director Jennifer Peedom discusses what it was like to film the dangerous expedition as well as capturing the heartbreaking story of how Sherpa guides banded together through tragedy to face issues among the guides as well as the mountain climbing industry in this uncensored BYOD interview hosted by Ondi Timoner.

A fight on Everest? It seemed incredible. But in 2013 news channels around the world reported an ugly brawl at 21,000ft as European climbers fled a mob of angry Sherpas.
In 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay had reached the summit in a spirit of co-operation and brave optimism. Now climbers and Sherpas were trading insults – even blows. What had happened to the happy, smiling Sherpas and their dedication in getting foreigners to the top of the mountain they hold so sacred? Determined to explore what was going on, the filmmakers set out to make a film of the 2014 Everest climbing season, from the Sherpas’ point of view. Instead, they captured a tragedy that would change Everest forever. At 6.45am on 18th April, 2014, a 14 million ton block of ice crashed down onto the climbing route through the Khumbu Icefall, killing 16 Sherpas. It was the worst tragedy in the history of Everest. The disaster provoked a drastic reappraisal about the role of the Sherpas in the Everest industry. SHERPA, tells the story of how, in the face of fierce opposition, the Sherpas united in grief and anger to reclaim the mountain they call Chomolungma.
Jennifer Peedom is known for her intimate and compassionate portraits, documenting stories from the epic to the everyday, often in extreme situations. Her credits include the internationally renowned documentaries MIRACLE ON EVEREST and SOLO.
Jen is an experienced climber, and has worked as a high altitude director on several expeditions including Discovery Channel’s six-part series EVEREST: BEYOND THE LIMIT. She has developed a strong friendship with Sherpa people over many years of working in the Himalayas since 2004, and these connections were key to the access we were granted in the making of SHERPA. Her awards include an Australian Film Institute and Film Critics Circle Award for Best Documentary, multiple Australian Directors Guild Awards for Best Direction, and a ‘Rocky’ at the World Media Awards. Jen was also awarded the inaugural David and Joan Williams Documentary Fellowship, which recognises and rewards creative ambition, intellectual rigour and innovation in documentary cinema. Jen has directed for ABC, SBS, BBC, France 5, ITVS, Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel.

In 2013, the world's media reported on a shocking mountain-high brawl as European climbers fled a mob of angry Sherpas.
Director Jennifer Peedom and her team set out to uncover the cause of this altercation, intending to film the 2014 climbing season from the Sherpas' point of view. Instead, they captured Everest's greatest tragedy, when a huge block of ice crashed down onto the climbing route, killing 16 Sherpas. For the Himalayan workers repeatedly traversing the mountain carrying supplies, the risk of this hazardous endeavor is multiplied.
This stunning documentary, shot by high-altitude cinematographer Renan Ozturk, explores the unequal relationship between cashed-up foreign expeditions and their guides. It is also a story of family and tradition, as exemplified by Phurba Tashi Sherpa, an experienced climber at the heart of this commanding film.

The film "Sherpas - the True Heroes of Mount Everest"
shows the work, the hardship and the life of the Sherpas at the Mount Everest. With their eyes we follow the expedition of the Swiss mountain guide Kari Kobler and his European climbers to the highest mountain of the world. For the first time this film shows the stories of the Sherpas, their feelings and fears on the climb of Mount Everest. They tell us bluntly what it means for them to work for Western clients, to act as their ladders to the top of the world. We experience their successes but also tragedy when the expedition loses a member. We see how the Sherpas risk their own life to save the one of their Western client, and how they are affected by his death.

What had happened to the happy, smiling Sherpas and their dedication in getting foreigners to the top of the mountain they hold so sacred? Determined to explore what was going on, the filmmakers set out to make a film of the 2014 Everest climbing season, from the Sherpas’ point of view. Instead, they captured a tragedy that would change Everest forever. At 6.45am on 18th April, 2014, a 14 million ton block of ice crashed down onto the climbing route through the Khumbu Icefall, killing 16 Sherpas. It was the worst tragedy in the history of Everest. The disaster provoked a drastic reappraisal about the role of the Sherpas in the Everest industry. SHERPA, tells the story of how, in the face of fierce opposition, the Sherpas united in grief and anger to reclaim the mountain they call Chomolungma.
Jennifer Peedom is known for her intimate and compassionate portraits, documenting stories from the epic to the everyday, often in extreme situations. Her credits include the internationally renowned documentaries MIRACLE ON EVEREST and SOLO.
Jen is an experienced climber, and has worked as a high altitude director on several expeditions including Discovery Channel’s six-part series EVEREST: BEYOND THE LIMIT. She has developed a strong friendship with Sherpa people over many years of working in the Himalayas since 2004, and these connections were key to the access we were granted in the making of SHERPA. Her awards include an Australian Film Institute and Film Critics Circle Award for Best Documentary, multiple Australian Directors Guild Awards for Best Direction, and a ‘Rocky’ at the World Media Awards. A fight on Everest? It seemed incredible. But in 2013 news channels around the world reported an ugly brawl at 21,000ft as European climbers fled a mob of angry Sherpas.
In 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay had reached the summit in a spirit of co-operation and brave optimism. Now climbers and Sherpas were trading insults – even blows. What had happened to the happy, smiling Sherpas and their dedication in getting foreigners to the top of the mountain they hold so sacred? Determined to explore what was going on, the filmmakers set out to make a film of the 2014 Everest climbing season, from the Sherpas’ point of view. Instead, they captured a tragedy that would change Everest forever. At 6.45am on 18th April, 2014, a 14 million ton block of ice crashed down onto the climbing route through the Khumbu Icefall, killing 16 Sherpas. It was the worst tragedy in the history of Everest. The disaster provoked a drastic reappraisal about the role of the Sherpas in the Everest industry. SHERPA, tells the story of how, in the face of fierce opposition, the Sherpas united in grief and anger to reclaim the mountain they call Chomolungma.
Jennifer Peedom is known for her intimate and compassionate portraits, documenting stories from the epic to the everyday, often in extreme situations. Her credits include the internationally renowned documentaries MIRACLE ON EVEREST and SOLO.
Jen is an experienced climber, and has worked as a high altitude director on several expeditions including Discovery Channel’s six-part series EVEREST: BEYOND THE LIMIT. She has developed a strong friendship with Sherpa people over many years of working in the Himalayas since 2004, and these connections were key to the access we were granted in the making of SHERPA. Her awards include an Australian Film Institute and Film Critics Circle Award for Best Documentary, multiple Australian Directors Guild Awards for Best Direction, and a ‘Rocky’ at the World Media Awards. Dreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwe people and were later adopted by some neighboring nations through intermarriage and trade.
The Ojibwe people have an ancient legend about the origin of the dreamcatcher. Storytellers speak of the Spider Woman, known as Asibikaashi; she took care of the children and the people on the land. Eventually, the Ojibwe Nation spread to the corners of North America and it became difficult for Asibikaashi to reach all the children. So the mothers and grandmothers would weave magical webs for the children, using willow hoops and sinew, or cordage made from plants. The dreamcatchers would filter out all bad dreams and only allow good thoughts to enter our mind. Once the sun rises, all bad dreams just disappear.[4] American ethnographer Frances Densmore writes in her book Chippewa Customs (1929, republished 1979, pg. 113):
The Ojibwe believe that a dreamcatcher changes a person's dreams. According to Konrad J. Kaweczynski, "Only good dreams would be allowed to filter through... Bad dreams would stay in the net, disappearing with the light of day."[5] Good dreams would pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper.

Dorje Sherpa ist sieben Jahre alt, lebt in Nepal im kleinen Dorf Bengka und sein Wunsch ist es, endlich die größten Berge der Welt zu sehen. Gemeinsam mit seinem Vater und seinem Urgroßvater bricht er auf, um seine erste große Reise durch das Land der Sherpa anzutreten.
Der Weg führt durch faszinierende Landschaften zum Kloster von Thame. Dort findet gerade das Mani-Rimdu-Fest statt, eine mehrtägige buddhistische Feierlichkeit mit Maskentänzen und eindrucksvollen Ritualen. In Namche Bazar treffen Dorje und seine Begleiter den 90-jährigen Gyalzen Sherpa, den letzten noch lebenden Sherpa aus der legendären Everest-Expedition von Sir Edmund Hillary. Die Reise führt sie weiter durch die Gebirgswelt des Himalaja, vorbei an Eisriesen wie Nuptse, Lhotse oder Ama Dablam. Schließlich erreichen sie den 5.656 Meter hohen Kala Patar, und in einem letzten Ritual werden die Götter um Schutz gebeten für den kleinen Dorje auf dem Weg in die Gemeinschaft der Sherpa.
Es ist ein gängiges Missverständnis, dass das Wort Sherpa "Träger" bedeutet. Tatsächlich beschreibt es ein rund 180.000 Menschen umfassendes Volk, das vor über 500 Jahren von Tibet nach Nepal, vor allem in die Solu-Khumbu Region des Himalaja eingewandert ist. Die Bezeichnung Sherpa stammt aus dem Tibetischen: Shar bedeutet "Osten", die Nachsilbe pa heißt "Volk" bzw. "Menschen". Sherpa bedeutet also "Menschen aus dem Osten".
Tourismus wird zur wichtigsten Einnahmequelle
Aufgrund ihrer Ausdauer werden Sherpa seit jeher in großen Höhen als Expeditionshelfer eingesetzt. Tenzing Norgay (1914-1986), dem 1953 zusammen mit dem Neuseeländer Hillary die Erstbesteigung des Mount Everest gelang, wurde dadurch zum bis heute bekanntesten Sherpa. Der Tourismus ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einer immer bedeutenderen Einnahmequelle für das Volk der Sherpa geworden. Der wachsende Dienstleistungssektor verdrängt auch hier immer mehr die Landwirtschaft und macht die Menschen abhängiger von den Einnahmen aus diesem Wirtschaftszweig. Andererseits hat der Tourismus nach dem Wegbrechen des Handels mit Tibet diese wichtige Einkommensquelle ersetzt.
